Hey you lot
We have had the most relaxing week on Tioman Island, it really is a beautiful place to be. The island is tiny and only has a couple of small roads, most places are still only accessed by boats as there is no other way of getting there. We stayed a couple of nights in a village called Tekek a really cute chalet surrounded by a beautifully kept garden. Other than a snorkel trip out to Coral Island for the day we havent done much other than hang in hammocks, relax and eat the freshest fish you can imagine bbq'd to our liking, this has been perfect for us after all that travelling around. Although Im not the bravest snorkeler around I did give it a go and saw some of the most beautiful fish I have ever seen, mind you the waters here are so clear that you actually dont need to snorkel as you can see the coral and fish by just looking in the water. Must admit I was a little worried as there are reef sharks here......der nn der nn der nn dn dn dn dn dn...........
After a couple of days in
Tekek we moved on over to the East side of the island which is the most remote part. Getting here was fun, we was picked up by Bushman, the owner of the beach huts we was staying in. He had a 4 x 4 pick up truck and in the back we went, not just the back seats......the actual back of the truck!! This seems to be normal here but once we saw the mountain "road" we had to go over we knew it was going to fun!! Sweet jesus! Is all I can say!
Once we arrived we knew that bumpy journey was oh so worth it. Our beach hut really was on the beach in the most gorgeous little bay.......no kidding....paradise.....(by the dashboard light Botts 😉....)
Bushman also had a little family run cafe that served delicious malay food where we ate most of the time.
Bushman and his family made us feel so welcome and lots of laughs was had.........and we made some good friends in Amri, Adam, Joe and Coyin so the duty free alcohol fuelled night got off to a good start......(Tioman is a duty free island and soooooooo cheap but also
in right place at the right time free!) out came the fire balls and the spectacular show began......
Complete with a rum/wine/whiskey hangover Adam then did some scuba diving....lord knows how.....the hammock was the only place I was going after all that to drink. I couldnt think of a more beautful place to suffer the effects of the night before 😉 swing life away.........
Juara is home to the Juara sea turtle project which is a conservation project set up in 2008 to increase the population of sea turtles which are now endangered. Its an excellent project and they are doing some fabulous work and slowly but surely the locals are being re educated in the importance of protecting these turtles. In a nutshell the project collects eggs from sea turtle nests and take them back to the hatchery and mimic their nest environment, wait for the eggs to hatch then release back into the sea. If they didnt do this the nests would be poached as the turtle eggs have a high market value. Also few and few sea turtles are returning to Tioman to nest and even more are dying at sea because of eating plastic
as they have mistaken it for a jelly fish. Our oceans are getting more and more polluted and the bigger effect this has on the environment is devastating. Of the 4 species of sea turtles are present here only 2 of those species remain, isnt that sad........ 😞 with the work of the project, numbers of sea turtles is slowly beginning to increase, which is great news!
We have seen alot of wildlife here too such as fruit bats (flying foxes), monitor lizards, sea eagles and monkeys.
We leave here tomorrow and head back onto mainland to Melacca, which will be our last stop before coming home 😞
Im right when I say this that at home it is is tropical temperatures with no sign on Autumn or rain........please say yes........
Peace and love xx
