Langkawi Island was rainy-the kind of weather I'd hoped to escape-but it IS monsoon season. We did have one decent day to enjoy the super-soft white sand beaches. That morning we did an island hopping tour and the highlight was zooming along on the speedboat and jumping over the waves like we were on bucking broncos. You couldn't stop from laughing it was so much fun. The first stop was at an island with a freshwater lake in the middle, that according to the map, took up much of the island but did not seem at all to scale looking around. I got to put my feet in the water and receive a "massage" from the fish nibbling at my toes. Really weird feeling. Most of the tourists were Malaysian and many swam in the "amazing ... read more

May 19 - May 26 Satun -- Puala Langkawi The Langkawi island is the largest in the Langkawi archipelago, which consists of 99 islands (this number goes up to 105 during low tide) and, after being granted tax free status, the second busiest island in Malaysia. It is also the region's very popular tourist destination. Second busiest island or not, it still was very quiet (low season anyone?), which worked only to our advantage. The nearly 3km long beach, on the south east tip of the island were we settled, was pure magic. With white sand underneath your feet, palm trees behind your back, sea in front of you and mountains in the distance it felt like one of those places that fall into category of "I feel like I'm at the end of the world". ... read more

Penang through to Langkawi (leaving Malaysia) Another bus trip later and we arrived in Penang (or Georgetown), which is an island in the north-west of Malaysia (attached by SE Asia’s longest bridge). Georgetown is known for its historical buildings and English settlements, apparent in the many old churches. Unfortunately Penang is probably going to be remembered in a less than enthusiastic way….due to food poisoning, lethargy, small bouts of homesickness (Jane) and of course the heat (so forgive the b-grade photo selection). Firstly we get out of the bus and stumble around (long day) to find a taxi. Score! Well not so good, some Chinese guy trying to rip us for all we’ve got. Second attempt we decide to double up with an English couple our age that we met in the Highlands and agree to ... read more

We caught the ferry across from Penang to Langkawi and had the misfortune of sitting right under the air-con vent. Luckily I was prepared and by the end of the trip Patrick and I were both huddled under a fleece blanket and a pashmina. To be honest, Langkawi was not that exciting. We had an air-con hut with a fridge 20m from the water, compared to the Perhentians, the water was murky and not as nice to swim in. On one day, we hired a motorbike and did a tour round the island. Patrick was excited, as our trip took us round the airport, and unlike airports like Sydney etc you can go around the whole runway. He was quite happy to just sit there and watch planes take off and land all day, he dropped ... read more

We arrived at Heathrow and managed a swift check in despite having Ravneek and Jia pulling their little cases in different directions. Security at Heathrow was its usual disorganisation. I thought intially security had gone to smoothly as I did not have to take the laptop out of its bag, takes my kids shoes off or have a fight with the stroppy Security Guards. Although, my wife had a little argument with one of them as he was so rude to her, it is not like her to get into a heated confrontation. Anyway, I managed to intervene as the peacemaker in this instant, which is normally her role when I get into heated arguments! It was funny to see this role reversal. Anyway, past Security, collected the kids, belongings, etc...... and wandering off to Duty ... read more

The Langkawi Cable Car Experience turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip for 4 of us. We left our resort early only to be greeted by hoards of crowds at the Cable Car Station. I guess it was a public holiday in Malaysia today. The waiting time was about 30 minutes before we boarded our car. At times, it was quite steep as it made its ascend towards Mount Mat Cinang, about 652m above sea level. Once the cable car reaches the summit, we were greeted by a mist of clouds and a magnificent view of the "Blue Mountains". It was a cool way to escape from the scorching tropical heat. As I lay on the beach overlooking the coconut trees in the afternoon, there was a sense of inner peace within ... read more
