We have moved onto another Island and to be honest the lifestyle lives on just the same, getting up late, going to the end of our block to get onto the beach, which takes a whole 30 seconds, we then just hang out, go Parasailing, and rent jet-skis and mince around for most of the day. The fact that we are now in Malaysia has not really changed thing for us, though the cost of beer is higher and more of the women are covered up... The trip over was fine, the usual bus, jeep, boat and then as i got off the boat the stubed my other big toe, so i now have one thats backened from Sri Lanka and the other one blackened from Malaysia...well i guess they both match. I also also ... read more

The ferry to Langkawi was an experience I would rather not relive, thankfully James and I are not prone to sea sickness, however it would seem everyone else on the ferry was! We have spent the last week in the Beach Garden Resort on Pantai Cenang. The weather has been varied, but the tropical storms have allowed us time to organise our arrival in Melbourne. With the first apartment we planned to rent falling through, we seem to have lined up another (thanks to an excellent reference from Steve), in what seems to be a desirable area (fingers crossed). Most of our time has been spent reading on the beach and around the pool, but we did find the time to hire a car for all of £8 and tour the island for the day. Took ... read more

Greetings! You are reaching us here today on the Malaysian island of Langkawi, near the Thai border. Like Tioman, it's a duty free island, but as we actually don't drink much nowadays, and neither of us smoke, at least we can get er.... cheap perfume?! It's a lot more built up than we imagined but has a nice, relaxed feel to it, and a nice beach where we are staying. It's nice coming back to Malayisa, its comforting to be familiar with the food, (Thai food was uber tasty though!), bits of the language, stuff like that. We're hoping to hire a moped (cheaper than two normal bikes!) tomorrow and have an explore round the island. Today so far we have just had a beach day (something we haven't really done since Bali!) and had some ... read more

Pantai Cenang is meant to be the main and best beach on Langkawi so that is where I headed once my ferry from Penang arrived. It was a pretty decent beach I must say and absolutely no one on it. The sea was the hottest I had encountered which is saying something after a week in the soup in Goa. The Gecko Guest house provided me with a roof and a bathroom which was all that was asked of it. A prolonged and bloody mosquito massacre had to take place before I was content to go to sleep but the bloodshed was worth it - I slept in peace. There is a strip of restaurants and shops in Pantai Cenang. Great seafood is available and, because the island is duty free, the beer is cheap. ... read more

A refreshing break from the hustle bustle of the city into the lap of the tropical paradise, still falling short for words to describe Langkawi. The outstanding natural landscapes of Pulau Langkawi truly proclaims it a true tropical paradise. Besides its whites sandy beaches and limestone hills, its lush vegetation filled with exotic flora and fauna would attract natural lovers. I stayed in Sheraton Langkawi, which is a short drive from the Langkawi International Airport, and is spread over lush tropical greenery along with private beach coves. This makes Sheraton the perfect place to seek tranquility and relaxation. I had a chauffeur driven Mercedes and an incredible tour guide who made this journey even more beautiful. I hope he didn't land up in trouble for driving me around longer than what I paid for. A visit ... read more

When you split up the name “Langkawi” you will see that “lang” is a short form for “helang”, which means in Malay language eagle and “kawi” means red lime stone. The Langkawi Archipelago counts about 104 islands but only four of them are inhabited. Due to the fact that the islands consist mainly of pure steep rock without any soil it is close to impossible for human beings to settle there. So they will be preserved for the eagles, the monkeys, the lizards, the birds etc., and for the beauty of the world. Langkawi is part of the province of Kedah and since about 20 years it has the privilege of being duty free, granted by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia Dr. Mahatir. Geographically it is located at the end of the Straits of Malacca, ... read more

Samir's article. Don't get me started with all that legal visa stuff, but let's just say we somehow wound up in Malaysia. We first took a roach-infested ferry to an island called Penang, and watched Spider-man 3 on the boat ride (what do you mean it just came out in theaters!?) We stayed at a hotel near Chinatown, so if you walked past shops you could see roasted ducks with their heads still on. After spending 3 or 4 days eating and sleeping, we finally decided not to treat Malaysia like a pit stop before India (which we will also treat like a pit stop before Turkey) and went to see a movie and go bowling. After we went bowling, I accidently fell up to my knees in mud chasing some monitor lizards. After Penang, ... read more

Our journey from Krabi to Langkawi was another nightmare one. We were collected from our guesthouse at 6am, crammed into a minibus and driven around the Krabi area picking random people up. The minibus, which was meant to hold 10 people, ended up holding 12 people plus their luggage. It was pretty uncomfortable, as these minibuses aren't made for foreigners and their long legs, but we put the MP3 on and tried to sleep with our heads lolling around everywhere - no head-rests! In his wisdom, the minibus driver had decided not to fix the suspension, he obviously thought it would be more fun for the passengers to bump around and bang their heads on the ceiling every time he drove over a pebble! Part way through the journey we stopped in the middle of a ... read more
