We boarded another bus yet again on January 27. This time we were headed to Penang (by bus and ferry) and then onto Langkawi, a touristy island in Malaysia. Our day's bus journey confirmed that travelling is always an adventure in Asia. Once again, the bus driver smoked while driving. Mid-way through our bus trip, we stopped at a bus station to change buses. The station was hot, noisy, and crowded. We bought our tickets and were instructed to board the bus immediately because it was leaving in 5 minutes. We frantically scrambled outside to try to find our bus from a choice of 20. All of their engines were running. Amongst clouds of exhaust, we searched in vain to find our bus. The pressure was even more intense because we all had to use the ... read more

Hello from Marvellous Malaysia folks! This blog is brought to you from the beautiful Malaysian island of Langkawi and the capital, Kuala Lumpur. I shall pick up where I left off on my last blog which is back in Thailand on the island of Koh Pha Ngan where I was holidaying with Anth. After saying goodbye to him it was time for me to do my first spot of solo travelling and leave Thailand behind and make my way to the Malaysian island of Langkawi to meet up with Tina, Emily and Consi (Lucy was in a different part of Malaysia spending two weeks with her boyfriend). I wasn't too worried about travelling on my own as travelling in Asia is generally very easy as you simply walk into a travel agents and tell them ... read more

Our last stop was the island of Langkawi for a little sun and beach before heading back to Korea. We couldn't have picked a more beautiful spot. It was prettier than Phuket, and way more secluded. We had a nice time getting Pina Coladas in the the pool, swimming in the ocean, and relaxing. We went on a scuba trip to Pulau Payar Marine Park, and got to see some neat fish, seahorses, featherstarfish and moray eels. At lunch we went back to the island (Pulau Payar) and had lunch. We fed the fish in the cove and they would come righ up to you and swim through your legs, it was really neat. As we were leaving, we saw reef sharks from the docks. It was the perfect, relaxing end to a great vacation.... read more

Langkawi is marketed as the main tourist-attraction of Malaysia. This is the place where anyone can travel to. We took an early early (8.00) ferry from Penang to Langkawi. Arriving 2 hours later still very sleepy we only had a vague idea of where we wanted to go. We found our way to an information booth where a guy was ringing around to all the places to try to find us a room. The main problem was, there were no rooms! We arrived in between christmas and new years and it was full everywhere. We decided to just go for dormbeds for the night and see what we could find the next day. We were lucky as the owner of our guesthouse Gecko said that there was a room being availible at 9 in the evening. ... read more

We arrived in Langkawi on the 19th December and dumped our bags in a bar. . . we were both immediatley inviited to sit down for an ice cold beer with a group of english people who have been living on the island for about 10 years. Chris downed one and went off to find a guesthouse, getting darker, and harder to find a place to stay. He found a great homestay place, owned by a Japanese lady and an Iranian guy, it really was like staying in a home, really friendly people, more free beer was drunk on our first night as they welcomed us to their humble abode. 1st day in Langkawi we decided to have a stroll around and ended up going to the "Underwater world" aquariam just down the road. It was ... read more

HI and Happy Holidays from the Malaysia/Thailand border!! First off, so you all know, the Philippines Relief Project with Hands On Disaster Response has been put on hold for awhile, until details with the Philippines officials and housing issues can be settled. This said, I don't know when I will get there, but plan on being available as soon as I hear something a bit more concrete. Thank you to all of you who have commented on my last email blast. I also have to admit I made a terrible error in my last email. Besides being a big dork, I was in a hurry and incorrectly gave the website for the relief organization. The correct website address is www.hodr.org not .com. Thank you to all that noticed -- and commented. :-( I'm sorry if I ... read more

Thanks to a brilliant wedding gift from Jasmin, we found ourselves being gently felt-up by the velvety hand of luxury. We arrived in Langkawi at midday and headed straight for the Andaman Hotel Resort for 2 nights of accommodation diametrically opposed to our usual standards. Whether soaking up the sun on the perfect white-sand beach (see pic), lounging by the tropically-themed pool or sipping cocktails whilst taking in the sunset (see pic), we couldn’t help bit ask; ‘Where did it all go wrong?’ The hotel is a relatively new addition to a rainforest dating back millions of years and as a result, the wild life was spectacular. Birds of Paradise flocked around the pool, wild boar meandered around at night and windows had to be closed to keep the monkeys away from the fruit bowl. Wildlife ... read more

I hadn't been to a proper beach in over a month since i left Ko Phangan. I didn't know if i would ever find another nice beach again after being spoiled by Koh Phi Phi. Well I get to Langkawi and finally meet an equal to the previous paradise. I stayed at the Shirin Guesthouse. It was owned and operated by a Japanese woman ( Hiroko) and her Iranian husband ( Abraham). Hiroko was the sweetest, most gentle woman i have met in all my travels. She was like a mother. Going above and beyond to make sure everything we needed was taken care of. She cooked us Kibabs one night just cuz she wanted to. Everytime we walked in the door she would give us a drink. Giving advice and even playing match maker with ... read more

Time for yet another update on our adventures I think we had better find a better opener talk about stating the obvious!!!!! Well we left Taman Negara with the Australian in tow we got back on the worlds slowest bus and got back to KL we then made the very clever decision to travel to Langkawi by overnight train as if we traveled by bus we would of missed our last ferry to the island. So we thought by catching the overnight train we would not have to pay for a hostel we could get to the island nice and early and we could be fresh and ready to go. Or so we thought. We after being told we could be there from any time form 8am we were quite excited to get on the train. ... read more

We left Railay at 6am, the place was like a ghost town. A Thai lady came to meet us and guided us to our long tail boat taxi. It was just about sunrise when we boarded the boat and this was the first one we had seen since arriving in Thailand. It took us about an hour to reach Krabi port, where we waited for our mini bus to pick us up. The bus arrived on time at exactly 7am. We had another 5 hours ahead of us before we arrived at Satun to board a ferry to Langkawi, Malaysia. It was quite sad leaving Thailand as we had had such an amazing time there, but at least we were leaving there on a high. The ferry to Langkawi only took an hour. It was quite ... read more
