Our first destination in Malaysia was the tourist hotspot of Langkawi. After a one night stop in Satun, Thailand, we boarded a ferry and set off on a four hour journey to the 6th country of our travels so far. We planned on spending five nights on the island and chose to head for Cenang Beach to look for somewhere to stay as this was where the majority of guesthouses and cheap eats were based. We managed to find ourselves a really nice little called The Palms Guesthouse that is run by an English couple who have been out in Malaysia running Guesthouses for the past ten years. Once again the weather was perfect for the entire time that we were there. The temperature never fell below 35C during the day so it was perfect weather ... read more

Last night saw us leave Thailand via a very scary bus ride to Satun - to say the bus drivers in Thailand are fast is a blatant understatement! Kim swears we left the road at one point and I'd be a fool to disagree with her... We entered Satun at 0220am and it was deserted, apart from a couple of stray dogs and teenage delinquents - we quickly found a place to stay until sunrise. I think it's fair to say that the mood was that of unease - after all, this area is a 'no-go' area as identified by the Foreign Office, so I was a little bit uneasy for the first time - I'm glad I never told my mum it was a terrorist area - we won't be back there, I promise! Malaysia PART 1: "Malaysia Truly Asia!!" (Kuala Lumpur) Malaysia PART 2: Malaysia Truly Jungle! (Taman Negara) Malaysia PART 3: Malaysia: Georgetown Adventures (Georgetown) Malaysia PART 4: Malaysia's Island Paradise (Langkawi) The last stop of our Malaysian adventure was the beautiful northern island of Langkawi. Arriving by ferry around noon on the 30th, we were more than ready to hit the beaches of Pantai Cenang. Pantai Cenang is not known for having the best beaches on Langkawi, but it is the more populated beach on the island, and that was exactly what we were looking for for New Year's Eve. After checking into our hotel, "Nadia's Inn Comfort" (later nicknamed "Nadia's Discomfort"), we decided to head straight to the beach, and that is basically where we remained for the next three days. Actually, with the exception ... read more

Die Mangrove Baeume si... read more

Langkawi est peut etre une des plus belles sur lesquelles on est alles jusque la. Certes la Thailande est tres bien et magnifique, mais la Malaysie est excellente. Les gens sont gentils et cette ile, Langkawi, est vriament superbe... We liked Thailand very much but I have to say that Malaysia is very, very nice. The people are so nice and this island, Langkai, which we went to for a few days is just stunning... We know where we'll go on holidays (when we come back from our travels of course!).... read more

After a rough flight into Langkawi and a very, very wet start (two days) the sun came out, and so we decided to stay in Pantai Cenang (Cha-nang Beach) on Langkawi Island for two weeks. Langkawi is a group of 99 islands north of Penang just off the Malaysian north-west coast, close to the Thai southern border. Langkawi is a Duty and Tax Free island which means that beer is 1.3 MYR per can (AUD$0.47), and a 1 litre bottle of Baileys is 42MYR (AUD$15.27). And Col, Johnny Walker Gold (18 year aged whiskey) is 75MYR (AUD$27.27) for a 1.2litre bottle - shame we can't put some in a parcel home for you. Langkawi is also a Muslim community which means that some restaurants serve alcohol and the majority do not! We are staying at the ... read more

Today is the 100th day of my trip, almost half way through the first leg, so just a brief blog entry. We're spending the weekend in on Langkawi Island (north west Malaysia near Thailand), at a gorgeous tropical beach. Now I haven't had a lot of success with beaches so far - it rained when I finally got to Nha Trang in Vietnam and last week we went to Penang to find the beach and water were pretty awful and dirty (so just stayed by the pool in the Holiday Inn). Arrived last night to torrential rain, but luckily this morning got a few hours of broken sunshine (enough to get quite burnt in several places), beach and water were superb. In the afternoon we went on a boat ride to surrounding islands to watch eagles ... read more

Time flies when you are having fun. Just one suni-filled day left here before we depart for Cambodia. We have had just enough time here... though never enough in the minds of the little ones. Stunning place to break up a lengthy journey, and just what we needed. Can not say that we have strayed far from the resort, but really there has been little need to. There are some basic excursions that one can take... but they would only attempt to duplicate what we saw in Borneo. And, to be fair to the kids we selected not to drag them around too much for our time here. These days by the beach and pool are as much for them as they are for us. Today it tried to rain... the first time this trip!!! Not ... read more

OK... well it seems that due to some computer issue this site was shut down for three or four days... and my past blogs are all lost. Shame. No way to bring them back it seems... so I will be starting fresh today. We are on the fab island of Langkawi, up along the northwest coast of Malaysia. Simply stunnng..... or what one could call paradise. This is in part due to the natural beauty of the area / the warm water / the white sand / cheap seafood / etc. But, it is also paradise as it falls on the tail of our 3 days in Borneo. They were a different sort of paradise, but on a more basic level. Borneo was all that I had hoped or thought it would be. Jungle / heat ... read more
