We didnt do a blog for Koh Lanta because to be honest in the 2 days we were there we did very little other than sit by the beach, read and do a bit of research on the internet on Malaysia but all the same it was a nice island and a shame we didn't have more time to get out and see it. When we got to Langkawi (Smallish Island off North West Peninsular Malaysia) we decided we would have to get out an see more of this island so we hired a car for 40 RM (6.50GBP) and as you can see you pay for what you get because it was the smallest car in the world. OK maybe a slight exageration there. We had a brilliant day just going out and about ... read more

Langkawi - Island of Paradise... After spending too many days in KL's Chinatown (Blog: ), we plotted our escape to a resort on the island of Langkawi. Maybe it was the lack of window in our 'home' of the last 7 nights, but we needed some sun. We had looked at all the islands in Malaysia before deciding to come here. Many of the lesser known islands involved lengthy boat trips that Jason was not ready to face after our experience in Oz (Blog: ) Particularly after reading someone else's stomach churning blog on their fishermans's boat journey to Pualo Perhentian - Jason, so this meant that we were limited to islands that we could fly to. Our budget meant that Langkawi and Penang were the cheapest islands to fly to with AirAsia. After much consideration ... read more

It's paradise found.....in Langkawi!!!!! Asia » Malaysia » Langkawi By Erik LApril 9th 2007YC Law What a beautiful island! Nice mountain ranges, clear blue water, white sandy beaches......... The main island or the Kuah town is good for shopping. You can buy all the duty free goods! But the catch is there's limit!!! But on the island you can drink as much as you like. The beer is cheaper than the soft drinks! Food is a bit expensive though, it's a tourist place, right? The cable car trip was great!!!! We got to the top of a mountain by the cable car, and can see almost the whole island!!!! Great view there - wide open sea from afar, lush green mountain ranges in the... read more

This blog by Lucas: Thank you to Sirs Ernst & Young, Mother Medtronic and Mr. Intermune for helping us, over 15 years of hard work combined, to compile a warchest of hotel 'frequent stay' points. It allowed us to stay, free of charge, for 3 ultra-luxurious nights at the Westin Langkawi, which boasts a pool amongst the biggest and best we have ever seen. We shared our resort with many other 'short-timer' honeymooners in this tropical oasis, including a young couple from Sydney and another from Syria. We stayed poolside all day long, ventured into the town one night for Malaysia's famed street food, and soaked up some sun. Langkawi was our introduction to Malaysia, and the people were incredibly friendly and gregarious - I seem to say that about every country, but Malaysia reigns supreme ... read more

After nearly 28 hours of travelling, 2 planes and 2 overnight trains, we FINALLY arrived in Langkawi, a small island of the North West coast of Malaysia. This tax free island promised to offer cheap booze, amazing beaches, intense sun and great diving. We hadn’t booked any accommodation as we thought we would be relaxed and spontaneous and choose somewhere when we arrived. This was a bit of a mistake as we realised that anything situated on the beach that was half decent was pricey and the accommodation available was pretty grim. We asked a very cool bloke with dreadlocks listening to Zero 7 on the beach if there were any decent, reasonably priced places to stay and he pointed us towards Gecko, a clean, basic and cheap place which offered good breakfast, cheap beer and ... read more

Beauty Beyond Just Beaches We were definitely a little disappointed that we hadn’t given ourselves more time in Kuala Lumpur because it was such a cool, laid back place but it was time to depart for our last Asian beach experience on this leg of the trip. It’s hard to be really upset about leaving a city when you know you are heading to a paradise of beaches and jungle. The flight to Langkawi was a short one, as all of our flights throughout Asia have been. We really have learned to love the cheap air fare for Asian flights. Air Asia has all sorts of deals for direct flights throughout the peninsula for which we have yet to spend more than $100 US combined to get to our destinations. You can’t fly anywhere in ... read more

I am going to digress a bit and quickly inform you of how vain Korean teenagers and those in their early 20's are. For example, rather then having a picture of a loved one or a famous person on their phone, they have a picture of themselves. You see them walking down the road, one hand held out holding on to their mobiles whilst adjusting their hair and pouting their lips for the camera! If they are not taking pictures of themselves then they are getting other people to snap them in their traditional 2 finger peace sign pose. A few weeks ago I was sitting in a bar when the waitress came over and instead of taking my order; she picked up my camera and began clicking away with the camera aimed at her! Anyway, ... read more

We got the 4pm Ferry on Wednesday from Satun to Langkawi & with the hour on we arrived at about 6.30pm; after a bit of a ropey meal at the ferry port, Dan was ill & so when we arrived at our bungalows, (which we had booked when we got off the boat), he went to bed. Justin, Rich, Claire & I went for some food in an Irish bar & then went to a bar on the beach for a drink with some crazy Rastas who ran the watersports shop on the beach. Claire, Justin & I headed home & decided to play cards outside our bungalow, Rich returned about half an hour after us when our neighbour, Greg from Scotland, offered to go & get us some beers, I don't think I have ever ... read more
