First, being English and all i'd like to complain about the weather! ITS BLOODY FREEZING!!!!!!! I thought La Paz was cold, but this is just stupid. I really had forgotten how bad England was during the wintertime. My hands (surely literally) froze three times today! THREE TIMES!!! Well, if you didn't know already, i'm back home in the UK for a short holiday and a fix if Branston Pickle (chunky as the new squirty smooth ones defeat the whole point of true Branston). After a 'delightful' 32 hour journey to Lima from La Paz i had another seven or so hours to wait for my flight home - via Canada - then seven more in Toronto for my connecting flight - sooooo after two and a half days and much boredom after leaving Bolivia i get ... read more

Actually, that should really say we're not in the NZ summer anymore, Toto. Its absolutely freezing here!! I don't know if I've ever been somewhere so cold before. Its usually between 1-2 degrees in the morning, gets up to around 4 during the day and drops to god knows what in the night. I'm slowly getting used to it, but I think its going to take a while. I still wear about 20 layers of clothing every day and by the time I get home my hands are stiff (despite wearing nice leather gloves) and my nose is numb. But enough whinging, I've been doing some pretty cool things in the last few days. On Thursday Clare was off to Sheffield for a meeting and wouldn't be home till 8. So I was left with the ... read more

Well, at the suggestion of many, including my kids, I've decided to do the right thing and put my ramblings in a travel blog. Hope you find this more useful than my filling your emailer with all those messages and photos. Feel free to respond within this blog without giving away any personally identifying information and others can benefit from your comments. Well here goes. Day 16, 1-1-2007, Monday, LAST DAY Well, as anticipated, we lugged our luggage down the street and got on the bus to Victoria Station. The bus driver, though, refused to to anywhere until I gave him more than a pound for each of us. It seems the fare went up to a pound and a half. Luckily, I had the coins. I guess I didn't look trustworthy when I told him ... read more

Mary, Jeff, Wayne and I all went on a very long walk with Lucy and Sophie (my dogs!). We met bright and early (9am) in Chelmsford on a cold, foggy winters day. The dogs were shocked at the early wake up call (7.30am) and the huge breakfast they had! We set out wearing our walking boots, fleeces and backpacks. Our destination was Heybridge Basin (approx 14miles away). The way was muddy, the weather cold. We walked faster than expected and so made our lunch stop of Papermill Lock by 11am. We had sandwiches for lunch and the dogs ate some crunch before we continued on our way passing locks, boats, geese, ducks and kingfishers. We made record time arriving at Heybridge Basin by 2.30pm ish and stopped at the Old Ship pub (outside as we were ... read more

A Festivus for the Rest of us! Bagels; NO, Festivus; YES! For those of you not familiar with the non-denominational Festivus holiday made famous through Seinfeld I suggest you do some reading up at; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivus Since Richard arrived in London on December 23rd it seemed fitting that we would celebrate his arrival in true Festivus spirit. After meeting him at the airport we whisked him off to a reunion Festivus feast at Wagamama's care of Craigs generousity. After dinner we sat down to air our grievances with each other, and this went surprisingly well then the real fun started, the Feats of Strength. Feat 1: Malteser Machine Gunning Who could eat 10 Maltesers one at a time the fastest. Surprise winner; Josh after Craig was DSQ'd for dropping a 'teser Feat 2: Weight Holding Who could ... read more

Enjoyed an early Christmas with the locals here in Locks Heath. The only down side was that I had to do all the cooking. And the fact that we had to wait for Student to get back from work (he left on Friday and came back today at 7pm). Once he got here, he wasn't hungry. Oh well, at least everyone else was so hungry that they actually liked the chow I put on the table. Other than that, a normal Christmas in the asylum. Lots of beers, fizzy wine, white wine, red wine, cider, food, cheese, biscuits, presents, a trampoline, all sorts really. Currently just waiting for Match of the Day to come on whilst sipping a fine port. Had my first McDonalds of the trip yesterday in Fareham. Not too shabby, but as it ... read more

We had a comfortable flight, in spite of the dire predictions broadcast back home prior to our takeoff. Airports were reported to be shutting down in England and Germany due to heavy fog. The view from the plane as we circled to land at Gatwick was clear enough to see the plots of land bordered by hedgerows. What was all the fuss about we wondered? We made our way quickly through the crowds at the train station in the airport and picked up our prepaid tickets to Scotland by rail. Most people managed to move only a few feet forward in the time it took Edward and I to snake through an unbelievable crowd of people standing elbow-to-elbow and cheek-to-cheek. It reminded me of the time we managed to by-pass a crowd of people a ... read more

Today, I have done more stuff Booked hostel in some other places, cancelled phone contract, moved clothes around my room so it looks like i've packed, and managed to fluke my contact lenses being here on time. Apparently they never come this fast normally. Super. Around lunchtime lost all my travellers cheques and dad found them under some darts in the garage a few hours later. This prompted to me to start an 'important documents folder'. I've put my insurance details in there as well. I've been advised by various third parties that they are more useful there than in a pile of laundry on top of my drawers.... read more

A pretty busy week at work, ended early on Friday afternoon thanks to Dave (my boss) wanting to have a few beers at 1pm. We went and found a pub down the road and had a meal and a few quiets, well they were quiet until Dave decided to get into the swing of things by buying more and more beers and shots of sambuca. 5 pints and 2 shots later I had to get the train back to my flat, pack my bags and get on the train for the Lakes District. I thought I had done well, until I arrived in Barrow five hours later and unpacked to find that I had 2 pairs of undies, 2 t-shirts and about 12 pairs of socks to last me 5 days. Saturday I went for a ... read more

Welcome to Heathrow... Friday, December 22-23, 5:15pm We arrive from Iceland. The original plan had been to spend the night in London and come back to the airport in the morning for our continuing journey. That was when we were arriving at noon, had our luggage, and outdoor visibility was greater than 2 feet. From London's Daily Mail newspaper for that day: It is difficult to explain to anyone visiting these shores how a dose of winter frost and fog can so easily envelop one of the world's leading airports in chaos and calamity, compelling its national airline to wipe off hundreds of flights at a stroke and stranding passengers for hours, maybe days. For the second day running, these were the horrendous scenes at Heathrow as nearly 200,000 people struggled to get away for Christmas. ... read more
