A Kiwi that loves to travel. I, like every other traveler, would love to be a travel writer, so if you're reading this and want to pay me mega bucks then I suppose I could be persuaded. If you'd like to check out some of my other work then have a look at the satirical website that me and a few friends have created: http://www.getfact.co.nz

On our final morning in Panama our guide Rafael picked us up and mentioned that I reminded him of someone. He was racking his brain until he said "Oh, I remember, it's the guy off Saved By The Bell." I thought he was going to say that I looked like that creepy guy Screech, but fortunately he meant Zack. Although this made Nicola crack up laughing so I take it she meant I am way better looking than him. Our flight to Lima was with Copa airlines, I can't remember it being bad, so that's a positive. I do remember being on the toilet when it got bumpy and the seat belts sign went on. I remember my mate saying it would be pretty funny if a mask fell from the ceiling whilst on the toilet, ... read more

After consuming pancakes for breakfast we met up with Rafael again to do a tour of the city. An English girl by the name of Lisa joined us, she had just finished a trip through South America and had been in Africa before that. She works a few months each year and then travels for the rest on a tight budget, not a bad life really. We started our tour at Panama Viejo the site of the ruins of the old city which was raided by pirates in the 1600's. The old tower still stands so we ascended it and had great views of the city. After the attacks, the city was moved inland and to a higher vantage point to avoid being sitting ducks on the shoreline. Our next port of call was to a ... read more

From Los Angeles we ventured south, taking Copa Airlines down to Panama. Unfortunately I was sat next to a fat bloke who dominated the arm rest early, snored and smelt like rotting cheese so it was a long flight. The flight attendants spoke mainly Spanish with a little English, we realised quickly that for the next few months there'd be a lot of pointing and charades in order to communicate. Thankfully I knew "Uno Cerveza Por favor." At the airport, we were picked up by a local Panamanian named Rafael who spoke perfect English. Fortunately for us, he had attended a local school where almost all of the attendees were Americans. He reckons the principal must have really liked his Mum to let him in there. Rafael was a brilliant guide, who shuttled people to and ... read more

Next up on our travels was “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciuncula”, or if you use its abbreviation - L.A. Imagine having to use the full name every time you talked about the city. It sure would ruin any rap songs. I’ve heard from my source Ron Burgundy that its English translation is “par-boiled turkey giblets”. Due to our relatively brief stay in the city we booked into a central hostel from which we could walk to many of the central sights. We started with the customary Hollywood Walk of Fame. I was amazed at how many of the people I’d never heard of. I also thought that ridiculous Hollywood names were a recent thing - Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg etc, but apparently not, there’s a Hollywood star for some ... read more

The Grand Canyon is a fair old distance from Vegas so we had to get up at the disgusting time of 5:30am so we could catch our tour bus. Now I'm a pretty level-headed, unprejudiced person that sees the good in most people but our tour guide was the biggest dipsh*t idiot ever. He absolutely loved himself and told us far too much about his personal life and how awesome he thought he was rather than about the Grand Canyon itself. His name is Mark Antony and he should be avoided like the plague. On the plus side we got a good breakfast and packed lunch. I think it may have been down to the fact that it was in a brown paper bag. I think it just tastes better out of one. Same goes for ... read more

Ok, so i was just kidding, we didn't take any illegal drugs - it was another Hangover reference - well spotted. What we did over the few nights we were in Vegas were the following: On the first night we were amazed to find mexican people all littered along the streets in colourful tops handing out leaflets. On inspection they were for strip clubs and you couldn't go 2 metres along the sidewalk without them trying to force them upon you. They did an annoying click with them that made you look, and once you made eye contact they were on you. By the looks of it, many people grab them and then just throw them on the footpath because they are literally everywhere. If you've seen Ocean's Eleven you'll remember the Bellagio fountains at the ... read more

Our Canadian visas were about to run out, and instead of being hunted down by Tommy Lee Jones like fugitives we left Calgary, our destination NZ. But first we had a few stopovers on the way, namely: Las Vegas, LA, Panama, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, London, Ibiza, Aberdeen, Cumbria, Frankfurt and Thailand. So we said our goodbyes to Scott and Tina who incidentally went to New York on the day we left for Las Vegas. In New York, Scott proposed to Tina who said yes and they have since had their wedding in Antigua. Man my blog is way behind! A huge thanks to you both for putting us up in Canada, we had a blast and look forward to returning the favour when you come to NZ. It was difficult to decide on what we ... read more

As the saying goes: Time flies when you're having fun or when you strap a watch to a pigeon or throw a grandfather clock off a high rise or ... What I'm trying to say I guess is that our time in Canada was about up. I finished my work at SAIT polytechnic, and was treated to a farewell lunch, I really enjoyed my time working there, the people were just so nice. Nicola also enjoyed her time at Mark Staffing where she was a jack of all trades, undertaking recruitment, sales and accounting. Good for the old CV. On our final Friday of work we met up with some of the friends we'd made over the past year and had some beers at our local haunt The Unicorn. We played darts, ate good old pub ... read more

With our time winding down in Canada we made sure to fit in some of our favourite things before leaving. The first of which was a return to Drumheller. Rick made the trip to Calgary from Banff and before we left for Drumheller he did something completely retarded. Whilst playing darts he decided to throw one from about a metre away, it clanked into the board side on, bounced back and flew right into Rick's thumb. As he stood there bleeding, I wondered if I should help or just laugh. I really think they should give the guy a TV show. That night we called NZ to talk to some of our mates, a few of our other mates were in Japan for my friend Kenji's wedding. Check out the video I made for him here: ... read more

As part of my Christmas present, Nicola had bought me tickets to see the Killers in concert at the Calgary Saddledome. Nic, Tina and Rick also had tickets so we made quite an outing of it. By this I mean we got pretty plastered during the day, well Rick and I certainly did. I'd like to say I usually have some coordination, but as we passed a baseball game, I decided I'd show off to the kids and smash a few home runs. They pitched me loads of balls, about 10 minutes later with still no hits and Rick in fits of laughter at my ineptitude, I walked off with my tail between my legs. Don't drink and skite, it always ends in tears. I believe we played some drinking games on the bus on the ... read more
