Today, we had found out was thanksgiving in America, Canada celebrates on a different day earlier in the year. We realised that none of us really knew what thanksgiving was. I have just googled it and apparently Thanksgiving Day is ... a harvest festival. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. As we checked out of the hotel we walked passed the kitchen. A large sign read "Hunters if you leave your game in the fridge please put your name on it." For some reason in my head I imagine an old lady going to put something in the fridge and craping herself because as she opens it it is overflowing with a huge stag carcus. We drove off south passing through a place called Wolf Creek. ... read more

We were surprised to open the curtains in the morning and see thick snowfall which had obviously been happening for a while. The deers looked freezing as the snow coated their backs. I guess they are used to it. I don't think I could ever acclimiatise, I 'm a hot weather fanatic. Thankfully soon after setting off the snow eased off and eventually stopped. We got over-excited when we thought we saw a wolf, it turned out to be a huskey dog and had a collar. Oops. An hour or so drive saw us arrive at the US border. We parked up and entered the immigration office with our passports. We got given a few forms and were filling them out when Nic went to use the toilets. The power tripper behind the desk yelled at ... read more

Before heading off on a roadtrip, Andre had to go into town and sate his unquenchable thirst for shopping. Every time he plays golf he thinks he should buy a new set of clubs rather than hiring. He'd have a garage full if he was allowed. I think he may have been born with one too many x chromosomes. Once Andre had bought a $500 jacket and we had gone for a tour of Calgary downtown it was time to get ready and head south. Andre and I headed to the airport and hired a Ford Escape 4wd. It was bright and shiny red like a fire engine. It had actually only done 19kms so was essentially brand new. Andre was excited, it was like a new toy. We picked up the girls and did a ... read more

Former London flatties Lisa and Andre decided that on their way home to NZ from the UK they would stop in Canada and spend a few weeks with us. They arrived bearing good news that they were engaged. The big rig popping the question in Holland in a town bearing his last name: Van Sintmaartensdyk. I think I spelt that right. Lisa you better start practising now. Before I tell you about their trip, I need to start with the night before their arrival. Rick, a mate from University, who like Nic and I had a year visa in Canada and was living nearby in Banff had come into Calgary for the weekend. It was a good weekend for sport, we watched the All Blacks win and then the Kiwis beat the Aussies in the Rugby ... read more

North Americans go nuts for Halloween, weeks beforehand people deck out their yards with all sorts of weird and wacky paraphernalia. I particularly liked one house's decoration which had skeletons in coffins, graves with bones coming out, and ghosts dangling from the windows. They must have spent hundreds of dollars. We were not as excessive, but did buy some pumpkins. I'd never hollowed out a pumpkin before, it was quite novel really. You start by cutting a hole big enough to fit your hand, making sure you keep the piece cut out. Then you scrape and scoop all the goopy insides out. Once that's done you can get on to drawing the face and then carving it. Mine was terrifying, I almost cried just looking at it, Nicola and Tina's were a bit more "cute" and ... read more

After months of no work, I finally got round to looking for something. To start with I checked papers and websites. The papers were rubbish and the websites had a few good leads. Calgary is an oil and gas city so wages are higher than the rest of the country. It means that people are flocking to the city in search of jobs. Besides this, when we first arrived there were ads for jobs in lots of shop windows. For this reason I was filled with optimism that I would find something. I was excited when I read a job posting for a web content specialist at West Jet, one of the local airlines. I applied, got an interview and then got asked back for a second competency interview. I had never had a competency interview ... read more

Hands up if you know who Chris Cornell is? For all of you with your hands down he's the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave two of the biggest rock bands in the 90s and 00s. He also has a solo career with his biggest hit "You Know My Name" being a James Bond opening theme. I'm not just telling you this for shits and giggles, we went and saw him playing at Calgary University. Nic, Tina, Chad and I rocked up early had a feed and a few drinks before watching support act "Mobile". They are a Canadian band with a few songs that have made it big on the charts. I reckon they sound a little like U2 so expect big things. Chris Cornell was brilliant. He performed with a backing band ... read more

Calgary has some weird and wacky weather. The four seasons are very distinct, you can definitely tell when winter is anyway. When we first arrived it was summer. Days were generally warm to hot with temperatures around 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. The air is extremely dry and people use humidifiers to put water into the air, a strange concept for a New Zealander. This means that you get lots of electric shocks, I'm glad my shock-happy mate Callum didn't live here. Rain is rare and if it occurs it is usually accompanied by thunder and fork lightning. We watched some spectacular storms from our balcony. When Mum and Dad were in town a lightning bolt hit near the house with a huge bang; pretty scary stuff. During one storm I was playing with the settings ... read more

On the way back to Calgary from Fairmont Springs we passed the majestic Castle Mountain and were lucky enough to spot an eagles nest atop a bridge nearby. Usually eagles will have one offspring, sometimes two. This nest had three and the mother in it at once. We watched the squawking children being feed by the mother who was swooping down into the river below to catch fish. It was hard to see the three babies at once, but just before we left I managed to snap a photo with all three. We also made a stop at Kootenay national park. It is a beautiful area with picturesque waterfalls and an array of wildlife. We eyed lots of caterpillars and butterflies. Nic wasn't impressed. She isn't a fan of moths or butterflies, so I have to ... read more

August long weekend holidays rolled around and we still had no jobs so we packed our sleeping bags and tents in the car and headed with Tina, Scott, Chad and Kelly to Fairmont Springs which is west of Calgary in British Columbia. In the end we were lucky to find a campsite as a lot of people had decided to spend the long weekend camping. I was stoked with the spot we got though. It was surrounded by a horseshoe shaped pond. We pitched tents before lazing around the fire. Eating, drinking and being merry occurred. Not even a downpour and mosquitos dampened the spirits. The campsite was close to a river so the next morning we blew up the inflatable rafts, grabbed a few brews and sat back as we floated through the valley. Nic ... read more
