We did as the locals do and had a nice long sleep in. The sun had come out so we decided we’d spend the day at the beach. We gathered a day pack and hit the supermarket to buy supplies. We headed to the surf beach and set up camp. We threw fifteeny around, went swimming, read our books and generally just chilled out. We were all shocked to see old men using the beach as some sort of naked catwalk. Each of them were sitting by themselves but felt it was necessary to walk down the front of the beach [View Full Entry]

San Sebastian - Sun going down
San Sebastian - Sculptures

My head was a little seedy in the morning and I was adamant I had heard 13 bells ring. I couldn’t believe I had slept until 1pm. Jez had thought the same but when we looked at our watches it was only 10:30am. We realised later that they had some weird bell system. The weather outside was overcast and a light drizzle. I wasn’t going to let that stop me from hitting the beach. Jez begrudgingly came with me and we bought along a ball to throw around. Jez had bought it in Valencia for me seeing as he had lost [View Full Entry]

San Sebastian - Fiftenny - Best purchase ever
San Sebastian - Port
San Sebastian - Sunset

We had another early wake up call but were more accustomed to it now. We made sure we had hardly unpacked anything the night before so we could make a beeline for the bus, (we could also make a quick escape if Terry and Sam started talking about guns again). It was quite cold, due to the high altitude I guess. We watched a few films on the bus and stopped for lunch in Burgos. It is a very religious town and had an enormous yet ornate cathedral. It is a stopping point in the pilgrim’s trip to Santiago. We walked [View Full Entry]

Burgos - Cathedral
San Sebastian - 93 year old Bluey
Burgos

We checked out of our hostel. It was the worst accommodation we had during our travels. There were two old guys that worked there, one was a lovely old guy, the other was a crabby old bastard. We seemed to keep having to deal with the crabby buggar, it didn’t help that every time we tried to enter the hostel Jez had a nightmare with the keys and couldn’t open the door. This would drag the old guy out to let us in and he would give Jez a lecture on how to use keys. I guess it was quite funny, [View Full Entry]

I woke to find it was raining, what a crock, this place is supposed to have 320 sunshine days a year, why the heck did it have to rain when we were there. I decided to go back to bed in the hope it would clear up. By mid morning it had cleared enough for us to go out. We decided food was in order but instead of something cheap and nasty we opted to go to the market. It was huge and rather daunting as it was full of locals and no one spoke any English. We did some scouting, [View Full Entry]

Valencia - Lunch
Valencia - Team NZ village
Valencia - Bullfighting arena by night

I was sad to leave Barcelona, but Valencia was calling. We jumped on the bus at 8am and the guide biffed on Mr and Mrs Smith, I realised that the last time I had seen it was in Suva, Fiji many moons ago. I think I may have had a nap or two before we neared our destination, I was awoken to find out some Valencia facts. They have on average 320 days of sunshine a year, which may explain why oranges are one of the areas main exports. Valencia is also the home of paella, hosts La Tomatina and has [View Full Entry]

Valencia - So many churches
Valencia - The Holy Grail
Valencia - Gargoyles

We woke early to catch breakfast, which really wasn't worth it. One, the food was stale and two some weird guy started hassling me about supporting Chelsea football team. Why, I don't know because I despise Chelsea. Anyway we had a bicycle tour organised and had to find the meeting point. It turned out to be further than we thought so we were sprinting through the streets. We made it only to find that they were pretty relaxed and we didn't start for about half an hour. Our guide was a Saffa called AJ, with a good sense of humour and [View Full Entry]

Barcelona - Bike tour

Andre woke up crazy early to get to the airport. Jez and I walked him to the train station, ha ha yeah right. We grunted goodbyes and went straight back to sleep. We didn't wake again until the hostel staff were shaking our beds and telling us we had to change rooms. We begrudgingly did so, and because we were up we decided to head out. We were starving and decided on Burger King because it was close by. We were dying for a coke, so were devastated when they told us their machine was broken. I understood what the waitress [View Full Entry]

We woke early, packed our bags and walked zombie like to the tram stop. Once in town we grabbed some supplies to aid the hangover - blue powerade, crisps and chuppa chups. As I boarded the Busabout bus I was stoked to see Grant who was our guide on our Croatia sailing trip. He could tell I'd had a big night. Busabout is a fantastic way to travel, they have 3 loops you can tour on, we did the western loop. They run on a every second day schedule, but you can stay in a city for as long as you [View Full Entry]

Busabout guide Nicole

A long sleep in was warranted from all the festivities of yesterday. We sauntered down for breakfast and chatted to an Aussie girl, she was telling us about her travels and her boyfriend when this weird Tasmanian guy who had been lingering around the bar all week came over and tried to start hitting on her. His tactics were worse than Jez's bizarre staring ritual - he talked about marsupials. It was painful, now I know why Tasmania has a bad reputation. Andre and Bluey were in the same dorm room and had been yarning to an Aussie guy Andy and [View Full Entry]
