This year the annual Engineering Conference was held in London. Joe, Carol, Linda and I decided to drive there and spend a few days after the conference visiting the southern coast of England on the way home. On Monday we drove directly to London via the Calais to Dover ferry. After the business meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we were able to spend the evenings taking in some of the cultural aspects of London, including theater. Linda’s tourist passport was about to expire so we took advantage of being across from the U.S. Embassy to go there to renew it. The British guard at the entrance (the U.S. Marine was inside) looked at her about to expire passport and told her that the picture was not her. Linda was taken aback. Then he explained that ... read more

We have just returned from our holiday in Europe I thought I would upload some photos of my 1975 trip to Europe as well What surprised me was the photo of myself standing outside 10 Downing Street the official residence of the Prime Minister. In 1975 I was able to have my photo taken standing on the doortsep but in 2007 the area is bounded by a large security fence and police guards. Times really have changed In 2007 all we could do was to look through a high security fence... read more

As our Los Angeles Geographical Society tour bus approached the border of Scotland and England, the coach driver asked if we wanted to stop at Gretna Green. (Wink, wink!) Gretna Green is famous as the place where couples eloped to marry in the 18th and 19th centuries and avoid parental permission. Wow, was the driver surprised when several of us made a counter proposal! As we are crossing the border into England, let's see Hadrian's Wall instead, we said! (There was not time for both.) I don't think the driver had ever had a group ask to see Hadrian's Wall before. Even Valene demurred and said that the ruins of Hadrian's Wall were nothing like the Great Wall of China. Lee Dodson and I were the most in favor of a stop, and soon others went ... read more

Sunday February 13th - day 1. It is 7am on Sunday morning and I am too nervous to eat much breakfast. It is time to pack the rucksack with the final items and to use this opportunity to leave a few more items behind. Arrived at London Victoria train station at 9.15am which means it is only 45 minutes before the train leaves. Three of us are starting this journey - Michael (an old school friend from Bournemouth), Heather (his girlfriend) and myself. There are about 10 people standing on the platform to wave us goodbye - relatives and friends - who knows when we will see them again? We have reserved seats and in 12 hours time we will have arrived at our first destination Koblenz which is situated at the confluence of the Rhine ... read more

It is 41 years ago that I was sitting in my flat in London counting down the hours before my 4 month trip to Australia started. I guess it is the same for most people but chance played a big part. I had started a new job which did not live up to expectations as instead of career development, I was required to spend months learning the company ways starting at the bottom of the ladder. Luckily an Aussie girl was temping in the office and she created the desire to travel. My flatmates and I returned from the pub one night and there was an advert on TV for the £5 emigration package to Australia. We decided to investigate but by the time I had collected paperwork from the Aussie High Commission, the other three ... read more

1964 Diary Entry "The next morning we got up and had breakfast and then we started to pack for that day we were leaving for London. At about 10 o'clock we got a taxi to the airport. There we had our baggage checked and then we went into the flight waiting room. Soon after that we were called aboard the plane. When we got in we prepared for take off. After take-off we rose and levelled off and after about an hour we landed in London. There we went through passport control and customs. Mum saw Auntie Beth out the door. After we'd finished we went out and saw Auntie Beth." .... and that's where the diary ends. Passport stamps and other assorted evidence tells me that we stayed in London until 11 September, interspersed with ... read more
