We got up pretty early on the 24th and grabbed some breakfast. Since we were still pretty tired from the epic journey out, we arranged for a late check out and went back to nap! Once we had left the warm accomodations, we went to the "luggage hut" and put all our belongings into a locker, received the oh-so-fashionable snowsuits you see in the pictures below, and immediately headed into the icehotel. It was astounding. The photos don't entirely capture the experience, but hopefully they will give something of an impression of what it was like. In addition, at the top of the page are a number of video clips that were filmed as we hung out in the Absolut Icebar for 4 1/2 hours before we went to sleep on our Ice bed... It was ... read more

Welcome to Heathrow... Friday, December 22-23, 5:15pm We arrive from Iceland. The original plan had been to spend the night in London and come back to the airport in the morning for our continuing journey. That was when we were arriving at noon, had our luggage, and outdoor visibility was greater than 2 feet. From London's Daily Mail newspaper for that day: It is difficult to explain to anyone visiting these shores how a dose of winter frost and fog can so easily envelop one of the world's leading airports in chaos and calamity, compelling its national airline to wipe off hundreds of flights at a stroke and stranding passengers for hours, maybe days. For the second day running, these were the horrendous scenes at Heathrow as nearly 200,000 people struggled to get away for Christmas. ... read more

BWI-Reykjavik: flight time 5 hours, 15 minutes Months back, the plan was to fly into Iceland and have a 9-hour layover. Scott felt it would give us the opportunity to leave the airport and see something of Reykjavik before we continued our trek east. This plan was changed after a frank discussion was had that highlighted Kat's preference for not making a long and complicated travel itinerary any longer or complicated than it needed to be. We had rearranged things so as to have a 2-hour layover. Of course, this was before we had a 5-hour delay coming out of BWI. Our entire stay in Iceland involved getting off our plane, commenting on the lovely glass-walled jetways, walking across the hallway, and entering another glass-walled jetway. While we had been flying, it had been announced that ... read more

Thursday, December 21/ BWI Scott & I were married on December 9th, in Key West, Florida. During the festivities, we were frequently asked where we would be going for our honeymoon. Having traveled extensively over the 6 1/2 years of our life together, we decided to head somewhere different for our romantic getaway. To a hotel built of ice & snow... The ICEHOTEL is situated in the village Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The heart and backbone is the River Torne flowing freely through the unspoilt wilderness. Covered with a meter thick ice layer winter time the river is the source of all our art, architecture and design. The pure water and the steady movement of the river creates the clearest ice possible." -http://www.icehotel.com/ HONEYMOON (Miriam Webster) Etymology: from the idea ... read more
