Dave & Cathy

Dave Cathy

Off for 7 months round the world so that we can hide (skive) from work for a bit.

Seeing a little of the world and drinking a few of it's beers.

Mrs Deane has given Mr Deane full reign to write this blog so it will probably be low on real journalism and high on poor attempts at humour. There will be a selection of photos, generally of one of us in front of an historic building such as McDonald's in Bangkok or KFC in Singapore.

Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today. Yes, we're off to that big traveller destination in the sky also known as home time. It's been a while coming but we knew that eventually real life was going to kick us in the b-hind. Not to worry, we'll just start planning our next holiday now. As for New York, it's been another few chilled out days seeing a few sights, doing a little shopping and trying my hardest to get to 200 beers. All good fun. On Monday we actually managed to get off Manhatten for the first time so far. We were out and about early heading to Coney Island. Famous for several things, the place is a little like a run down Blackpool if that is possible. Once home to the most famous New York ... read more

Howdy folks, First up, a little note about the blog site. It has been down for a few days due to some kind of server-crash-jiggery-pokery. Bad news is that we lost 35 blogs. I could have cried. Thankfully (due to the magic of internet) I have since found 31 of them and I'm currently looking for the other 4. I'll let you know when I find them and restore them all. Anyway, you don't want to be bored with all that nonsense - you just want your 2 minutes of mild amusement to break up the working day. We're in The Big Apple taking it easy and relaxing. It's our final stop (boo hoo) on our trip as we head home on Friday. I can't believe it has all gone so quick. New York is great. ... read more

LA. It's a strange place. Sprawling, smoggy, congested, spread out and decicedly run down in parts. Bits are nice, other bits aren't so nice. We're still not sure quite what to make of it. Some cities you instantly like. This one we didn't. It's not that we really disliked it either. Just an unusual place. We rolled into town in the morning (slowly obviously due to traffic) and checked into a motel before heading off in the direction of Hollywood. Lunch was excellent. The new 1/3 pounder Angus bacon and cheese burger at McD's. Mmmm. Hollywood is nowhere near as nice as it looks on tv. No stars or celebs in sight. The walk of fame and footprints / handprints of the stars are cool but seem a little out of place. We saw the chinese ... read more

After our time in Vegas we set off in search of a little slice of Americana in the desert. We were following hot on the heels of some personal heroes of mine - Calum, Fran & Dangerous Danan. Yes, we were taking a little trip down 50's memory lane with a cruise down good ol' route 66. It's a fair treck out of Vegas into the desert and if you don't make it out of bed very early then it can be fairly late before you get anywhere. We only got to the start of our stretch of Route 66 at about lunchtime. We were beginning in Kingman and travelling as far as Williams. This is part of the longest intact section of the original still left and is a little like a timewarp. There are ... read more

If I had known that we could have seen the entire world whilst visiting only one city then we could have saved ourselves a lot of time and money by simply coming to Vegas. In the last few days we have been to Paris, New York, ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, Venice, been on safari, etc, etc. Yes, Vegas is tacky to the extreme but it's quite nice. We've only had the three nights in Vegas but it's served as an excellent recovery place as we now feel fit and raring to go again. We've managed to cover pretty much all the main things to do in Vegas. First up, where to stay? The Bellagio? Mirage? Well, if you've been to Vegas then you'll know the busiest intersection is where the Tropicana, MGM Grand, New York New ... read more

You wait ages for a blog and two come along at once. As Mrs Deane mentioned the internet access over here is poor. Very poor. Not much of it and very expensive. The American wilderness on the other hand is absolutely beautiful. Over the last few days we've meandered through or past Yosemite, Mono Lake, Sequoia and Death Valley national parks on our way to some rest and relaxation in Vegas. We've both been mildly ill - the evidence of this will be in the dearth of beer reviews. Our first day out into the interior of the US was mainly a driving day as we covered about 4 hours over to Yosemite. The temp gradually rose from about 70 to about 90 before dipping again as we started to head up into Yosemite. The tent ... read more

Welcome to America dudes! Here we are in the land of the free and the brave. The land of big portions and cheap food. The land where 80% of the population are on the web, but they have no internet cafes. So, after many requests from friends and family we have finally taken time out from our busy schedule to get out of the heat and let you all catch up on our American adventure. Firstly after an excessively long day where we passed the international date line and re-lived half of Sat 14th, we landed in LA and picked up our hire car. Going up in the world as this time we got to choose, and went for a Chrysler PT Cruiser - the funny looking one. Very nice car, very roomy except that as ... read more

Afternoon everyone. Sorry about the delay in blogging but we have been on Fiji time. 1 day kind of melted into 12 as we relaxed. And relaxed. And lazed... Fiji is a wonderful place. From the moment we landed we were told constantly that everything was on Fiji time and that we needed to slow down. So we did. We spent our first 9 days island hopping through the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands and then our last few days around Nadi with a bit of diving and sight seeing. So then, back to the beginning. We loaded our bags onto the Yasawa Flyer boat (a big catamaran full of backpackers) and set off. We headed to the far end of the Yasawas to Tavewa to begin our hopping at Coral View Resort. We turned up at ... read more

Just a little snippet of a blog to reassure all concerned fans (just Sara actually) and my dear mother that we are indeed alive and kicking. We have just returned from a 9 day stint island hopping on the Yasawa and Manamuca Islands and there are no phones, internet and sometimes no electricity on them, hence no blog. There will be a full, comprehensive blog in a couple of days time so if you can hold on till then that would be great. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. Very kind of you all. Looking forward to all the presents and the soggy chocolate cake on the doorstep. Dave & Mrs Deane. P.S. Fiji is brilliant P.P.S. On the job front I have received my very first job offer as a travel writer. It's from a ... read more
