We set off to our first border crossing on our own, filled with the fear of questions we wouldn't understand, surprise entry taxes and full cavity searches. As it turned out, we could've walked straight over the border and no-one would have noticed. Needless to say we didn't but it was a relief to find it all so simple. Arriving in Bolivia at Villazon was an immeadiate culture shock, summed up by saying it's busier, crazier, dustier and certainly poorer (moneywise only). We settled into a cafe for lunch while we waited for our bus north, listening to other travellers stories and the rumour mill instilling more fear into us about our travels in Bolivia. The buses surely can't be that bad can they? Read on my friends! We boarded our bus to Tupiza, about 4 ... read more

Tupiza is a city in the Southwest of Bolivia famous for being the area in which Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid met their demise, and for the beautiful surrounding countryside. Many people compare it to the "Wild West." While it isnt so wild, and I cant say it is as stunning as Bryce Canyon or Zion, it is gorgeous. The red, sandstone rock, the clear, deep azul skies, and the verdant green cacti and trees make a brilliant kaladeiscope of contrasting colors. The "thing to do" in the area is to jump on horse back and see the amazing landscape from the saddle. It took a little prodding to get Eric into the idea, but eventually he came around and we had an amazing time. We set off ... read more

After a bit of shopping around we decide to go with Grano de Oro, run by the shiny happy Sylvia. We´ll be sharing our jeep with 2 nurses who have been doing volunteer work in Ecuador...Trisha from Lincolnshire and her Aussie parter Lindy. Ritch´s enthusiasm for this all-girl action is quickly dampened on meeting them and realising that real lesbians do not match up the pretend lipstick variety! They are great company and we all get on brilliantly from the offing. The scenery around Tupiza is stunning...bright blue sky, hundreds of cactus and the dramatic reddish rock formations called Palala which look like fins, and El Sillar which resemble a stone forest. The landscape changes everytime you go over another pass, getting ever more desolate and the scale is stunning. If you got left behind here, ... read more

Hier gibt es ... read more

Day 87 - Wednesday 24th September: Riding in Bolivia's Wild West Get up at 8am after three and a half hours of proper sleep. Feeling lethargic but want to go horse riding today - the purpose of coming to Tupiza. Wasn't originally going to come to Tupiza but a number of people have recommended it, and they can't all be wrong, or can they? Coming into regular contact with other travellers you get advised to go to various places, most of which I don't do as you simply can't do everything, but there was something about Tupiza which intrigued me. Maybe its the chance to get some riding practice in before my stay on a ranch in Argentina in 3 weeks or the stunning scenery I've seen in photographs. Anyway, I quickly walk around the town ... read more

First of all Lau says thanks for all her birthday messages......I´ll come on to how we celebrated in a second!!! It´s been really eventful since our last blog and we´ve started to find warmer weather. The salt flats at Uyuni were amazing and we had a full day checking them out. The whole group jeeped out onto the flats and we´ve some unbelieveable photos. (Managed to borrow a camara from our group leader but haven´t got the lead to upload.......sorry). Some of the group had a bit of a scare.....one of the wheels dropped off the last jeep. Luckily just as they were setting off but it could have been really nasty.....Bolivian health and safety isn´t the best.....you should see the electric showers!! Overall the day was great but the best was yet to come. The group ... read more

Was fuer eine Nacht!!!

After finally tearing ourselves away from Buenos Aires we got back on the road again, managing to cram all our belongings into two bags each (not bad considering the number of football shirts Ryan bought!). First stop was Iguazu Falls, on the border with Brazil and Paraguay, which was absolutely beautiful: stunning waterfalls coming out of the jungle, pretty much what we imagined when we wanted to come here travelling. We took a day trip into Brazil to see the falls from the brazilian side, and stopped off in Paraguay at the dodgiest cheap electronics town ever, Ciudad del Este. We then spent 24 hours on a bus travelling across the north of Argentina to Salta. Salta has some lovely architecture, and some pretty nice scenery too. The campsite we stayed in had the biggest swimming ... read more
