Farewell Chile When we left Argentina on December 26th I thought it might be the last time we'd see this great country (on this trip), but since then we've returned three times from Chile. We just can't get enough of it! This latest visit was very much a last minute decision: Bolivia was our next planned destination and the best route in from San Pedro de Atacama seemed to be via Argentina. So we left San Pedro at 10.30am, and all was going fine until close to the border at the Jama Pass. Then, the bus engine started overheating, as it apparently didn't like the altitude! We stopped a couple of times, then struggled onto the border, where there was a 5 hour wait for a replacement bus from Calama. The border pass is at a ... read more

OK, so having arrived in Tupiza in fairly typical style- as Tim says "Bolivian transport is a whole different monkey".. he´s right, we checked into the hotel mitru having heard that is was as cheap as the hostels (true) and has a pool- joy! the rest of tupiza was pretty low key small town stuff: first night went to a terrible tourist eatery (dumb) next night more wisely (is that a word) went to a local scrummy place and scranned a cow.. mm! Having arrived we booked a trip through the salt flats to Uyuni, and went horse riding (lots of running- cantar I think- Fran?) around the spectacular red desert and cacti scenery (see photos of big red rocks). The next day we set off on a 4 day trip in a 4x4 with another ... read more

After the excitement and inspirational tour of the Salar de Uyuni, the town of Uyuni itself (with the exception of the quite exceptional MinuteMan pizza restaurant) was rather, well, dull and uninspiring. So much so that - after updating our blog - we were quite keen to leave on the first train, bus or donkey. Our next destination was to be Tupiza - Bolivia's 'Wild West', less than 200 km to the South-East. Unfortunately, escaping Uyuni proved to be rather more of a challenge than we had anticipated. A train heads south to the Argentinian border every 2-3 days, but by the time we had got our brains in gear, we had missed the first available train, so it would be at least 48hrs before we could hop on another. No problem. Buses leave to Tupiza ... read more

A couple hours after getting on the night bus from Salta to the Bolivian border the rain started. Seen as this was a dirt road, when you looked out the window it actually looked like we were driving up the middle of a river. I'm sure this wasn't the worst conditions this driver has experienced and we got to the border town early the next morning. With a couple of Israeli girls and a Swedish girl we had met along the way we headed to the Argentinian immigration office to get our exit stamps. No problems here except the fact that the Israelis seem to have taken every belonging they have to South America for a 3 week holiday. Apart from there backpacks and frontpacks they also have the biggest suitcase available on the market to ... read more

From Salta we bused 7 hours to the border towns ( La Quaica on the Argentine side and Villazon on the Bolivian side). With another stamp in our passport we then proceeded a further 3 hours to Tupiza, 3000m above sea level. He we did a day tour which consisted of seeing the views in a Jeep and on bikes. The last bike ride in the evening we were taken up to 3700m and told to ride 'slowly' back to Tupiza and to keep control around the winding paths with huge drops. What spectacular views though - as you can see from the photo's. On the 21st of Feb, at 7pm, we got the night train to Uyuni which arrived at 2am. We decided to get the train because this form of transport is a rarity ... read more

After finishing off our Salares tour late in the afternoon we were lucky enough to score tickets on the night train out of Uyuni to Tupiza. Once again there were troubles with the roads south, so we were very lucky to be in possesion of these train tickets. After another long night of no sleep, the next morning me and Karin said goodbye to Bridget and Russell and got off at Tupiza for a couple of days in the wild west. If there is any where that you want to throw your leg over a hourse, brandish spurs and say, ´ride em cowboy´ this is it. Reminiscent of the American wild west, but more spectacular, the tranquil settlement is set at 2950m and ringed by an amzing landscape of rainbow coloured rocks, hills, mountains and canyons ... read more

We crossed the Argentinian - Bolivian border by walk very early in the morning. There is just a bridge across the river and the control offices on the each side of it. There were no problems and bolivian officer was very kind to us. Here started our Bolivian part of the trip. We enjoyed it very much. Bolivia is very different country. We were worried how it will be. But it was not necessary. Everybody is selling something and offering it to you here. They are shouting the names of destinations at the bus stations and from buses - because not everybody knows to read here. The toilets are very basic at lot of places - water is in big barrels and you need to use a bucket to splash the toilet. Lots of roads is ... read more

Hi again everyone, Well this is just a quick blog entry to say hi again and I hope you are all having top times wherever you may be! I thought I would load up a head of photos onto this entry since the last one was sadly lacking in them, so I hope you enjoy seeing the sights. Also, I have to admit that it is raining here so I am killing time in an internet cafe until it stops! I am continuing to have a top time in Bolivia. I sent about 6 days in a wonderful city called Sucre. It is a very beautiful city with a very Italian feel to it - lots of whitewashed colonial buildings with red brick roofs. The surrounding countryside is also gorgeous with lots of opportunities for hiking ... read more

Hey, sorry, these entries are so boring - I have left it too long to write them and can´t remember as many datails as I would like.... bear with me! Right, next leg of the trip is to Bolivia, but no direct bus there as have to change at the border. Took an overnight bus to La Quiaca from Salta which was supposed to take 7 hours.... when everyone started getting off the bus after only 5.5 hours, I thought "hmmm, this is a popular spot where ever it is.... but why on earth does it say welcome to La Quiaca???" - whoops was there already and it is pitch black outside (5am!). We head inside the "bus station" (very make shift type of place) and stood there thinking what on earth now??? Lots of locals ... read more

So made it down to Tupiza (again) this time with most things in tact! Turns out the girls from Loki had come to Tupiza and I bumped into them at breakfast! Was pretty tired after another 18hr bus journey but had a relax by the pool and they were going horse riding so I thought why not! Had lunch and went to get a horse! Pretty wierd, and once it started moving was pretty scary! On a very hungry horse kept trying to wander off and munch on some vegitation! Once we got on the trail, went through some amazing scenery, red mountains and rock formations etc. Then the guides thought it would be a good idea to go faster, was now scared. Very hard to time the bouncing up and down and pretty much just ... read more
