San Antonio de Lipez to Laguna Colorada also known as a VERY, VERY long day in a Jeep We started the day early...wake up call at about 6am. Most everyone was feeling pretty rough as the altitude affected the ability to sleep. A lil' Nescafé mixed with "Chocolike" (this creation dubbed the Bolivian Mocha) and some bread with jam and we were on our way. We drove past ruins, volcanoes, wee villages, a small salt flat, hot springs, deserts with bizarre rock formations and geysers. We listened to Bolivian music, we listened to Guns 'n Roses, we took photos....LOTS of photos. I'll let them tell the story here.... read more

So we had come all the way to southern Bolivia to do one thing - the Salar de Uyuni tour. Actually we were doing the extended Tupiza version. We were to embark on a big loop through southern Bolivia and end up on the world's largest salt flat. We were not leaving the first day until 9:30 the first morning, so Kevyn and I took the opportunity to wander around town and we stumbled into the already bustling central market. We definitely felt out of place and did not feel that great about shooting photos but we did shoot a few discreetly and I decided this was payback for all the times people take pictures of Kevyn at Silver Salmon. Anyways the beauty of the market was stunning and I am glad we left late. At ... read more

(Kevyn here) We decided a few weeks earlier that we probably had time to visit Bolivia. Our friends, Pete and Ashely, who travelled around South America for several months last year, spoke very highly of the 4x4 tours of the slat flats in the southwestern part of Bolivia. Of course, always wanting to emulate our friends, we decided we had to add that to the itinerary also. But we really didn't know much about Bolivia. We managed a peak at anothe traveller's guide book and got some place names on the internet. With a little bit of research and a lot of hope, we embarked on a journey to get us to Tupiza, where the tour we wanted to take was leaving in just two days. Getting to the tour on time (9am Saturday morning) required ... read more

My Bolivian leg began yesterday. I´m travelling with a girl I met on the plane from Australia - NIna. So far, Bolivia has been quite a saga. We took a bus (very comfy) to the ARgentinian border where we had to get off and cross the border on foot into Bolivia. After a LOT of queuing and passport stamping, we were finally in. Thankfully, Nina and I met three very cool Argentinians (uni students) entering Bolivia on holiday, too. We were up at 5:30 to catch the bus to the border expecting to catch a train in Bolivia to Uyuni that afternoon. The bus was great, but they didn´t videotape us (as they have done to ohters i know) before we left so that they could identify us should the bus crash - reassuring. in bolivian ... read more

After a great nights sleep and a filling breakfast, I was ready for a full-day of biking and horseback riding. The tour was suppose to last seven and half hours, including a break for lunch. On my tour, I was joined by an Israeli woman (with Canadian citizenship as well). That was it, only one other person. I guess there aren't that many tourists going through Tupiza at this time of year that wanted to do this circuit. The first part of our tour was on bike and this would end up at a lookout point at Entre Rios. It is hard to concentrate on biking all the time with spectacular scenery all around. Most of the ride out to Entre Rios, Orna and I biked by each other, talking most of the time and stopping ... read more

Well the hope of sleeping in on New Year's Day was shattered at seven in the morning by one of the bands from the night before passing by the our hotel still going strong. As there is no way I could sleep through the music and singing, I decided to get dressed and join them as I figured I might as well use my time wisely. I can't believe that these people were still going from the night before. Where they found all the energy to keep on dancing in the streets in unknown to me. These people were still chugging back beer as well. I was very impressed by this. This will definitely be a memorable way to wake up on New Year's Day. I followed the band around town for about 45 minutes before ... read more

The Town of Tupiza

Once again it was another early for me. I was told to be at the bus office at 4:45AM for my 5AM departure for Tupiza. Surprisingly for 5AM bus, it was full and I seemed to be the only tourist on this bus. There isn't much to write about the first part of my journey and the minute I got on the bus, I fell asleep. I was awakened in the town of Atocha at about 7:30AM and told that I would have a three hour layover until the next bus left for Tupiza. I tell you one thing, having a three hour layer from 7:30AM to 10:30AM on a Sunday morning is not the best time to be visiting Atocha. This town doesn't even get mentioned in any of the tour books, such as my ... read more

Yeee Haaa another western town.Tupiza is hot, small and offers adventure sports, thus why Rich felt the need to stop here. We stayed in a nice hotel with one of our first experiences of using a pool and the wonderful cable tv. With a short stop over we spent a day lounging around the pool and challenging ourselves - once again. We opted for the triathlon day. Well, in all honesty Rich completed the triathlon and I joined him for a small part. The triathlon included mountain bike riding , horse riding and jeep tour. I joined Rich for the horse-riding. It was a sweltering day, the tour was fun , however such small details as helmets and safety instructions were left out , which we have found is a Bolivian trait. So basically if you ... read more

After leaving the jungle we headed south for Oruro..enough said about that place! Then we got the train to Tupiza, wild west country. Tupiza is where Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid met their makers. We headed out horse riding for the day to check out the spectacular surroundings of canyons and mountains. We then made our way down through northern Argentina through the european style cities of Salta, Cordoba and Mendoza. From Mendoza we headed west through the Andes to Los Penitentes where we spent a few days skiing before the ski season ended honing our skills! With two days to go till the end of our South America trip be crossed the border into Chile and Chillied out in Santiago! Arrived in Auckland last week. Well, we arrived in Bolivia after a fun wait at the border, and it's a very different world from the riches of Argentina and Brazil. From dusty Tupiza we picked up a 4 day tour taking us to the most remote (and coldest) part of this planet we have ever visited. In our group were a splendid English couple called Lucy and Miles (Nottingham Forest fans bless em!) and the formidable Kim - the biggest South Korean in the world. We set off on day one in the jeep (that was to become our home) with our driver Javier and Marta, our less than accomplished cook. Tupiza is at 2900m above sea level, and is essentially a dust bowl of a town surrounded by bleak mountains of different shades of red and not a tree in ... read more
