We've just been looking through our blog at the things we've done over the past 6 months and we can't quite believe our time in NZ is coming to an end. We've had a great time here in NZ, and have met lots of friendly folk who have made us feel very welcome. Despite having cleaned the van inside and out and packed most of our stuff away, we're still somewhat in denial about handing the van over and being homeless and on the homestretch. We've given our fantastic BBQ to Pete who lives and works at the Arrowtown Camp whom we know will put it to good use, and perhaps give the odd sausage to Clarence the campsite cat. And we've posted back home most of the 'stuff' we've accumulated, in a huge box weighing ... read more

Before leaving New Zealand, I drove around with Evan to the Milford Sound, Dunedin, and then up the east coast to Christchurch, where we went our separate ways. I was able to sell my car for only $100 less than what I bought it for, despite it stalling for this first time on the day I sold it. I then spent a week working for accommodation for a family just south of Christchurch. I then hitched out to Akaroa, where I immediately wished I had more time to spend, due to its' small town feel and the beautiful coastal scenery. The owners of the hostel which I was staying at were from North Salem in Westchester and moved out to New Zealand seven years ago. They also owned a sail boat that took out guests of ... read more

Our first day began with beautiful blue NZ skies and sunshine. We drove from Sumner to Akaroa (panorama photo above) which had spectacular views. The terrain is very rugged with lots of outdoor activist. We watched a helicopter rescue of a mountain biker. On our return the clouds came in and the winds blew hard. So the weather can change very quickly. We then drove to Christchurch to see some of the sights. , mainly Cathedral Square. Had lunch in this college town with it's shops, pubs, and students all around. We have one more night here at Le Petit in Sumner. More Photos ... read more

On Friday Claire went swimming with Dolphins, the most rarest and smallest in the world 'Hector Dolphins' or some may call them 'New Zealand Dolphins' since they are only found in New Zealand. This was amazing and you were able to get up and close with them.... Although you wasn't able to touch them since they are very delicate and have scars, we could harm them and pass on diseases because of our bacteria but they came close enough. Shaun took video footage and pics from the boat. The whole experience lasted for 2hrs and I was in the water for well over a hour. There was only 10 swimmers at any one time, which was better and meant you didn't scare the dolphins - apparently they have poor eyesight and don't actually see you until ... read more

Day 4 In the early morning, went to buy Petrol (@ NZ $1.75 per litre) at the nearby Shell Petrol Station. It cost about $85 to fill up the tank. Drove to the Botanic Gardens & had a walk around for about 20 minutes. Today we were all going for a drive to Akaroa, which is just over 80 kms from Christchurch. All the families (from Australia) were going, so we needed 3 cars. On the way to Akaroa, saw some bare hills that had a rectangular patch of pine trees. Then we saw this large rocky outcrop bes... read more

So, i spent New Year's In Christchurch with my friends Flo, Sophia (met in Tui) and Lana, Emma and Sophie (met in Taupo). We did our fire spinning on New Year's eve and i did a little bit of fire breathing (went off without a hitch that time) a generally great night was had by all, and there will be photos at some point. Spurred on by our success on New Year's Flo and I repeated the Fire spinning the next night. It was going well, i breathed a little fire, then Flo had a go. He set his beard on fire a little, but suffered no other i'll effects. Rather than taking this as a warning i continued fire-breathing. A little lighter fuel ran down my chin and across my face, and without warning my ... read more

29 12 07 We had our first real day out & about today, we went off to Akora, about 50 miles South of Christchurch. Helen went in her car with 2 kids & we pinched Streves 4x4 to follow on with the rest of the crew. The weather was sunny but there was a cool breeze. The journey was quite a good one, the roads varied from long dead straight ones to very tight & twisty ones through the mountains. We were going to go out to sea on a boat to go dolphin watching but it was very choppy & the kids decided they would rather play on the beach all day instead. I cant believe you come half way round the world & the people sat next to you on the beach are broard ... read more

Today is the day we left Christchurch. We picked up our Nissan Sunny Super Tourer from Apex Rentals. We had the same car on our North Island trip last year. They’re a great car. Plenty of room for us both, and does about 6L/100km - even when you’re going over hill and down dale, in which there are large quantities in NZ. And that’s handy when fuel is NZ$1.75/L. Our mission for today is to see the Banks Peninsula, the main town of which is Akaroa. After that, drive on to Kimbell - a ‘wee town near Fairlie’, as our host described it to us. We set off for the Banks Peninsula and on the way saw an interesting detour which would take us to Diamond Harbour via Gobbler’s Pass. This was a lovely drive, and ... read more

Lähin kylä ... read more

We headed to Akaroa, which is 50 or so miles away from Christchurch, and stopped along a beach recommended by Liz and Warrick. Instead of sand, the beach had a shore of very round and smooth rocks. Then we stopped by a small art gallery which included some jewelry made out of these rocks. After lunch and a stroll around Akaroa, we headed over to Okines Bay where we kicked off our shoes and waded into the Pacific. On our way back to Christchurch, we took the scenic route which includes steep cliffs, no guard rails, and a ‘two’ lane road over the ridge lines above Akaroa. Back in Christchurch, we went to the local “Fish and Chippy” for a high calorie New Zealand tradition.... read more
