Of all my China adventures this short trip to Fujian Province to visit the Tulous proved to be one of the best yet. My good friend David Zeng helped with all the logistics and we both flew into Xiamen to begin our journey. We left from Xiamen by bus and 3 hours later stopped in Longyan for the night. Longyan is a city of 1 million located in the southwest part of Fujian Province. We arranged a driver to pick us up the next morning and take us deep into the mountains another 2 hours to our first stop, Hongkeng Villiage. Set amongst rice, tea and tobacco fields the tulou are earthen houses. Several stories high, they are built along an inward-looking, circular or square floor plan as housing for up to 800 people each. They ... read more

Asia » China » Hainan » Sanya September 30th 2008

Having a week off in celebration of China's National Week gave us an opportunity to travel to the tropical resort island called Hainan to the city of Sanya. Sanya is the southernmost city in Hainan (海南) province, China. Luckily our 4 day excursion ended up sandwiching right between 2 typhoons so the weather was beautiful. The typhoon activity here in Asia seems to have picked up much like the hurricane activity of the U.S. After a smooth one hour and twenty minute flight from Guangzhou we landed and took a taxi to our hotel. Easy enough, especially for a couple of misfit Mississippians making their way through southern China. As with most all holidays in China there are lots of families traveling. Sanya proved to be a beautiful retreat spot with plenty of sun and sand. ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Shunde September 21st 2008

Another Shunde experience took place on Sunday as we entered the "Shunde Cooking Contest" hosted by the mayor and other gov't officials. Marc came home from work a week ago saying that I had to cook in this contest and I said "no way." First I cannot find the ingredients here to cook any American dishes and I told him I did not want to participate. However he comes home the next day with the recipe I am to use. It is called Asian Stir Fry Chicken with Assorted Peppers, and all the ingredients would be on hand at the contest, all I had to do was show up .So off we go on the day of the contest which took place in the park across the street from our apt. I did it with the ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Anchorage August 22nd 2008

Alaska truly is one of the greatest adventure spots of the U.S. My son Matt and I decided to meet in Anchorage for a father/son week of adventure and a visit with my good friends Tom and Cinda Devine. Matt flew in from Tennessee and I arrived from southern China. Leaving the densely populated territory of southern China to the wilderness of Alaska for a week of solitude was quite a change not only in climate , but for population as well. China has 351 people per sq. mile and Alaska has 1.2. The week turned out to be better than we ever expected. My friends Tom & Cinda live just outside of Anchorage in Chugiak in a beautiful log home with their three girls. Their gear shack became our guest room and home base for ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Shunde June 21st 2008

I came to China to join my husband who was working here as a general manager, and wasn't sure about the teaching opportunities. Being in an area that has few foreigners, in fact I know of no other Americans here in this city, my first priority was to just get acclimated to my new location in a new culture where I did not speak the language. After several months I was asked to teach for a language company in a school nearby. Naively I said yes, but after only 2 days decided that this was not for me. The class size alone is intimidating as 60 elementary kids are crowded in a room. I found it hard to keep there attention and to talk over them. For some this is not a problem, but for me ... read more

The most important trip you may take in life is meeting people halfway. In the summer of 2006 I traveled to China for the very first time in my life. In addition to the technical and vocational challenges that I knew I would face I had a strong desire to get to know the people and culture of China in a much deeper way than just a visit. The people of China have proven to be friendlier and more interested in me (a westerner) than I ever was expecting. Because of that I have learned so much and experienced things I never dreamed of. During my first month in Shunde I would walk the streets almost every day with camera in hand and eyes wide open. Being the only American in a city of 1 million ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China May 26th 2008

We decided to celebrate our 29th anniversary by climbing The Great Wall. We weren't sure exactly what to expect, but it did not disappoint. We got up early and were the first visitors on the wall by 8:00 am Monday morning. We were not expecting as many steps along the wall as we encountered, but the climbs were worth it as it was truly a spectacular sight. It was quite a pleasure as we did not encounter the large crowds as we had in seeing the other Beijing sights. A great place to be for a memorable wedding anniversary!
