It's okay. The doctor says he's 90% sure it's just a cold, but he gave me an amoxicillin prescription, just in case he's mistaken. He was also nice enough to give me a prescription for Tylenol with Codeine for my shoulder and a prescription of industrial-strength ibuprofen for the costochondritis. ... read more

Friday morning we had a slight panic when Julian couldn't find his passport (it was in his pocket all along apparently) then went to pick up our hire car before meeting very briefly with Taniamaree to exchange greetings & hugs. We then drove over to Akaroa via Lyttelton enjoying the high views downn to various little bays. Be also stopped briefly at Birdlings Flats - a pebble beach that looked slightly surreal! We got to Akaro, checked in then decided to go for a brief stroll before supper. We ended up getting Fish & Chips to eat on the sea front (locally caught fish) then walked back the scenic route up & around the back streets & grassy spaces. One road was a little steep & stoney & we slipped a little bit along it at ... read more

Well we didn't hang around in Dunedin long, we got a little stage fright with the size of the town, the urban sprall and the traffic - not sure how we'll cope when we get back to Melbourne (might be the time to see if there is some desk space at Telecom NZ......) We had to do the Cadbury tour in Dunedin, it was actually very good and we got a great little doggy bag each. We then spent the afternoon at Larnach castle. It was nice to walk through the castle (still some reno's to be completed) and the gardens - we didn't get any view though as the low cloud had set in. It gave the castle an awe of mystery though and was special to see the cloud and mist blow past. ... read more

I enjoyed Christchurch and i'm a bit reluctant to leave, but i had to because there is so much ahead of me to see. I'd had a glimpse of the Banks Peninsula from the top of the Gondola and it did look enticing. My drive there was over narrow, steep climbing roads with lots of intrepid cyclists and wonderful views over land and sea. From the top of the saddle overlooking Akaroa harbour - very like a Scottish sea loch but actually a flooded volcanic crater (and an enormous one at that) - the views were magnificent. The road to Akaroa took me through some pretty little villages on the coast with some interesting signs leading to tempting high level country routes and coastal bays. Akaroa was absolutley charming. It's French history is reflected in it's ... read more

First, when driving down those hairpin turns beside very deep gorges with very, very little road (in Canadian terms) in frosty winter months, try singing very loudly. It helps relax the muscles and it probably is a cheerful way to meet your maker if anything goes wrong. Second, why pay for rental car when you can get one for free or a dollar if you check out this website: http://www.transfercar.co.nz/ This is especially good if you come out of season, there are more cars and caravans to choose from that need driving to next city. I decided to skip the cheap vehicle because I want to take the scenic train north and rest my nerves. ha ha It would probably be easier if there was more than one to navigate the road signs and maps and ... read more

Waking up this morning and not being able to see our breath was quite a novelty, but no surprise as it had been raining in the night. What was a surprise was the glorious sunshine when we pulled back the curtains. In fact, it has been really hot all day today - we really can’t believe how lucky we have been with the weather! So, once more over the longest bridge, we drove down to find the site we couldn’t find last night. It was quite a way, and it was a lovely site, but it was much further out than we thought it was, so we decided we wouldn’t stay tonight. The countryside was very flat, and we weren’t surprised when we passed through Lincoln, and it was very reminiscent of the Fens. There is ... read more

*Disclaimer: so because i suck and can't manage to ever keep up to date with this thing, I'm giving y'all a very brief version of my adventures. if you wanna know the details, just ask * ...I decide to finally write again. Yeah, somehow I should discipline myself to write more often. Let's see... what have i been up to? well, I started school. wait, what? school? I have to go to school here? but why? oh yeah, that's right, i'm STUDYING abroad. well, eff. Let's just say that school here versus Berkeley is kind of a joke. yet the funny thing is, i'll probably do worse academically here than i ever have at Berkeley, because one, I'm not stimulated enough. and two, I'm too flippin distracted by all the awesome pretty things to see and ... read more

I haven’t updated in quite some time. So I’ll quickly bring you all up to pace. After leaving Picton I had a quick stop in Christchurch. The main city on the south island, however it’s really just a large town. It’s apparently very English with its stone church and large square and a river running through the city. Though, I haven’t been to England, so I’ll just take it as truth. In Christchurch I visited a couple of Art galleries, the Canterbury Museum, and the Botanical Gardens. After leaving Christchurch, I headed east to Akaroa in the banks peninsula. I stayed in Akaroa for 2 months - November 22 up until January 29th. I had arrived in Akaroa to wwoof (work for Accommodation and food) at Purple Peak Retreat which is a hostel/campground/walker’s café. Akaroa is ... read more

Akaroa Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, New Zealand is a relatively active volcanic and seismic region. The mountains here may not be as high and colossal as the ones in the Himalayas. But the constant movement and collisions of Earth crustal plates create a very dynamic landscape. The peaks and valleys are intermingled in a fractal like formation, the bodies of water and the lands create mesmerizing collage. Thanks to the Earth’s past fury, the Banks Peninsula is filled with hidden coves, bays, and spectacular coastlines. At a high vista point, I could see serpentine creeks and rivers meeting at a secluded azure cove. A man in a rain poncho sat on his small boat in the middle of the cove. A group of kids were playing soccer on the beach. The gray clouds ... read more
