We stayed at Don’s for couple of days, being entertained by his vast knowledge of everything, enjoying great food (including my favourite Hokey Pokey ice cream, with honeycomb crunchy bits) and going for some lovely walks around the area. On the Saturday we visited Taylor’s Mistake a local beach near Godley Head that has a great selection of original style NZ bach’s (the Kiwi equivalent of a beach hut), some of which have become more like homes. Sunday saw us start the day at Don’s weekly meditation class, which focused around the Buddhist belief that ‘you may die today’ - essentially another way of saying don’t have regrets, but get on with your life. Then we walked around Victoria Park and up to the local landmark “The sign of the Kiwi”, before driving to Governor’s Bay, ... read more

Akaroa Australasia » New Zealand » South Island » Akaroa By Pinky and The BrainJune 30th 2007Emily and DennyAkaroa - June 20, 2007... We drove down to the Banks Peninsula from Christchurch wednesday morning. It was cloudy that day, but we still had a nice time driving around enjoying the scenery. We stopped in a little place in the harbor inlet called Barrys Bay, and on to the town of Akaroa. Akaroa was originally a French colony, and many aspects of the town still reflect that heritage. We stayed in a really neat old house that was tur... read more

Hello from New Zealand!! Well we arrived in Nz at 11.00 pm at night so did not see alot on the way in so when we woke up the next morning we did not no what to expect!! We were awoken with a massive cooked breakfast and me and chris had separate double beds each that night..Romantic ay (due to chris having a cold)!! We then got taken to the campervan hire company by our hotel which was handy! we were told that 30% of the people in Nz did not have insurance on there vechails and that it would be avisable to get it so we did through Britz/maui it was a reasonable price to get full comp so if any thing happens to the van we are covered!! Also as we paid for ... read more

Today we decided to bravely venture out into the Banks Peninsula, by doing a catamaran tour in search of the Hector's dolphin (Tutumairekurai) - one of the worlds rarest, and the smallest species of dolphin. They did perform on queue, and even in 11 degrees water you soon forgot the coldness as this fabulous species greeted us! It did not take long to find a group of seven Hector dolphins willing to swim with us, and enjoyed being entertained by our presence. They swam quickly directly past us, behind us etc extremely close, but of course we could not have any direct interaction as this is a wild species - so we must respect them! Just their presence and willingness to join our company by free choice was an unforgettable experience in their natural habitat. ... read more

Today we decided to do a tramway tour of Christchurch known as the 'garden city', viewing the cathedral, river Avon & a few punters. Then on to New Regent Street, which contains Spanish architecture in a quaint street, which is the only example in New Zealand where the houses are built to a single style down the same street. This street is known for its architectural style, cafes and specialist shops. We did a quick tour of the Botanical gardens which had an impressive water fountain, and then had a look at the colleges - very similar to Cambridge! Next on to Cathedral junction & then we returned to Cathedral Square - the heart of the city. In the afternoon we made our way to Akaroa harbour, which had amazing views of the surrounding hills, ... read more

Here I am in New Zealand so I have a bit of catching up to do….as last time I think I was in Byron Bay. We left the posh apartment there and traveled up the Gold Coast of Queensland to Brisbane…saw the area called Surfers Paradise….high rise skyline which reminded me of Dubai….. a huge casino and masses of development…definitely not my idea of paradise. We hadn’t a clue where we were going as we drove into Brisbane but on the map I saw South Bank and a Tourist Info sign( Brisbane is on a river)- so we headed for there and amazingly then saw a Rydges Hotel ( we had one in Dubai so I guess it registered with me!!!) -And we were right in the South Bank area with lovely cafes and walkways along ... read more

The road trip with Matt's family continued with a visit to Milford Sound; I wasn't too sure what to expect but knew water was involved as cruises were the big draw and we were booked on one later that day. The journey from Queenstown to Milford began ominously with grey clouds and rain which seemed to worsen the closer we got to our destination. Amazingly this didn't dampen our enthusiasm as the dramatic mountainous scenery we passed en route seemed only to benefit from the downpour as water cascaded through holes in the mountains creating a series of stunning temporary waterfalls. There is only one way in and out of Milford, via a road which leads into the single laned Homer tunnel which goes straight through the mountains. At 1.2km it's long and going through it ... read more

Akaroa, on the Banks Peninsular east of Christchurch, was largely settled by the French and continues to have a French-style feel to it. (The French street names are original but I think the flags are just for the tourists.) The British prevented the French from claiming Akaroa by only 3 days by signing the Treaty of Waitangi with the Maori and posting a warship there to emphasise the contract's legality. Having left good weather on the West, the weather was typically bad and I spent a rainy night talking and playing cards the other residents including three German medical students: Birte, Sebastian and Nillet. Sebastian was from West Berlin and Nillet from East Berlin and I was amazed at the passion each felt when they talked about their differing views of the fall of the ... read more

Having waved farewell to Kaikoura and still having a slightly miffed Jen sitting next to me - I decided a spot of Paua Shell seeking might cheer her up! We stopped in a place called Paia beach which looked to have the perfect conditions for Paua gathering (i had quizzed a lady in the Kaikoura Paua Shell shop - silly billy told me where to find them and how to shine em up!!! Duh! Could she not spot a scrooge!) After about an hour of relative success with bits and pieces of them and an entire live one (jen wouldn't let me keep it though- it went against her 'ethics' pah! after murdering shrimps?!!! It had a really cool shell AND apparently, we could have eaten it!) jen disappeared off round the corner of the ... read more
