Hey Allemaal!

Hi All Hope all's well. We drove from Oamaru to Akaroa, a small town on a lakeside based on the French Riviera (french street names, shops, etc). Our hostel was beautiful, not only did I not have to sleep in a bunk bed, I got a double bed to myself!!! And THEN the next morning I swam with dolphins! I went out on a small boat (in a SMALL wetsuit) and jumped into the sea with the world's smallest dolphin, the Hector Dolphin. They're about 1.5m long and have very distinguised markings. Once you got into the freezing sea you have to make funny noise to get them interested, so I blew down my snorkel and banged some stones together that I'd brought. They came SO close over and were very playful. A lovely day! ... read more

Best week ever! Last weekend (well, I guess two weekends ago) was so amazing. I went to Akaroa on Saturday which is a beautiful town on Banks Peninsula that overlooks a sheltered harbor that is home to dolphin pods and penguins, as well as many other birds that are very beautiful and playful. We hired sea kayaks, which are different from a regular kayak that I am used to, in that you don't steer with your paddle, but rather use foot pedals to move a rudder that steers you. We explored sea caves that looked like they were left over set pieces from Pirates of the Caribbean, got up close and personal with Hector dolphins, the most rare type of dolphin. They swam up and around our kayaks and jumped around in front of us. They ... read more

Once again, i cannot say it often enough.. New Zealand is the best organized country when it comes to tourism. The public transport, the shuttles, the tours, etc, everything is top--notch and so again i am on a bus travelling to Akaroa . Akaroa is about 80 km south of Christchurch, and is one of the very few ocean side towns, where you can feel the french influence in New Zealand. Somtime between Captain Cook's landing in New Zeland and before the Bristish Crown took over, the French tried to colonize New Zealand, and Akaroa still has a bit of that flair. However, my main reason for coming here today was the opportunity to swim with New Zealand's Hektor Dolphins! The Hektor Dolphins are native to New Zealand and are an endangered species with only about ... read more

Today was hands down the coolest day I’ve had since arriving in New Zealand. I’ll probably say that about every weekend from here on in. 5 of us took a day trip out to Akaroa, which is a small harbor town on the Banks Peninsula, just south of Christchurch. It was the only original French settlement in the country and they cling to those roots still today. The cafes all have very French names and the flag flies in many places, but I think it’s more for show and tourism in the town itself. It was a cute town with adorable cottages with these gardens that were overflowing with color. Aside from the town itself, it sits on a harbor that is a deep blue and is surrounded by beautiful hills on all sides. It is ... read more

Our last few days in Australia were spent in Gosford. Stuart’s relations whom we had met up with one night were very kind and gave us the opportunity to stay in their beautiful beach house at McMasters Beach. Stu had never even spoken to Paul and Fiona before so the gesture was extremely generous and greatly appreciated. We eventually found Paul and Fiona’s house and rolled in with the traditional bottle of vino. They were both very nice and their daughter Gina was very cute. Kerry got special dispensation to look at her princess room. We had decided anyway to leave Sydney and head back up the coast as Sydney was just so expensive and our camper park was a dive! So as you can imagine it was amazing when Fiona and Paul hatched a plan ... read more

Our group had an educational trip to the Anarctic Center in Christchurch. It was so cool to have a penguin walk around while we were at the seminar. The arctic storm simulation was terrible! I left Michigan for a reason: to get away from the cold. Julie and I went on a trip to Akaroa. It's about an hour outside of Christchurch. It was settled by the French instead of the English, so it's a unique place to go. We went on a dolphin swimming experience, which it was amazing to swim in the ocean with dolphins two feet away from you. We had a nice relaxing stay at a bed and breakfast. Our hosts were really cool people who had spent the last 10 years in South America. It was a very relaxing place with ... read more

hey! gisteren mijn laatste werkdag gehad.

... read more
