Hi friends! It's been a while, but I am confident that few of you were kept up nights by my online absence. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with loved ones, and that you keep up the fun over the New Year. I've settled in nicely here in Akaroa, spending my days in a rather mundane routine that I am feasting on with the relish of a consistency starved traveller. Monday through Wednesday, I work at the Supply Store which is an anachronistic ye old general store in the age of super-tubs-of-mayonnaise-for-a-dollar bulk shopping. Roger and Coral are pleasant bosses who truly enjoy supplying the town with no more than three of anything you could ever need to eat, drink, fish or do repairs. I work with an interesting cast of characters. First is Roger ... read more

Greetings from Akaroa Adventures! After a few days of travelling from Takaka, Picton and Christchurch, I arrived in Akaroa on Sunday evening. I've signed on as a helper for a small kayak, mountain bike and coffee shop on the main thoroughfare through town. In exchange for three and a half days of relaxed "work" and coffee making, I get my own room, a bed and food. I started my first day today. At noon, I ambled out of the house in the sweaty clothes I had just gone for a run in. I plopped down next to Darin (the owner of Akaroa Adventures) at the picnic table. I read my book for the next few hours, stopping only to give change to a backpacker who needed internet time across the street and to sell a blue ... read more

Left Christchurch sunday morning to check out the coastal region of Akaroa. Beautiful scenery, so stunning it was unspoilt by the arrival of my 1987 Nissan Bluebird Station Wagon. The pictures speak for themselves. Slept in car on way south, then checked out the ancient Moeraki boulders just south of Oamaru. Quite unbelievable. If only I had more time to really investigate these ancient phenomena. But life must go on, no point in dwelling on the past eh.... read more

We have made it to Mount Cook (Akaroa) National Park which is where the Southern Alps and Mount Cook (NZ's highest mountain) are. We arrived yesterday in very wet and grey weather. It was so misty we could not really see any mountains let alone Mount Cook! The rain put a bit of a dampener on our walking plans (we are not he die hard walkers that like to go out in any weather), so we vegged about for most of the afternoon. We did a short walk that took us up to a viewing platform over a lake. The lake had icebergs floating in it which was pretty cool. We had an early start today (I misread the alarm clock by an hour so we were rather early leaving the hostel. Tim does not seem ... read more
