Introduction ... Instead of a Sunday walk this week to get our dose of 'serenity' we did a very pleasant 20 km bike ride from Semaphore to North Haven. The path was very simple, we headed from our place down Hart street to the bike track on the Esplanade foreshore and headed North towards Outer Harbour. If you have bikes, you can catch the train from Adelaide to Glanville station (Outer Harbour line) and head down Semaphore Road and down to the jetty. From here you can join the bike path. A map of the bike path (number 5 in the series) is available. What happened ... The weather was fabulous; overcast, calm, with the temperature peaking only at 27°C. At Semaphore we saw the Gre... read more

We decided that it was way TOO HOT in Alice Springs, so we actually changed our flight to a day earlier and headed to Adelaide. We got there and we could definitley immediately feel the temperature difference, it was amazing!! We spent the night wandering this really cool & cutesy city. It had a great downtown filled with coffee shops, outdoor restaurants & cafes. Our real treat is getting excited about heading to the Barossa Valley for some wine tasting & most importantly a break from the hostels. A couple months ago I found this cute cottage online and reserved it just for this break. We got to the cottage and could not have been any more excited when we saw it. Don't worry, we took plenty of photos...it was absolutely perfect! Two rooms with two ... read more

Not much to write here as we only stayed for one night. We arrived here in the evening from our tour of the Great Ocean Road and checked into our hostel, Cannon Street which was ok, managed to get our own room again. The first thing we noticed about Adelaide was how quiet it was in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne. We went out for some food and considering it was Saturday night there seemed to be noone around. We ended up going for a quiet drink with a nice French couple we had met on our tour. Sunday was no better, Martin was feeling ill all day, fortunately it was a quick 24 hour bug, although he still managed to get to the pub to watch an Arsenal game, typical. So, off we went in ... read more

Hi All. I know you have all been waiting with baited breath to see what we have been doing. 2nd Jan 2006 Well we left Melbourne to spend or first 2 nights in Yambuck near a wind farm. On the way there we stopped at Gelong Botanical Gardens for lunch. We stopped at Campertown for a snooze as we wwere a bit tired and then once we found the van park we went for a walk along the foreshore and the river with the boys. 3rd Nard's parents met us at Yambuck so we spent the day touring around. We went to the Crags which is a rocky outcrop and the volcanic ation had fosilized the tree roots. We went to Tower hill and walked to the top lok out and then around a boardwalk down ... read more

Once I had had a ride back to Alice Springs I just had to board the Ghan again to get to the south coast. Unfotunately the tain is only going once a week and was fully booked. After some fighting with the staff at the train station I still hoped on (a train is never fully booked...). Since some running with all the gear in the desert sun had been involved I was glad for the on-train shower. And a good-hearted Japanese traveler feed me with bread and smoked mussels. I didn't have any food or money... three cheers for the japanese traveler in general. He is usualy friendly, social-minded, and he knows all the good cheapies. In Adelaide I just walked the streets for half a day before I traveled on by Firefly bus to ... read more

Checked into a random hostel which luckily was much nicer than the one in Melbourne. Headed out with Misang, a very sweet girl from Korea who I met on the tour. Got the feeling that I could see all of Adelaide in one day, so was glad I wasn't spending any more time there. We were pretty tired and I could tell walking around that the city has a pretty good night life but I just wasn't up for it. When a random guy popped out of an alley and asked us to get high with him, that was pretty much the cue that it was time to call it a night. Friday Misang had left and I explored with Ying Ying from England. It was hot and humid so for a second I almost felt ... read more

Our onward location was to be Adelaide, with a few stops on the way. A strange occurrence on this leg was crossing the state border where a man took our Onion! The explanation he gave us for this ‘daylight robbery’ was onion rust. Not one local can tell us what the problem with rusty onions could be - the only explanation forthcoming being his lack of ingredients for his dinner (this being corroborated by his second request for Garlic; hmmm). Adelaide - what a nice city! We possibly like it a little more because of its Bristol-esque feel. Beautiful architecture, green places for the people to relax, free things - all good. We liked the provision of free wireless internet at the library which was very useful to update the laptop software and settings. Oh, and ... read more

Planning It has been forecast to be hot in Adelaide today (38 degrees) so we will start out early and visit Hallett Cove Conservation Park. We have done parts of this walk several times before - and it can be a little cool most days, but it is ideal on the mornings of hot days that are reasonably still (wind-wise) and bright (improving contrast between the blue sky and the eroded hills). The reason we like this walk so much is the opportunity to learn more about rocks and geology (which is one of Dan's passions) and it is really amazing - you can see where the glaciers have been by looking at the scratches they left behind in rocks! There are plenty of signs along the path about the geology - so you can ... read more
