Cold, windy and wet. Walking around Adelaide. Cut short. Raining hard. I woke up at 6:45 and couldn't sleep anymore. I guess I'm getting used to all of these early morning wake up calls of the last couple of weeks. I lay in bed ‘til about 8AM waiting for Coles to open up so that I could get some food for breakfast. My roommate Laura also got up and we went over there together. We bumped in to Di on the way there. Laura and I met up with Di and Anna and attempted the walking tour of Adelaide that was listed in the Lonely Planet. We made it to the Art Gallery and the Southern Australian Museum. Both free! We all had packed lunches and since it was raining outside we headed over to the ... read more

Intense red sunrise. Hawker, Quorn & Adelaide. Bye to the Flinders. Another nice sleep in since it was another 8AM departure. Gotta love a good lie-in! Once on the road we did more emu spotting. Our morning stop was at the Klinyara Ruins which is a former settlement from "back in the day." To be honest I wasn't really listening to what Tanya was telling us about this sight... Since we will be arriving in Adelaide tonight and this is our last lunch together we all had left overs for lunch. I opted not to have a sandwich and helped myself to the salads instead. Driving (or in my case, sitting on the bus!) was a pretty easy day today. The group actually seemed pretty subdued. Guess when the two Canadians aren't talking the bus gets ... read more

This was a sneaky walk hiding down the back of Flinders University. You went down some side streets to get to the track. It went steeply down to Sturt river which was flowing. Large rocks and gorges. Looks like the Flinders Ranges. Scramble up hill for view out to sea. Along a horse trail to suburbs and “back to where we started from”.... read more

We went to Onkaparinga for a very hard walk (4 hours) with lots of very steep climbs and descents (what goes up must come down). It was very dry, but at least there was some water and we heard a lone frog. An amazing place. Must go back. Got very high and looked down into gorge, then very steep down hill. Rock hop for about an hour and then up hill again. We were sore for days after this one! Link to more Onkaparinga information ... read more

Sunday morning was again leisurely spent in Adelaide. There's not a lot to do here but I like the city. I went to the South Australia museum. It's the same type like Australian museum in Sydney - combination of nature and Aboriginal art. I was shocked by the human skeleton of Max - see the pictures - even if the guy donated his body to science it means you go and put him in a museum?? However they had one magnificent exhibition of nature & wildlife photographs from some photography contest. They had some amazing photos. I wish I could put some here but of course you are not allowed to takes photos there because of copyright laws. I almost bought the book but it was 60$ and very heavy... it's not a backpacker's book... In ... read more

Traveling in a foreign country for a long times means also learning something about its past and its people. So I went to the migration museum of South Australia here in Adelaide. I saw there a tiny exhibition that is not really relevant to migration, but felt very relevant for me. They "celebrated" here ANZAC day 2 weeks ago, on 25/4. I didn't know that 25/4 was the day the invaded to Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) 90 years ago in World War 1, with British and French forces. This was a horrible battle, lasting many months, with heavy losses on both sides (about 90,000 Turks and 44,000 allies). The exhibition was called "Gallipoli - A Turkish view". It shows the other side of the war. In those days the Turks were the enemy. For me ... read more

There is a big joke in Australia for people who live outside Adelaide. Adelaide is a sterile, boring place. Well it just so happens that my cousin, Tracey, lives in Adelaide and, of course, protests these claims. She invited us to go there and see that it isn't as hackneyed as everyone makes out. My brother Az and I set off for Adelaide on 22nd April. Once we arrived, I was actually a little concerned if I would even recognise my cousin. (I hadn't actually seen her for 18 years) But we both seem to recognise each other and it was all good. Tracey started, straight away, to make Adelaide as exciting as possible. She pointed to the right out of the car and said "Over there is a good place to go out and is ... read more
