So...I arrived at the Thebarton Theatre not sure what to expect and found a treasure of a venue only a ten minute bus ride from my flat. The theatre was built in 1926 and regardless of many years of renovation, I could picture early Aussie theatre goers and high society piling into the place for a big night on the town. The place actually really reminded me of The El Rey in L.A. Opening for Gomez was Paul Dempsey, the lead singer of Something For Kate, a Melbourne band I have yet to give a listen to. I only caught a few of Dempsey's tunes but was very impressed with him. Perceptive lyrical twists, aching vocals, a dirty guitar backed by a masculine melody,mmm.
