I slept great! I didn’t go to bed too early but I got enough sleep to have a good night’s sleep. There is no escape today. The mercury is set to hit 40 degrees all over SA and the Fire Brigade is on high alert to battle any fires that might get started. Gordon and Pam call today ‘Hibernation’ as Saturday is the only time they get to rest and relax. They do have a few tasks at hand today to take care of (including me I suppose! I could have left really early this morning but it’s so DAMN hot) and then Karen realises she can’t look after her kids today so Gordon has to go over and pick them up-while she’s auditioning for Big Brother. “This is what retirement is all about.” Somehow you ... read more

My hands were a little black from the grease and other associated fluids from pulling out a radiator from a Datsun 200B for Karen (Gordon’s daughter). It was only 10am and already the sun was pounding down some awful heat on us. Gordon popped out his head from under the car and asked, “Are you a little dirty there, John? I bet you arts students never get your hands dirty!” “This is what retirement is all about” After finding a radiator that we wanted, a side steel fitting of the radiator just didn’t want to hold on so we had to try and weld it on. We probably could have just left it out in the sun to bake and that would have nearly done the trick. We’re trying our best to weld it on but ... read more

After lights out (this morning-I spent a bit longer than the standard ten minutes packing!), I looked out onto Victoria St and more tears had poured from the sky. I was also carrying an extra bag today with my technology and all. Totally hand luggage, as my Rip Curl bag was big enough to be checked in! Even though it had some important things in there, it made moving around a lot more easier. The bus to Adelaide is late and I’m listening to talkback radio at the moment. One of the topics is Hydroponic VS Field Tomatoes. It reminded me that I was still in a Fruit Fly Free zone and even though we were in a drought, this area is generally a harvest area. Another topic of discussion is the proposed toxic dump ... read more

Day One - November 30, 2002: Adelaide - Sydney - Bangkok I stayed up until 2:30am, packing my bags, on the Friday night before we left and only got four hours sleep. But I was so nervous about my first overseas trip that I wouldn’t have been able to sleep anyway. On the way to the airport it seemed I was not the only nervous one as Dad was driving through red lights on the way there and didn’t realise until we said something. Mum, Dad and Tammie saw me off at the airport, although our first hitch came quickly with Tony being unexpectedly bumped to an earlier flight without me. At least the flight to Sydney was almost empty and was a pretty easy trip and I felt the need to knock back some beer ... read more

A while back, at the hostel, I met someone who was travelling around Australia following a similar route to me on a bus pass. Rather than being time limited, like the one I had to get down from Darwin, this allowed you to take as long as you liked, with as many stops as you liked on a specified route. It was also dirt-cheap (considering the distances involved) and make things even better, there was a $120 discount for holders of Student Union cards, and mine was still valid even though I'd long since finished at Brighton! Mike and I had very different ideas as to what we wanted to do in Australia, so we decided that we would split up and go our separate ways. We would, obviously, meet up again for the flight to ... read more

There was a great crowd on the bus south, except for the fact that the Japanese guy beside me had a bit of a personal hygiene problem. Luckily, he got off the bus at 2.00am literally in the middle of nowhere, which had the added bonus that I had two seats and was able to lie down to sleep. After a while travelling on the buses, you learn that they tend to fill the bus from the front, so if you ask for a seat at the back, there is a good chance that you will get two seats and hence a more comfortable night's sleep. No matter how comfortable it may be, getting a good night's sleep on a single seat is not easy. Once the bus starts moving, people from the front will check ... read more
