The trip officially started this morning when I put on the first pair of the 5 underpants I have packed for the next 3 months, ah the joys of backpacking. Fortunately we had most of our emotional goodbyes over the last few days (I´m going to miss pale ale, huuumph, I promised myself I wouldnt cry) and today was more fun, courteous to Suse and Judes who took us to Adelaide´s shiny new airport to catch our flight to Melbourne. Let the Journey Begin... in Melbourne for a night with Sam and conveniently a night of Commonwealth Games Festivities. ... read more

22 Mar - Adelaide for the last time this trip We were welcomed by our gracious Adelaide host family (Frank, Francis & Liam) once again. Today Leanne went to pick up the car from the repair depot and I took the day to scoot back to Sydney very briefly to carefully consider some important work and career affecting decisions in a brief meeting with my department manager. (News of future developments will be forthcoming as events unfold). Back in Adelaide, it was appropriate for us to cook the Andrews family dinner after they fostered two transient travellers and stored the entire contents of our car in their back room for two weeks. Frank and Francis, we cannot thank you guys enough! Thursday 23-Mar, we re-packed the car with all of our gear and headed for the ... read more

After a lot of indecision I have finally chosen the destination of my next adventure. I chose this region of the world for a number of reasons the first being the shining review it got from Arthur a Melbourne lad I met in Cappadocia (Turkey) a few years ago. The second because war is a disaster when it comes to preserving a nations historical sites (Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq showed the world this) and this region is likely to become even more of a hotspot in the months to come, so I wanted to get in before the American or Israeli bombs. In seven weeks I plan to experience the best the Persian Gulf has to offer visiting UAE, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and ofcourse Iran. Saudi is out as it is the most difficult ... read more

Spruiked yesterday, Sunday, to good effect in Rundle St. This morning did Radio Adelaide interview. Went in to studio to get face to face with interviewer. Much better than mobile phone. Adelaide's been great. Nice city. Lots of parks. Streets change names a lot though. And here a Perth midi of beer is called a schooner and an Adelaide pint is a Sydney schooner. Got it? It's also taken me ten days to get my bearings since Adelaide is situated on a north/south axis and Perth is east/west. Thanks Adelaide for your support. I head for Melbourne.... read more

Well, I finally crossed a state border... crossing the ACT/NSW one doesnt count when u LIVE on the border. And going to Victoria just doesnt count... well, I dont think so anyway! lol! So anyway, after sleeping in and having my brother in law drive back to his place to call me so that i'd wake up and get ready, we finally hit the canberra airport and i still had plenty of time. I managed to get myself towards the back of the plane... but as close to the front i could get (i love being near the front of the plane!) I went with Qantas on the really early morning fligth and it was great.. i watched a small documentaries on penguins and then a weird show on how this kid loved aussie rules (wat ... read more

Drove early towards hills to the east. Couldn't get the view of Adelaide I knew was there. Two cyclists Went ahead and positioned themselves at intersections to wave me in the right direction. Got to top. Great aerial view of the whole urban area. It was 700 meters high and 13 degrees. Clouds low. Cyclists arrived. Rain eventually came. Went down to city plain and warmth. Found City Markets I had heard about. Bustling. Good sticker interest. Whole thing felt like Istanbul bazaar. Radio interview set for Monday 8:30 AM Radio Adelaide. Got email from Advertiser journo but no interview for story.... read more

Weather cool and partly cloudy. Sailed on 50 footer last night at CYCSA. Very nice. Spruiked today. Still no call from journo from "Advertiser". Did meet a guy from Adelaide radio who says he'll call tomorrow to set up interview. Don't want to leave Adelaide without media moment. Tomorrow St Patricks Day so there there should be a lot of republicans about. Looking like departure for Melbourne on Sunday.... read more

Went to "Advertiser" to try for story. Called from front desk but not interested. Thought that strange for newspaper. Stood out front. Flurry of interest from journos. One wrote for "The Australian" Weekend Magazine! That's the top of the food chain. He had his photographer take some shots. Gave him my mobile number. The other journo wrote for the "Tizer". Otherwise the day was warm and sunny. Wandered streets. Still disoriented in new town. Its a pleasant place old Adelaide. Not booming like Perth. I can't help but think of those vast open spaces of the Nullarbor. Then here this busy little spot amid arid open spaces, a world of humans buzzing in their nest. Also got email from Albany WA "Albany Advertiser" saying she had done the story. Unfortunately I couldn't get the article but ... read more

Well Adelaide, mmm it’s sort of like something but not sure what. The backpacker place we stayed in was, well, very backpackery, bit like being left to superivse your kids 15th birthday party, when they don’t like half the people they’ve invited. Quite grubby - (for those of you smarting from the Davis hotel pics you’ll love these) although loos and showers clean. Now for some reason the loo and shower were side by side just off the hallway, but with no door leading into them. More often than not when I went to have a shower someone would always go to the loo, not sure why they didn’t just put he loo’s together and the shower seperately. Anyway the weather has been good, the people civil, think that is it, - everything works bus stops ... read more
