Agnes Water / Town of 1770 04 Nov (g) Arrived at the town of 1770 (so called because Captain Cook landed here and created a settlement due to his ship requiring repairs) yesterday evening at sunset after a seven hour drive up from the Gold Coast. Quickly pitched the tent and witnessed the most gorgeous sunset across the bay right outside our tent (see piccies) Our pitch is right on the beach and the view is really quite something, although the ameneties are a little more basic than before. Both fell asleep to the sound of the waves lapping up on the shore. Woke early today and drove down to the small harbour to catch a diving trip out to the southern end of the Barrier Reef at Hoskyns Island (Paul dove with the group as ... read more

Lazy start to the day and then just did some local exploring. The area is being pushed as being the next Noosa. There are some super new places but current house prices are already close to Noosa. ... read more

A trip of about 120 Km today to 1770. The unusual name is related to the year that Captain James Cook first set foot in Queensland - May 24, 1770. Stopped briefly at Miriam Vale on the way here. Walked to the beach this afternoon, a pleasant stroll of 900 m through the bush.... read more

I spent the better part of my last afternoon on Magnetic Island at the Koala Sanctuary as I had heard that this was a great opportunity to get to hold a koala (for a fairly pretty penny of course) and to get my photo taken with a cuddly koala among other native Australian animals - python, birds, lizards, baby croc, etc. If you actually want to see koalas in the wild while in Australia, your best bet is to hike along one of the many hiking paths on Magnetic Island - I however did not see any but I didn't do a great deal of hiking either. Magnetic Island was great - I'm very glad I stayed there for 3 nights. The hostel was right on the beach; public transport on the island was very convenient; ... read more

After 3 non-stop days on Fraser Island I decided on the town of 1770/Agnes Water. It is about 4 hours north of Hervey Bay and only 2000 people live in both towns. I came with no plans besides just hanging out, doing some laundry and maybe some surfing. The hostel was absolutely amazing set right in the middle of a residential neighborhood. After lounging the first night, I decided on a surfing lesson in the morning. It only cost $16.50 for a 4 hour lesson. Most have been costing about 45 so I've passed on all of them. The lesson was pretty piss poor, but once I got in the water it was worth the money. Pretty small waves, but just fine for me. They also offered cheap rentals so I went back the next day ... read more

Blimey... There's an awful lot to write now; Surfers Paradise was cool. Loved it there. Lots of Billabong and Quicksilver Warehouse outlets; with plenty of jobs going in those places too. Might have to remember to pop back down there if I cant find anything else. Stayed in a slightly dodgy hostel. Me and Luis ended up in a room with 3 girls from Ireland. Now, you all know how much I love the Irish accent; so yeah, I was a happy bunny. The night we arrived we went out to find somewhere for dinner and ended up in some dodgy local pub that was having a Trivia night. The locals however were friendly enough. Once dinner was done went for a wander around and found a cool little beach side amusement park with some cool ... read more

Okay, I've started writing our travel blog again.......and should offer a quick explanation of where we've been for the last year, what with it being more than 1 year since the publication of our last blog!! We'd gotten as far as Darwin when I last wrote. Between June 2nd and June 20th 2006 we travelled from Darwin into the middle of the country and over to Cairns on the east coast. This took no time at all but we crammed a lot in, far too much to put in this 'catch-up' session. I have written most of those 3 weeks up already and will publish them soon, but to bring you up to speed I thought this was the best way! Bear with me......it WILL make sense I promise...... Following a nice trip up the coast ... read more

1770= town to do things without a license. Went on a joy flight and got to drive the plane..was so much fun. Experienced zero gravity, was bizarre seeing our camera cases, sick bags (empty) and everything floating in the air. Saw dolphins before landing on a beach where we ate fresh oysters which we knocked off the rocks. Was amazing. Have taken videos with my camera. If im sounding all action and confident about being in the plane then dont be fooled. The videos show the reality and the pilot took a copy of them because he's never had a passenger scream so much. Wait till you see them.... Then can you imagine- a medical emergency meant I had to drive a hunk of junk to the doctors today for a sick friend ( she's ... read more

The overnight bus to Town 1770 wasn't too bad & I think because it had been such a long day hanging around that we were shattered & managed to get some sleep. It was quite a relaxed atmosphere at 1770, (named after the year Captain James Cook discovered it), & not as commercial as Airlie or Cairns which was a refreshing change. On Friday we had a lazy day, we did a tour that the hostel provided free of charge, driving round the two small towns & highlighting the activities & things we could see & do during our stay. We had some lunch & a lazy afternoon lying in hammocks, reading our books & nosing around town, it was nice & relaxing. We had a bit of wine & a civilised evening. On Saturday morning ... read more

Named after the year James Cook first stepped onto Australian land, actually in Town 1770 on 24th May 1770 this town is one of if not the least commercial places you can visit on the East coast. It hardly has any tourists and the only people that seem to come here are us backpackers. Compared to the rest of the East coast, 1770 is extremely cheap for activities. For example surfing is 7 times more expensive in Bondi. At 11am we went on the free tour provided by scooterroo, this is a drive around town 1770 and the area we stayed in called Agnes Waters. We also were informed of what activities we could do whilst we are here. The rest of our day was spent relaxing as we were quite tired from the day ... read more
