After a long sleepless journey from Airlie Beach i arrived in Town of 1770 or Agnes Water as its also known at 10am, although i just wanted to sleep i didn't have much time to rest because after checking in i had to get ready to go sea kayaking, this was advertised as a dolphin/turtle spotting sea kayaking adventure ending with a sunset on the beach and unfortunately i didn't see and dolphins or turtles and the weather wasn't great so there was no sunset but the kayaking was really fun and we stopped at various beaches which would be very hard to get to by land and our guide explained that the town got its name in 1970 to commemorate the bicentennial of Captain Cook landing there in 1770 which was the second place he ... read more

It was ironic that as soon as we arrived back in Hervey Bay the weather cleared up. In fact we were woken up by the sun shining through the gaps in our curtains, making the air in the van feel hot and dense even at 7am. It felt good to be able to get the aircon on and go back to sleep, knowing that we didn’t have to be anywhere. We set off just before check out time at 10am, with the intention of driving straight to our next destination, Town of 1770. On the way, however, we got lured into visiting a lovely little stretch of beach called Woodgate Bay. First we visited it via a track through the bush. The road was unsealed (and this time our van wasn’t insured to drive on dirt ... read more

YEPPOON_KINKA BEACH The trip to Yeppoon was about 360 km. We seem to be improving in our pack-up times because we were on the road by 8.00am and in the park set up for lunch by about 1.30pm. The trip takes you almost to Rockhampton and then out to the coast for roughly 45km. The park was small and just ok but we were put in the middle of the permanents. I don't think they really liked the intrusion! With its reputation as a tourist destination for the Japanese and a port for prawn trawlers, we thought it would be a nice destination. Not entirely so! However, there were all the essential services in the local shopping centre and we did find a really nice restaurant at Rosslyn Bay overlooking the water. The charters go out ... read more

July 29 and we have been on the road for almost 6 months! Australia is a very big place indeed! We set off early from Rainbow Beach so we could get to Tin Can Bay in time for the 8 o’clock dolphin feeding. Sounds touristy doesn’t it - but actually it was very low key. Mystique came in first then her daughter Harmony about half an hour later. It’s a good place to see the dolphins up close, they come in regularly most mornings to the jetty and local volunteers supervise the feeding, which you can do for a gold coin donation. These were humpback dolphins which we had not seen before. Tin Can Bay was also a good place to buy fresh seafood at a reasonable price - we have been surprised how expensive fresh ... read more

After leaving Noosa for the last time we had to make some miles, so it was just an afternoon of driving, but through stunning scenery. We headed for Rainbow Beach, and it was dark by the time we arrived, but we had read that there was a great NP camping area (therefore cheap) right on Inskip Point in the sand dunes. It was the closet mainland point to Fraser Island, and the closet Stu would go to the Fraser Island experience. It was really secluded, and we were able to pull the van right up to the dunes and be just metres away from the gnarly sea front. The only problem was that we couldn’t find the toilets as it was so dark…..oh well….he would defo have a Fraser Island experience later! It would teach the ... read more

Ok, wow. I have spent the past few days here in Newcastle at Rachelle and Dean's place...I know Rachelle from Uni back in Victoria, her mother is also a school teacher, and her husband Dean and her are out here in Australia while Dean finishes uni to become a Physiotherapist. I have spent all afternoon here at his uni on the free computers getting mad at my blog, trying to figure out how to upload heaps of photos, and having the program crash on me a few too many times... So, I've decided to leave it be and stick to updating text...you'll get pics one of these days! Promise! Now, where were we...I believe we just took an overnight bus trip to the town of 1770/Agnes Water...many of the travelers' we met along the coast were ... read more

We left Rainbow Beach, and motored on up the coast, arriving at a very laid back and thankfully rain-free little coastal hamlet with the bizarre name of 'Town of 1770', a bit north of Bundaberg. Apparently, it was renamed in 1936 in honour of James Cook's landing there on 24th May 1770, on 'Bustard Beach' so named by Cook after he and his crew feasted on a Bustard caught there (Steve had a history lesson from the very enthusiastic campsite manager every time he went to the kiosk...) This is the first 'real' stylie campsite we've had the good fortune to find. It's pretty basic, none of the bells and whistles of the Big 4 parks with the prices to match, but it's got that 'back to nature' feel about it - the sound of the ... read more

On the 7/1 we stopped of in a little known place named 1770 (the only place in the world to have numbers for its name - so we're told), and what a find it was! We stopped off to take a trip to the reef but it had so much more to offer. After booking in we were taken on a free trip of the area by a crazy South African guy allowing us to learn a little about the area. We actually stayed in the neighbouring town of Agnes Waters as 1770 doesn't really have much accommodation. We were taken to a cliff area overlooking the bay of 1770, it was an unbelievable sight, a blue river leading onto a pristine white beach and turquoise sea. We parked up by two shacks, and they WERE ... read more

After leaving Airlie Beach we made our way down to Agnes Water and the Town of 1770, which we had wanted to check out the last time we were in Oz, but never quite made it up that far. They are both cool little off the beaten track towns, that by the sounds of it may not stay that way for to much longer with development heading it's way... The Town of 1770 was Captain Cook's first landing spot in Queensland, and is also the last surfable spot up the east coast. We didn't end up surfing, but spent 2 days checking things out, chilling at the pool and getting eaten alive by sand flies. Or at least some of us; not sure what Brett is doing diferently than the rest of us, but he's the ... read more

Jetted off to Oz to visit the parents and decided to get married while we were out there. Rod fancied the Town of 1770 just because he wanted to have number instead of a name in the location on the wedding certificate. Stayed in a balinese style house which had absolutely fantastic views and the wedding was very relaxed as it was only us, the celebrant, her husband and friend, who were our witnessess. Needless to say we were running a little behind as when they turned up, I was in my underwear and Rod still in the shower. I told them to help themselves to beer in the fridge but turns out they had already found them! Several beers later and all the paperwork signed (although I nearly married the witness because he was a ... read more
