G'day I know this blog comes fast on the heels of the last one but we're moving up the coast pretty quickly at the moment so I thought it'd be better to do shorter blogs more frequently than one big huge one when I'll have forgotten half the stuff I've done! The day after the pirates party in Rainbow Beach we revelled in the fact that we had absolutely nothing to do other than nurse our hangovers and cringe about our behaviour the night before (I don't know where my compulsion to do cartwheels comes from when I'm drunk!) The following day we caught the bus to 1770, a few hours north. We weren't sure what to expect from this as we hadn't heard much about it other than some reports from fellow travellers who said ... read more

1770 was next on the hit list and so after packing up and moving on from our Fraser adventure, me and the girls were thinking that some downtime was called for in 1770. Turns out it's actually quite a little fun packed place and looking back we really should have booked to stay here a bit longer... The Town Of 1770 is a picturesque seaside village surrounded on three sides by the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay. Historic as the second landing site of Lieutenant James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour in May 1770, the area is rich in wildlife and natural beauty and offers scenic vistas in every direction. It's a very non-commercial town with a very small, if not non-existant crime rate which was nice to know upon our arrival at ... read more

This is one of my favourite places I have visited, it is amazing! A lot of people miss the places out, it only has 120 beds for backpackers. The town itself is tiny: 1770 has a population of 80 and Agnes Waters of 2000. There is so much to do here, and its all really cheap as it is so uncommercial. We arrived late about 6 in the evening, stayed for 2 nights getting the night bus to Airlie Beach....an adventure in itself being dropped at an unlit 'bus stop' gravelled area with the bus driver making wolf creek jokes until the coach arrived! We recieved a free tour of the town in the morning, which was good but it seemed like other pretty towns we had seen! but then that aftrenoon, we got to ... read more

Here is some interesting information about 1770 - this town is the only one in Australia to have a number for its name. This is the spot where the famous explorer, Captain James Cook, sailed into Bustard Bay back in 1770. As far as i know, it's not even really a town, but a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. Again, like most places in Australia, it's really, really beautiful. We arrived in Agnes Water (these two town are super close to each other) to find out there was some kind of mysterious "incident" and therefore no beds at the hostel i was supposed to stay at (Cool Bananas). We ended up at 1770 Southern Cross which is more of a tourist resort than a backpackers hostel, but lovely all the same. (I've been ... read more

Well we survived Fraser Island and had a awesome time in the process. When we first arrived at the backpackers in Hervey Bay we were a little anxious but excited. All the people around seemed to be guys so I started to worry about being the only girl amongst a bunch of adrenaline hyped guys. But luckily right at the last minute a load of girls turned up to me relief. We were all put in groups of 10-12 and our group seemed to be the best with 3 couples, 2 single guys and 2 single girls- all who were a great laugh but still sensible. After a long safety talk we all headed to the shops to buy our food and alcohol for the 3 days that we were to be on the Island. This ... read more

Having thoroughly enjoyed the joys of the Whitsundays it was time to go budget for a night or two in order to eek out the funds. So we find ourselves in Cape Hillsborough national park campground just North of Mackay. This turned out to be a cracking little spot right on the beach. The one draw back with these cheap and cheerful campsites is that they attract a random set of customers. Quite often these include lone middle-aged men with no apparent reason to be camping. This night proved to be no exception with one such character telling us about a black snake he'd seen that he had attempted to throw stones at, we naturally backed away smiling and made sure that the van doors were locked that night. Cracked on the next day, bypassing Mackay, ... read more

The town of 1770 was invented in 1770, and since then, nothing has happened. There are two hostels, a few beaches and about 6 shops. Today a number of things started to go wrong on the Mattatour, and these shall be listed below. 1) It was raining. Lots. 2) There was nothing to do apart from a motorbike tour thing so we booked on that. 3) The only internet shop was stupid expensive but we needed to go on, so that was annoying. 4) Everywhere in 1770 shuts for lunch at half one. The only place that didn't was up a big hill, so to get there before 2 we had to run. It was raining, we were in flip flops and it was humid. Lunch was pretty good though. 5) On returning to the hostel, ... read more

It's absolutely roasting here but have actually got a little bit of a tan through all the factor 30 I've been smothering my white Scottish skin in so at least I don't completely stand out a mile anymore! Went to see loggerhead turtles nesting on a conservation beach near Bundaberg about 5 hours north of Brisbane on Tuesday night. Was an amazing thing to see, definitely a unique experience. Would only have been better if I'd had the beach to myself instead of sharing it with about 40 other people! Managed not to get eaten alive by mosquitoes too, just as well too as my legs already have their fair share of bites & mine go into nice red lumps about twice the size of anyone elses (as katie & my mum will know!) We had ... read more

07/12/06 Town of 1770 6 or 700 km later. Dunno. Lost count. Drove through the beef capital of Australia, Rockhampton. Spotted at least one cattle truck at the traffic lights in town, with mournful looking cows with large floppy ears looking out over the traffic. Large concrete cows stand proudly on the center of roundabouts on the main roads in and out of town (depends which way you are heading I guess), welcoming you with the fact that there are 2 squillion cows within a 250k radius of the town and supposedly a multitude of great steak restaurants. Despite that mouth-watering prospect, we rocked on through and straight through the heavily industrial-looking town of Gladstone, not seeing anything that convinced us to stay! We finally ran out of daylight and any further aptitude for driving at ... read more

Hi, You join me at the town of Agnes Water, just outside 1770 - the first place in Queensland to be stopped at by Captain Cook upon discovering Australia. 1770 itself is home to about 80 permanent residents and about 120 houses. It is very beatiful, but very small. Agnes Water is slightly bigger, set on a main road with a post office, petrol station, bakery and mini market etc. So, the last big thing we've done since i last wrote is Fraser Island! We caught a ferry accross and about 30 of us bundled onto a 4 wheel drive with a crazy driver called Rob. The beginning of the trip was immense fun as the island is purely made of sand so the roads are quite hairy in places!! Tres bumpy. On the first day ... read more
