Charters Towers was a charming town and perfect for a two day stop to finish off school work, find the next Harry Potter book for Sam (he is devouring the series and is often glued to his chair for hours, ploughing through the chapters). We decided to head to Paluma National Park, north of Townsville, for a dose of tropical forests and quiet camping (except the birds who seemed to be nocturnal at this spot!) We were camped near some Canadian birdwatchers and as soon as Jojo saw them he dug out our binoculars and started following them. “Can I go hunting with them Mama?” he asked. Sam impressed them with his encyclopedic description of the local wildlife. He is able to speak on so many topics with such authority that he could convince the ... read more

Left Brisbane after sorting out everything for the rest of the trip and running around and around the city trying to track down a copy of the police report. Getting pretty sick of having to do boring stuff like go the police and argue with the car hire company. Had a really good night out in Bris and we're enjoying being in the more sociable hostels rather than in the cold campsites with old people. Glad to leave the city (when we eventually managed to get out the one way system!) and be driving on the dead straight roads that we're used to. Drove to Noosa via the Glass House Mountains which were pretty stunning. Noosa has made it onto my list of places I like in Australia behind Sydney and Brisbane. It's an upmarket beach ... read more

16th June After 2 camping trips in a week, we feel like we could do with a holiday - isn't that the whole point of this trip though? As a result, today was pretty lazy and even though we had a voucher for an hours free kayaking we just didn't bother. We have already done plenty of canoeing in Noosa anyway! A 4 hour ride on the Greyhound got us to the town of 1770/Agnes Waters, an area that has only recently started attracting tourists so is pretty small and quiet. Our hostel was one of the best we have seen so far because it is only a year old, so is clean and well staffed. Spent an evening in the bar eating cheap backpacker meals and drinking jugs of beer, having a well earned rest. ... read more

After our hectic time on Fraser we decided that we needed to relax for a few days so we decided to make our way to 1770. It's a really small town and is really relaxing. Of course it rained on our first day which was a bit annoying but am slowly getting used to it! The next day the sun came out, yippee! So we decided to try and learn to surf. It was the cheapest surfing we had seen and I must say you get what you pay for! Our 'coach' was this fat, old, typical Australian guy. He spent about an hour talking rubbish about surfing, including going on and on about not to surf in a certain place and saying about how he surfed for 20 years on the Gold Coast. It was ... read more

Hello! So after spending about 6 days in Byron (a little too long) we headed up to Surfer's Paradise in our group of 15, stayed in a really nice hostel spent a few days chilling out on the beach then upto Brisbane. Spent just 2 nights in Brisbane, nice city but not much to do and we needed to get a move on and get up the coast, it's a hell of a long way! Me and Sam left the others in Brisbane as they are all staying there for a while to find work. Spent a couple of nights in Noosa from which we did Australia (Steve Irwin) Zoo. Was pretty cool, saw lots of crocs, kangeroos and koalas amongst others. Shame he wasn't there to do his crocodile show tho, i always thoght he ... read more

The next few days after the Tablelands can really be summed up as driving punctuated by interesting little towns. After Kurrimine Beach we continued south stopping in Mission Beach to take photos, in Ingham to buy Piña Colada ingredients and Taylor's Beach to drink our Piña Coladas. Taylor's Beach was really just a caravan park, so we grabbed our lawn chairs and supplies gathered in Ingham and headed for the beach. We also took our coconuts we picked up in Daintree as authentic Piña Colada cannisters. We sat and enjoyed the view and the drinks until the wall of mossies chased us back to Janis. We spent the rest of the night in Taylor's hiding from the mossies and cooking in Janis. The next day we really just drove. We looked for cool beach spots to ... read more

The east coast is a bit more disjointed than New Zealand. I can go days on end without doing much of note. Fraser Island, however, is one of the things to note. I signed up to do a 4X4 expedition on this spit of sand, just off the east coast of Oz. I would be out for three days and two nights camping and covering the best places the island. The day before we left we were put into a team, did the whole meet and greet thing and went to do our food shop. It was then i knew it would be a testing few days. Our food shop would have covered a large regiment for a year. I did point this out but they knew better. That night i got drunk with a few ... read more

Cheryl took us for a walk up Bald Hill which is the highest granite rock in Australia -and we walked straight up it! She galloped ahead like a mountain goat and I grizzled and moaned all the way up - Barry having to pull me most of the way ‘cos I thought I was going to topple over backwards and kill myself. Glen Innes has its own Standing Stones and British Airways have even donated one of them! 4 Feb Left Glen Innes to start going North. Spent the night at Mullumbimby - at a rugby stadium. The shower block smelt of hot sweaty men! Lovely river where our neighbours were catching huge mud crabs. 5 Feb Headed north to Brisbane - lovely city but the car parks are all underground with a max height of ... read more

Cairns We finally arrived in Cairns after a long flight to Brisbane then a connecting flight which totalled around 12 hours, wasn't too bad though the plane was pretty snazzy had our own tv's and supper and breakfast which i didn't expect.. When we got off the plane it was fucking hot the only way i can explain it is it's like when you go in the bathroom after someone's had a really hot shower and the steam hits you!! After collecting luggage we headed for the car rental places and picked up a Toyota Corolla with air con and everything :) nice new car taking no chances this time ha ha, haven't thought of a name for it yet though?? So we got in the car and realised we have no road maps of Australia ... read more
