Hot and sticky day. I hate the humidity. But I love air-con! Okay, so I'm not really the Queen of Queens...just didn't know what to add for a title. lol I can’t believe that it is my last day here in NYC! It's been really nice seeing Maria and her parents and uncle after 15 years! It was also nice to finally meet Maria's husband Eric. They'll be celebrating 10 years of marriage this coming November. Man just another example of how time flies. This'll be a short one. Just thought I'd write a short entry detailing some of the highlights of my last six days here in New York. I love this place. Mind you I've never been here for the long term so that might be a little different. lol Here are some of ... read more

As everyone in America not living in a cave is probably aware, Hurricane Katrina arrived on the doorstep of New Orleans on August 29, 2005. The crazy luck is that if Katrina had arrived 24 hours later than she did, we would have already been well on our way to our trip around the world. Instead, because of the capricious winds of fate, we became evacuees (or refugees, or whatever politically-incorrect name you want to give it). Here's our story... As Shan and I toiled at our final week of work, we were aware that a storm was churning in the Gulf, but at that time it was supposed to hook hard after crossing over Florida and boomerang back into Florida a second time. Friday night Shan and I celebrated our newfound employment status (or lack ... read more

Guys! I love New York!! have spent a week here since camp finished and its so cool! been doing all the touristy stuff - statue of liberty, ground zero and the empire state building - the view was amazing! the people here are really cool as well - friendly and helpful. its definitely good to have an accent in america!! have mastered the subway - its not really that hard! and its funny to watch the locals get worried when they tell you that you're on the train heading to Queens instead of the one heading to '79th st b/w amsterdam and broadway' haha!! i wasnt fazed at all, but they were!!! also checked out a few museums - the Museum of Natural History - I saw the dinosaurs, yay!! and the metropolitian museum of Art ... read more

With a couple interviews scheduled for Thursday, today was more of a catch up day for the family and I. I installed a really cool curvy shower rod that gives me 3 feet of more room in my shower. I also installed two new faucets in the kitchen for my mother. God, she was happy...I've never been much of a plumber, but we all think I did a pretty good job. I got a little help from Riley, who happens to be pretty handy with a wrench! I had a couple problems with my deposit for my class in Prague. My bank won't authorize payment because its from a different country. I will have to wire the funds over to Prague tomorrow. What a hassle... ... read more

Hey everyone. How long has it been? Quite awhile and we have done so much, so this will probably be a lengthy blog. So here it goes: After we left Bellingham we found our way to Mt. Rainier. What a beautiful place. We stayed on the Sunrise side and stayed for 3 days. The first day we hiked 9 miles and did some ridge running. That was fun. It was very hard hiking, but fun. The next day we hiked to the summit of Dege Peak which was only 4.2 miles and an easy hike. We then left the Sunrise side and headed to Ellensburg, WA. The Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute is located there with Washoe and her friends so I had to go. It was absolutely amazing! We sat through a lecture and then ... read more

Lexington to Roanoake We set off on Bike Route 76 towards Roanoake and promptly got lost again, 10 miles later we got back onto our route after a brief detour through some very picturesque (and poor) parts of Virginia. We were chased by dogs at one point, I took off up the road as fast as I could pedal, Vernon just rode along with barking dogs around him, they weren't vicious (probably just wanted some toes to lick). After lunch the weather deteriorated and we had to use our waterproofs, in the current temperatures it's a toss up between how wet you get from the rain and how damp you get sweating in a plastic coat; although the Goretex does seem to work fairly well. We reached Roanoke around 6pm after 58 miles of pedaling and ... read more

Very quick recap over last few weeks- *Nashville.........I admit it, I like a little bluegrass *New Orleans..........Can't belive the images on TV after just visiting there, very sad. *Memphis..............Graceland.....yeaahhh (imagine being said by the boss from Office Space).....uummm.....(ok, back to my own voice)....cool to see, but the whole time I'm thinking, "Maybe they need to put the King away for a little while." *Chicago (with my dad)......Wrigley Field, enough said. *Notre Dame.............Touchdown Jesus inspried me. Great campus. *New York................second home *Week long, buddhist retreat in Barre, Mass. ..............life changing, the silence almost scared me away. Amazing experience. So we'll see how this online journal goes... it's a little different than anything I've done before but hopefully it will help keep friends and family updated. Hopefully I'll get some pictures up pretty quick, too. There's only a week left before I fly out, and I feel like there should be another month- because I'm not ready! I didn't realize how much there is to take care of, but between foreign currency, student loans and searching for somewhere to live when I come back (!), time is running short! So hopefully all the packing gets done on time along with the numerous other random things I need to accomplish. It has been terrific to see everyone at school, though, before I leave. I have to say that I will definitely miss UoP more than I ... read more
