I organized a potluck/kayak outing with my vegetarian group. The moon was supposed to be full and beautiful. There is a regular full moon kayak organized by the local rowing club that is supposed to go from the city dock on Town Lake. I showed up at 7:10 pm and I didn't see any of my friends on the dock. I thought for sure this would be a popular event. It was a perfect night, perfect weather to howl at the moon a few times. I was feeling rather dejected that no one showed up, but then I wound up on a totally different adventure in true Austin style. I was sitting on the dock with my Thai rice noodles and feeling rather discouraged by the veg group when a woman came up to me and ... read more

Grace, Cory, my parents and I made a quick trip to Austin to visit some old friends (Doug and Rebekah) and to attend the Kansas-Texas basketball game. We had great time in a wonderful town (except for KU getting their asses kicked in the game). Also got to visit the Austin Museum of Art. They had a neat Christo/Jeanne-Claude exhibit that Grace really enjoyed.... read more

Here we are somewhere in TX headed for Memphis. James Taylor-"You've Got a Friend." We've been playing old 60s music & it'smaking us sentimental. We are cousins so far removed but connected in some mysterious way. We had breakfast with Kay's sister, niece, nephew & nephew-to-be, Aren. Aren is studying for the ministry, which really piqued Betty's interest. They got so involved in conversation, Betty didn't tell Kay's sister goodbye & is now feeling guilty. This is our 4th trip together. Kay & Betty are the storytellers. They carry & tell the stories of the grandmothers & grandfathers. It's our gift to the present generation. Somewhere in E. Texas got gas & 2 cowgirl hats. Betty got a pink one = Code Pink. Just 2 cowgirls on the road. Kay's hat is a "real" cowgirl hat. ... read more

Hi and thanks for the comment answers; hey , news back to us is cool TYTY Last night was like being in Ontario; 28F the flashing sign said in Junction , as I was on my way to get a morning paper (San antonio one) and a coffee. 6:15 is a bit early for Rick so it's best I get up and get out! I had to scrape the windshield! Not knowing there was a scrapper in the car, I used a credit card! That worked. Breakfast at Isaack's. Two eggs easy over and 2 biscuits! And coffee. If I wake up earlier than 6, such as 5, I head to the ladies room; sit in a shower stall and read or knit. Today I had my shower at 5; it was dark then! On my ... read more

My good friend Elias invited me to join him as he went back home to Eagle Pass. Eagle Pass sits on the banks of the Rio Grande River about 140 miles southwest of San Antonio and opposite of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. Its srange because you are still in Texas but 95% of the people living in EP are Hispanic. So everyone is speaking Espanol, its very different from the rest of Texas, I thought to myself this must be what Mexico is like... We stayed with Elias's father, mother and little brother. They were so welcoming some of the nicest people you will meet. Some of the best Mexican food I had the whole time I was in Texas and Mexico was in the Perez home. They were fasinated by my knoledge and love of ... read more

Flying from Los Angeles to Dallas was a fairly short flight, so I was ready to go exploring upon arrival. I immediately noticed just how flat the terrain was... and how few trees there were! Having just left California and the crammed space.. and growing up in Georgia with trees and hills everywhere, it was a bit strange. I was left with the feeling a baby must have when they suddenly realize they are no longer wrapped up tight in the blankets and are left with nothing but space around them. I was staying with a friend, so of course the first thing we HAD to do was go to a real Texas steakhouse! A bit skeptical at this whole "Texas is best" mentality, I do have to give them credit.. the meal wasn't so bad ... read more

The Coca-Cola Report! As far as taste, it tastes the same as back home. its possibly a little sweeter but that may be influenced by the food I have been eating. However the shape of the cans are different. As you can see in my photo the top of the can tappers off at a sharper angle and the mouth hole is larger. This shape is more streamline, shaving milli-seconds off the time it takes to get a can from the table to my mouth. And the larger hole allows more to fill my mouth. A very popular drink in Texas that I have taken a strong liking to is Ice Tea. It tastes like regular tea but with ice. That may sound stupid to you and it did to me but its grown on me ... read more

Drew has been doing his best to show me places that are really San Antonio, the non touristy places. And quite frankly he's been doing an excellent job. I came to San Antonio to watch the Spurs, but they have taken a back seat, Id rather be soaking up as much of San Antonio as possible. AND THE FOOD! I actually had a few things I really wanted to do in San Antonio, such as eating breakfast tacos, trying ice tea, eating a big steak. I'm pleased to say I have accomplished most of them thanks to Drew. Today was a huge food day.... The night before we decided we would do breakfast tacos in the morning but Sarah had to start work early. So the answer was to wake up at 6:30am! I managed to ... read more

Hi ya’ll!! Well Texas was great - felt a bit more relaxed than Vegas…the weather was warmer and the nights balmy. We flew into Dallas Fort Worth on Fri afternoon and picked up our hire car after Kent went out the back and chose a good Chevvy Impala (not an ugly Buick like we had in LA). At first they offered us a Suzuki and Kent said he didn’t come to America to drive a Suzuki!! We headed out straight away to the Fort Worth stockyards, the historic part of the town where there are heaps of restaurants, shops and bars. Saw a loooong F350 limo that Kent loved. We had a fantastic steak in a place called Hunter Bros (had to go there of course - for all you Uraidla-ites), and then headed into Billy ... read more
