After packing and unpacking and packing some more, I have finally started my short time off to get to Portland. Ideally it would have been great to take my time across the Southwestern portion of these United States, but I stopped all of 6 hours or so the entire time through Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Mostly only because I had to find toilet facilities. I can't decide if it was because I was determined not to get dehydrated along the way or if it's signs of getting older. Sigh. It was definitely strange to have to stop at a gas station more often for myself than my car.... So there are a couple of pictures from along the way. I decided to go the US 40 route, the old Route 66, rather than the US ... read more

Travel has begun! I made it to Dallas last night at 12:30 am after taking forever to leave Kansas. I guess I just couldn't get enough Kansas in me :) (it's not like I've lived there for 23 years or anything!). So far I haven't really done anything but sleep, but I'm sure today and tomorrow will be really fun. I'm going apartment shopping and need to pick up some things for Europe still. My cell phone is officially off, so if anybody would like to talk to me you have to e-mail me a time for me to call you and hopefully I get the e-mail and can call you back. Hope you all are having a fantastic time!! Take care!... read more

OK that sounds inhuman and cruel to describe having a mini vacation while helping out a good buddy Ryan moving to his new place in Dallas, Texas. Moving, like any other unpleasant activities, requires a lot of sacrifices, including but not limited to, driving at least thirteen hours behind a U-Haul truck, sleeping deprived, boredom, lack of movement (no marathon training!), and nutrition malfunction consisting of many Red Bulls, chewing gum, MacDonald’s double cheeseburger and soda pop, just to realize that as soon as arriving at the destination place, instead of having a good rest, still need to haul heavy boxes, oversize furniture, and returning the U-Haul truck to a strange place across an unfamiliar city. It’s not that I have many things to complain about, but all travels always have ups and downs throughout the ... read more

We arrived in Austin to discover our hotel was not very 'downtown' at all and RIGHT BY A VERY LOUD FREEWAY! I decided to be ill for the first three days, thwarting Raj's plan to eat nothing but steak for a week by being unable to leave the room. Eventually we made it into town and headed up Congress Avenue - be in awe of our dedicated cultural sightseeing, when we wandered briefly through the State Capitol building and wondered 'are we supposed to be here?' Found Raj some authentic BBQ. I'd love to be here for South-by-Southwest, there are a lot of music venues around but most charge a hefty cover, the only free music seems to be country. Tomorrow we're leaving for Florida!... read more

I think one of the most time consuming things to do for this trip is to pack for it. How do you travel for a month with one backpack and a daypack? I can't bring an outfit for each day but I can wash clothes along the way. I am traveling to three different countries and will be on the move alot so I can't take along lots of luggage. So after much debate I have decided what I am going to take with me and the verdict is not very much stuff at all. If I have to buy it while I am there then so be it. If I can't find that item on that side of the world then I have to ask myself how can millions of people do without that particular ... read more

This morning there was a little surprise waiting for me next to the place where I currently live. A little car show seams to start here in the parking lot of Hooter's Restaurant. And this is something for my taste and of course I had to take some pictures. Apparently it was also something like a contest because later in the afternoon they announced the winners of the various categories. Every winner was called and posed with two Hooters' Girls for a picture and received some insignia they can pin up to a wall. According to the different categories and the few cars, I have to assume that everyone was a winner today. And they all lived happily every after! Click picture for full image! Welcome to the journal of Historian Herb and his traveling adventures. I am here in San Antonio (the home of the Alamo) preparing for my adventure. Gathering the items, clothes, and bags needed to travel to far off places. Two weeks from today I am going to embark on the biggest travel experience so far in my life. I am going to travel to Israel, Egypt, and Jordan from June 3rd to July 4th. I have been preparing for this trip since December 05 and my family, students, and coworkers are starting to get tired of me talking about my trip. The interesting thing so far is telling people where I am going this summer. I get mixed reaction such as, "I have always wanted to go there", "Are you going to wear a bulletproof vest", ... read more

I first saw Hamilton Pool Preserve on a postcard when I moved to Austin back in 1999. I knew immediately that I had to go to the preserve one day. Seven years later, one sunny Saturday morning in May, I called Tony and we headed to the pool for a day of relaxation. We drove from Austin to the preserve in less than an hour. We drove through picturesque farm roads and private properties fenced with barbwire to get there. Once you arrive, a moderate hike with plenty of trees and rock formations on the way makes the walk easier and more interesting to bear. As we got closer we could hear the water splashes and chatter of the people at the pool. Seeing the pool and cliffs for the first time poking out among the ... read more
