If you ever going to make it to Amarillo, go to the Big Texan Steak Ranch. We have had a great time there. And for those who need a challange... there is one. If you can finish one of there steaks in an hour your meal is for free and you get to stay in there hotel for the night also for free. The thing is that the steak is 72 ounces. (± 2 kilo). While we were there we saw two guys try it... and failed. To give you an impression see the pic of them when they started... the side dishes btw have to be eaten too. And no, we did not try it. We wanted to simply enjoy our meal... lol. And we have been serious all the way. (see the pics to ... read more

Ok i shouldn´t have said anything about the not having any rain so far in the previous blog. After leaving Cookeville we had rain all the way to Memphis. We had lightning strike right next to us in the bushes along the highway. Pretty scary, but also great to see how nature´s forces can be. After it got dry it also brought the humidity up... Thank God for airconditioned cars there is only a downside to it. You have to get out of the car at some point and then.... o boy. We stayed the night over in Bryant a little town past Little Rock Arkansas. From there it was of to Dallas in Texas. Not before we stopped for a look around in Hot Spings Arkansas. The place were Bill Clinton grew up... (see picture). ... read more

Getting to Austin was a royal pain in the arse and meant we had to take a 3 day train trip back to LA (again) then through into Texas. By now we are really getting fed up of the trains they are so damn slow and full of wierdo's (yes more of them)! As we have been spending such a long amount of time on the trains we have both been recently thinking alot about home and are starting to really get excited about being back next month, can't wait to have a proper cup 'o' tea and fish and chips! While waiting for the train from LA to Austin I was asked 5 times for money from beggars, one person asked me if I could buy them a rail pass and then one if I ... read more

Well, I'm in Austin, TX now since almost one week. And of course I haven't seen enough yet to give all kinds of information or make up a full relocation guide. Nevertheless, here are my first impressions. You may be surprised to learn that I have never been to Texas before. First of all, for those of you who know nothing about Texas like me, Austin is the capital of the state of Texas. It is in the southern half of Texas but it's normally revered to as Central Texas. The whole area is home to an estimated population of about 1,4 million, half of them living within Austin city limits. If traveling by car you find Austin on the Interstate Highway 35 with Dallas to the north and San Antonio to the south. Older maps ... read more

Today once again I got up fairly early; early enough to make it to Guadalupe National Park before it opened at 8 AM. When I arrived, I noticed I had less then a 1/4 tank of gas left. Not knowing where the next gas station would be and there not being many towns at all between Guadalupe and El Paso, I went all the way back to Carlsbad to get some gas just to be safe, which was about 60 miles round trip. Better safe then sorry I suppose. Arriving back at Guadalupe, I decided to hike the Devils Hall Trail instead of trying to get to the top of Guadalupe Mountain which is about 3,000 ft of gain in 4 miles. On hindsight I would of made it to the top of the mountain, but ... read more

Leaving Jackson, MS at around 9 AM, I knew I was going to run into some rain and sure enough I did. However it didnt slow me down too much. Going over the border into Louisiana I was amazed once again by the Mississippi River even though I've seen it a handfull of times previously. Every state I visit from Louisiana on I've never seen before, so this is all new to me. Driving along the road there is always something new to see. Entering Texas I was surprised how the terrain was rolling hills and not the flat landscape that I expected. Just before entering Dallas there was a farm on the South side of the road with horses, cows, and camels all in the same fenced in area. That was a strange site. Arriving ... read more

We have to buckle up and the captain is starting to bring the airplane to lower levels. He also begins to fly curves. One to the left, one to the right, one more to the right and so on and still sinking. Talking about (th)inking -- this reminds me of a funny Berlitz commercial which was send around the globe just recently by email. If you don't know it here's a brief summary. A German coast guard novice is hearing a SOS call from an apparently sinking boat. While the call is “We are sinking!” the coast guard with his German accent replies with a shaking voice: “What are you thinking about?”. Just hilarious! To see this commercial just go to video.google.com and search for the term “Berlitz”. You will receive quite a few links to ... read more

The thing about NASA is that it seems more for children nowadays. I don't know what I had in mind when I decided to go visit but children probably weren't on my list. Still, it was a nice educational visit to ease the boredom on a trip to Houston. While looking around I found a place that let's you touch moon rocks. I stayed there for a couple of minutes just feeling them and taking the moment in. These were moon rocks....from the moon....the same moon you've seen all your life floating up there in the sky! Its like you are touching a piece of another world, touching something that doesn't belong on earth, touching an extra-terrestrial object! But then I remembered touching the meteorites at the Texas Memorial Museum and I realized I had touched ... read more

Some really rich guy decided to do his own version of the historical sight in China. No really! Just take the detour on the way to Houston like we did one morning and head into Katy, Texas. Nestled between neighborhoods lies the great fake Chinese Emperor's Tomb, or as they call it, The Forbidden Gardens! A Chinese style courtyard (complete with gift shop of course) greets one as you walk in. Giant statue recreations of Chinese lions stare down their judgment on you. I advise you to go ahead and take the tour. Its both informative and gives you a general idea into both the history of the Chinese Emperor and the man who created Forbidden gardens in Katy, Texas. We took the tour and enjoyed it. It was quick, easy, and left plenty of time ... read more
