ARE WE THERE YET? No... still driving. We left Amarillo Tx.at 5 AM. We always have coffee (weak) and homemade wholewheat bread, feta cheese and olives before we start so that entitles us to a second breakfast at 9 AM. The real thing--bacon, eggs, potatoes. Makes the camper smell like a campfire because some of the pans were last used over a fire in the Big Horns last fall. We picked up new Texas maps at the Wichita Falls rest area and took a little rest. Have to be ready for the Big D. We went into Dallas via 114. Lots of trucks for a little while on the two lane road that they are working on making into a divided. Maybe next year? It is divided east of I-35. From there we slipped down to ... read more

My class took a few days to study the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit system) for our studio, as our project invoved a light rail system for Northwest Arkansas. These are just a few random pics, having nothing to do with the project...just some eye candy.... read more

It took us a while to get there but we finally made it! The sheer weirdness of a Stonehenge replica in the middle of the Texas Hill Country is just AWESOME! As a kid I was always attracted to the fascinating, the mysterious, mostly out of seeing them in books about paranormal activities. Stonehenge over in England is one of my most desired places to go visit. Much to my surprise some wacko decided to build his own version here in Texas. Steve and I took off early to some dark looking clouds. We hoped the sun would eventually peer through the clouds but that never happened. It also took us a long while to track down the right country road that winded down into the unknown hill country until finally the monument came into view. ... read more

My last full day at home. Should be fun. My bro's band is in the talent show. I am going to go watch them rock. Then, I have to begin saying goodbye. I am going to miss my family, friends, and Sarah very much. However, it is only five weeks, and I will be so busy that I know it will fly by. Next time I write I will be in Paris!... read more

We had a look around the 'beautiful' El Paso :p Ok, it's just a boring border town, but it did have an enormous market area, reminded me of Cheetham Hill in Manchester, apart from the Mexicans, of which there were many. We walked down to the border crossing, unfortunately we didn't see anyone rush the border, in fact they just seem to let droves of cars through. They are all coming one way, of course. Had a look round the flea market, had lunch at Taco Bell, a huge fast food chain selling Mexican food with the cheapest Burritos this side of the border. In fact we preferred the taste over the food we ate in Mexico. To be honest we weren't that impressed by the traditional Mexican food, the Tacos tasted a bit odd and ... read more

Another 10 hour journey on the train through a barren landscape of desert, rocks and ranches. We arrived in El Paso late in the day and headed for the only hostel in town, located in the Gardner Hotel. This place is straight out of the history books, a 1930's hotel which still had all the original fittings and old worldy feel, it was cool.... read more

North America » United States » Texas » San Antonio January 6th 2006

Looked around San Antonio on this bright sunny day. The main attraction is The Alamo, visited by millions of Americans every year. This is the place where the Texans bravely defended to the death against a Mexican invasion. We walked along a section of the famous San Antonio riverwalk which is lined with expensive touristy restaurants and bars, plus many ornate buildings and sculptures, although the river was having it's annual draining and dredging while we were there, it looked more like a mud pit. While we were looking for some groceries (San Antonio only has one general store in downtown), we decided to rescue a cute bear from the Walgreen's drugstore to accompany us on our travels. We named him Sandy, because of his colour and place of origin. Clever eh?... read more

We said our goodbyes to Theo and family, it's been a fantastic week catching up on old times, chatting about anything and everything, and drinking lots of wine. Many thanks to good friends. We headed back to downtown Dallas and checked our bags onto the Amtrak train, then had a bit of time to go up the observation tower for a fantastic (and windy) view of the city. We then set off on our 10 hour train journey to San Antonio, a much more comfortable trip than any bus ride with large comfy seats, great views of the countryside from the site-seeing carriage.... read more

Today we decided to brave the mean streets of downtown Dallas, actually it wasn't that mean, it was nice, clean and suprisingly quiet. Then again, only us, the homeless and the Mexicans ever walk anywhere here! We saw the place where President Kennedy was shot, the photo shows the 6th floor window of the building from where he was allegedly gunned down. A webcam is permanently positioned in the window. We had a wander through downtown, admiring the buildings and found our way to the Dallas World Aquarium, an excellent building which recreates many areas of jungle and aquatic life, including a tank which you can walk through with sharks swimming around you. Later we took the authentic old trolley bus to a nice district with shops and restaurants and ate at a Texan Steak House, ... read more

Louisa had marmite on toast for breakfast, a cause for great excitement,.. for Louisa. Watched United v Arsenal live on Theo's massive TV, almost as big as a football field in fact. Anthony bought us the biggest sandwich we'd ever seen which lasted us for 2 days. Another evening of wine and intellectual conversation ensued.... read more
