After an eleven hour flight from San Francisco, we landed in London Heathrow Airport, took a bus to Victoria Station in central London to pick-up our car rental for a two hour drive to Ettington in Warwickshire. We stayed at The Leys B&B, our hosts were Brenda & Bob, the nicest people you will ever meet. Brenda is a very good looking petit blond with a wealth of knowledge about the local area, in particular, Stratford-upon-Avon, the birth place of Shakespeare where she is also a tour guide. From Ettington, we day tripped to Stratford-upon-Avon and the North Cotswolds. Our room was clean and tidy with a good view of the backyard. We were joined by Brenda & Bob for a great breakfast each morning. The Leys B&B is certainly the place to stay in Ettington. ... read more

Take-off We're all packed, according to our packing lists. Zak, who has a fetish for making small kits, has organized a small emergency medical kit (10 X 12 X 4cm), a SAS-styled survival kit, a sewing kit, and small lightweight pieces of equipment like small Swiss army knives, which come in handy throughout the trip.... Instead of telling the same story to everybody and thereby imperiling myself to the dire consequenses of carpal tunnel syndrome, I've decided to sell out and join the blog world. Plus, this way you guys all get to see pictures and what not, which is totally bodacious. So, let me begin: I'm currently sitting at the office for my first day on the job here in Rijswijk as the EPSS Service Take On Manager. This momentus occasion, consisting of me, a blank desk, and this laptop means several things have already happened: 1) I survived a trip 'across the pond', which of course was not entirely uneventful. My first flight was cancelled, and so I had to take an alternative trip consisting of a layover in Minneapolis and a second international flight which put me next ... read more

I didn't die! Seriously though, we were probably climbing steadily for 20 minutes. I wasn't a wuss and biked the whole way, with a few stops for pictures. When we finally reached Fiesole, we found a museum and archaelogical site of Roman ruins on top of Etruscan ruins. We wandered through the museum and then had lunch overlooking the ruins, surrounded by flowers and cherry blossoms and the cypresses. Minus the barbarian hordes against which the place was built, the countryside was awe-inspiring. We could see the Duomo we had climbed earlier. It kind of minimalized the 400-odd steps. The way back down we passed a few houses - ok castles - that I decided I had to own or at least stay in. These weren't hotels, or agriturismo's, they were just houses that people lived ... read more

Managed to stay up until 10 last night, which was quite an effort. Had bean burgers and veges for dinner and watched digital TV. Caught the 176 bus into the west end with Sonya who had some work meetings. She pointed me in the direction of Westminster and drew me a map of where to meet Adam at Waterloo in the afternoon. I saw the London Eye, which is basically a big ferris wheel on the south side of the Thames that takes 45 minutes to go around. Crossing Westminster bridge I saw Big Ben and then Westminster Abbey. Walking further west I went to see Buckingham Palace, will have to go back another day to see the changing of the guard. Walked along The Mall to Trafalgar Square, then back across the Thames via The ... read more

Hey guys, Well its been a busy week! Made it back to London, spent a couple of days on my own sightseeing (as Billies flight back from Iceland was pushed back), checked out Covent Garden, British Museum and also this flat out at South Ealing. So Billie then made it back from Iceland in one peice, we had a day or two to quickly figure out what we were going to do, we saw a few flats, (some dodgy, some ok), then this flat I found in Brentford, South Ealing offered us a twin room for 4 weeks (initially they wanted us to sign a contract for 6-months, which we really didnt want to do, being in London only 2 days, and not knowing any areas at all!) But in the end we decided that 4 ... read more

Spring is springing in the Sarka Valley. After supper we took a walk up the valley. Plants and leaves are exploding everywhere. I really like the delicate greens of spring. They are here for such a short time. I was somewhat surprised to see the marsh grass does not know it is spring yet. There is no green showing in the marsh grass that covers the wet land at our end of the valley. Now if the mosquitoes and ticks do not discover it is spring I would be happy. There are deer in the valley. In fact there are deer all over the Czech Republic. On the way home from Cesky Krumlov we saw numerous deer in the fields and we all know about the deer-tick relationship to Lyme Disease. Now that spring is here ... read more
