I have been a slack blogger but the net was so expensive in venice 7 euro for 1 hour! Anyway I am now in Florence and got free internet at the hostel. Well what can i say ... Venice was very very beautiful, a maze of small alleys and canals, i left the lonely planet and its silly little map in my bag and just went any direction. There are no cars anywhere so incrediably quiet (except for the hordes of japanese tour groups and italian school kids). I spent the first day just wondering around totally amazed, just looking at the shop windows with heaps of yummy italian cakes and pastries, gelato and gorgeous venetian masks and the wonderful sound of italian everywhere. Went to St Marks Basilica and sat and watched some of the ... read more

Hi all! Well i made it! Which is surprising considering we were running a little late leaving for the airport AND i managed to LEAVE THE TICKETS AT HOME! Luckily i realised before we got on the motorway so we drove back for them, made it to the airport in more than enough time, and after a few hugs and a few tears (from Mum) i was on my way. The first leg of my flight was quite enjoyable, after my seat was double booked and i got bumped up to Business class! I was treated to masses of leg room, a TV, good food and service and a seat that reclines waaay back. On arrival in Seoul, Korea, i wasnt too sure where to go to get my hotel booking, and having no reservation or ... read more

Well the adventure is officially begun. I had a hilarious three days with the people from IES on our food tour. The weather was (is) kind of gross, and I pretty much packed for Greece, so now I'm enjoying the nice every-layer-is-wet feeling. After sleeping for two hours the night before (I went for aperitivi with a guy from Amsterdam and didn't end up back home till one-thirty) I dragged myself to the farthest metro stop from town to meet the group. We stopped in Cremona on our way to our hotel in Parma and listened to a violin maker talk what goes in to a really good violin. On to Parma, and then dinner. This dinner was quite easily the most food I have ever consumed, which will be more or less shocking depending on ... read more

Never say never. Last June when we left Cesky Krumlov and a few days later when we left Prague we said that we would love to visit these towns again, but that it probably would never happen. Little did we know, nor could we have guessed that seven months later we would be living in Prague for half a year and that we would have the opportunity to visit Cesky Krumlov again. Cesky Krumlov is a small Bohemian town in the southern part of the Czech Republic. It is practically unchanged from medieval days. This, at least for Nancy and I, makes it a fascinating town to visit. The buildings are absolutely ancient. Many are in good repair and many are being refurbished. UNESCO has designated Cesky Krumlov a World Heritage Site. This designation seems to ... read more

We missed our train in Milan and arrived in Frieburg late but Tommy's dad, Klemmens was there to meet us anyway and what a nice change it was for us! We got to leave the train station in a car instead of trying to navigate public transportation and we arrived at a house instead of some dodgy hostel! It was a very good day for us. While in Freiburg we celebrated both Tommy and Andrea's birthdays. It's tradition in Germany that the night before your birthday all your friends take you out and do a new year's-esque countdown 10 seconds before midnight. And even though it was Andrea's first trip to Germany, her birthday was no exception. Tommy's friends all met us at the beer garden on April 2nd and counted down to midnight, after which ... read more

9th April 2005 South-West London, England. I've made friends with a Kiwi guy, Scott, and a German guy, Ghunter (both hotties), over the past few days and this morning we all decided to head off to the infamous Camden Market together. After some ar*ing around we finally arrived and discovered, with some disappointment, that it was mostly just clothing, studded jewellery, and the all-pervading Magic Mushrooms being sold there. I'd been told a few days beforehand before by my Aussie mate Nicola that in Australia these kind of mushrooms are illegal (never occured to me to ask), and the fact that it's legal here in the UK is a big 'whoo-hoo!' for travellers. She recommended that I try it, and though my initial reaction was not favourable it sort of grew on me. Yes, you heard ... read more

In Florence now! Woo! Florence is a nice city. We got here around 3:40PM yesterday (took a train after the funeral mass was over). Speaking of which, what a strange and amazing experience. So many people gathered together to honor a man and honor God (or just watch the sight of it all)-- it's nearly indescribable. The crowds stood together, sat together, clapped and cheered, sang and said prayers, took communion-- the wind ruffling my hair was the same ruffling the pages of the book placed on the Pope's coffin, the words said and sung were said and sung just a stone's throw away from where I was-- and all the different people gathered at the Circus Maximus-- simply incredible. It was amazing to be at Rome at such a historic time. Granted, actually being AT ... read more

We (Sarah, Joan, Kelly, Matt B, & I) took the train to Bayeux and started our tour from there, which was basically just renting a driver & a minivan to take us to all the big WWII places in Normandy. First stop: the Musee du Debarquement, where they had old uniforms, model ships & plane, maps, and short movies on the war; it overlooked the remains of 'Mulberry B' (an artificial port). Second stop: German bunkers which housed guns (though they looked more like cannons) that had a 12 mile range. Third stop: American Cemetary overlooking Omaha Beach Fourth stop: Omaha Beach (with monument) Fifth stop: Pointe de Hoc - one of the few battlesites from WWII left unchanged; the craters are huge but grown over with grass which kind of takes away from the bombed ... read more

On our way to the Netherlands we stopped to eat at a restaurant that is actually built above the interstate. People driving to Germany enter the restaurant on their side of the interstate, and people driving to the Netherlands enter on the other side. You go up some stairs and then meet in the middle. There were actually 3 eating areas: a pizza place, a cafeteria, and a fancier dinner place. The building also had a souvenir shop, where we ran into friends from Katherine's playgroup. They were on their way back to Germany. The food was good and Katherine enjoyed the play area for kids.... read more
