The rest of the day went alright. Not long after writing before we lost our seats on the train because we didn't have "reserved" seating. So we stood teh rest of the time and listened to our i-pods. We got off in Paris and took the subway to another station so that we could go to Brussels. This time we had to reserve a seat. We split a tuna sandwhich made on a baguette - it was very tasty. The trip to Brussels was quick and then we walked until we found a hotel. It has TV, free breakfust and a SHOWER! We dropped our bags off and walked around. We had dinner at the Brussells Grill and it was good to finally sit and enjoy a meal. Afterwards we found a place to use the ... read more

Right now i'm on a train from Cherborg to Paris. I didn't write last night because the boat-ride was making me ill. But i'll write about yesterday now. We got up and walked to the train station to find out there were no trains to the harbor. So we took a bus there instead. We got there and bought tickets for the boat and then had a few hours to pass before we could board. We mostly hung out at the cafe in the station playing cards and reading. I'm glad we bought cards ^_^ Finally we boarded the boat. There were hundreds of what seemed to be French students on as well, so it was noisy and crowded. We dropped off our bags in our tiny room (at the very bottom of the boat - ... read more

On our drive to the northern City of York, we made a quick stop at Coventry and headed straight to the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, Church of St. Michael. The ruins of St Michael’s are the consequence of violence in our own century. On the night of 14 November 1940, the city of Coventry was devastated by bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. The Cathedral burned with the city, having been hit by several incendiary devices. The new cathedral was consecrated on 25 May 1962, in the presence of HM The Queen. The ruins remain hallowed ground and together the two create one living Cathedral. ... read more

After years of saving, months of planning, weeks of researching and buying the bikes and various new equipment and gear Erika reckons we needed, then trying to sell/give away/store all of our personal possessions, finishing work and sorting out all the red tape that somehow seems to be involved with becoming an unemployed vagrant, we are finally ready to start our journey! Many thanks to my folks for generously donating a large part of their attic to all the stuff we really couldn’t throw away or convince anyone to buy from us, and for putting up with us in the final few stressful days of preparations. Finally everything was set for our departure on the morning of Monday 11th April - true to form we fail and manage to start cycling away at 1pm in the ... read more

It rained today, and hailed a bit too. I was supposed to go into the village while Sonya had a work meeting in the flat, but it was too wet so I just read magazines and stuff in her room. The meeting was with 2 guys, Bronze n Black, who want her to do some adverts for them. She got a call today to say that she's got a job to do the advertising for Jack Johnson when he tours here in September. Didn't go on our pub crawl tonight as it's too wet to go out. Just had dinner and watched sex and the city and some friends episodes. Might go into Greenwich or something tomorrow as Sonya has the day off and has to take some photos for her photography assignment for college.... read more

Jason is two today. He is the much beloved son of two of the people we live with in the dorm here. His dad is studying here and his mom is doing the 1,000 things any mom does plus helping ever so much to make the music in our worship and chapel services marvelous. This family shares their two boys with all of us which is wonderful since most of us are far away from children, grandchildren, younger brothers and sisters, etc. The whole community smiles when they see Jason. He is learning to talk but he has no trouble communicating even when he has no words. He smiles and laughs and wins all hearts. It is amazing to watch him in chapel or church. He sits quietly and sings from the hymnal or printed page ... read more

Well, originally I was only going to be here for 2 nights....really, I was. Then, I started hanging out at the beach, met a bunch of people, and next thing you know its 4 days later and I'm still here. I'm staying at this really great house that this woman from Lagos, Zelinda, owns. She's so friendly and helpful, it's great. There are a bunch of people from Canada here, and most of the Portuguese people speak English, so I've kinda been slacking with the real travel thing, but oh well. I've been eating lots of great Portuguese seafood dishes, and of course have discovered that 'free-pouring' drinks is not a good thing for me. The first night I went out here, this really nice bartender named Hugo ended up looking after me. We swapped some ... read more

Well, here I am at Heathrow airport waiting to board my flight to Cork. today was our last day in London - deb, luke, emma and captain cuddles (a.k.a. aaron ) are probably also waiting for their flight home - but they are at a different terminal. We actually go to the airport fairly early, which was good cos th tube was getting pretty crowdd as it was and any later would have made it a real pain to get here. My first stop once I got to my terminal was the bookshop - where I picked up a biography of Catherine de Medici- which is actually really good! (credit goes to tour manger matt and his mini history lessons for making interested in reading it) Today has bee pretty cruisy, we went to Harrods which ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 14th 2005

Venice was a blast. We cruised into its beautiful harbor early one morning and were greeted by a strange sight: a large beautiful city busy with foot traffic and boats along its waterfront, but not a vehicle in sight anywhere! Mile after mile of beautiful old buildings seemly perched directly atop the water, interspersed with canals alive with pole-driven gondolas, taxis (motorboats) and buses (larger boats, like a small ferry). The effect was a bit like Catfish Row in Charleston suddenly dragged out into the harbor. After the ship docked in an industrial area, we promptly took a smaller boat directly to the heart of the old city, the Doge’s Palace on the Plaza of St. Mark’s Basilica. The place and the old cathedral, both built hundreds of years ago, stand side by side. Our Venetian ... read more
