So last night not much was going on and honestly my legs were killing me from the walk to the Tower of London. I chilled in the common room with the Irish guy Ken and watched a couple movies until about 12:30am and got some Burger King, £4.55 or almost $9 for a chicken sandwich, quite the deal i must say. The burgers are dirt cheap but im not getting any ground beef here in the U.K. with the mad cow disease and all. Actually most people here seem to be staying away from it. I got up this morning around 12 as I think I slept through my alarm clock...oops. But I showered up and headed down to the common room agin to watch a bit of tv before heading out. Until today ive gone ... read more

I left Cinque Terre early on Saturday lucky for me cause there was alot of delays. Italian trains are cheap but they dont always run to schedule. As i was approching Certaldo i was wondering if this was a good idea it seems very very country and maybe i should go to Siena (a bigger city with more options)... Got to Certaldo and nothing much was open and there was no one around especially since it was saturday. And it was raining heavily.. I called the hostel but no one answered. I remembered that the hostel was 25 mins walk so I walked in the rain in the general direction hoping there would be a sign somewhere. I got to the hostel, it was a old convent and seemed to be deserted, just one dog running ... read more

Bach’s Requiem The Church of St. Nicholas sits in the middle of the Little Quarter. With its large dome it is quite a landmark. Construction on St. Nicholas began in 1703 and the finishing touches were made in 1769. As we walked past we saw that Bach’s Requiem was scheduled to be performed at 7:00 this evening. “Do you want to go?” Nancy asked. “Why not?” I replied. We walked up the steps and bought two tickets. It was 6:00 at that time and we had not eaten our evening meal yet. Nancy-Bill had given me the money and I bought the tickets. Just as I finished handing over the money and got the tickets in my hand, someone opened the church door. I belatedly realized we were going to be sitting for an hour in ... read more

Planned to go to Pisa today. Woke up at 10 to the gentle sound of rain on my roof. I open the shutters and peer at the steady sheet of drizzle. Just what I thought. Back to bed. This seems to be happening every Saturday I decide to break from my sleepy, dreamy rest. Well, I'm up. And I've got an entire day ahead, and a working umbrella. THE BARGELLO An hour later, however, I decide to visit a museum in Florence I’d never been to, but had been reading about. The Bargello, originally called the Palazzo del Popolo in mid 13th century, and then the seat of the Podesta’ or the chief Magistrate 100 years later. 16th century Medici’s made it the seat of the chief of Police, calling it the Bargello, but not before ... read more

Today Dale and I took a quick 15 min trip north (towards Amsterdam) and visited the city of Leiden. The weather was total crap...about 45 and raining, but what the heck, it's my first weekend and I gotta make the most of it right? We picked up a walking tour map and with Dale as navigator, I took up to providing tour-guide style info about each of the attractions we hit. Along the way in we saw our first windmill, which we later found was the town windmill museum. Pics of the De Valk windmill and other Leiden stuff is here: url=http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/briansiy/album?.dir=f5cb&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photosBrian's Netherlands trip photos Along the way we saw the first university established in the Netherlands, visited the area where Rembrandt was born, and also saw the church of St. Peter. Because of the church ... read more

At 8am on Saturday morning, Laura and I took a bus ride to the 19th century. Well, not quite, but pretty close. We headed for Sevilla to see their festival that occurs every spring. The women dress in Flamenco dresses and the men in three piece suits or riding outfits. Horses and carriages line the streets, filling quicker with each hour, and the sidewalks are transformed into city-like blocks with ¨casetas¨lined from one street to the next, back to back with others, for five blocks one way and five blocks the other. In these casetas, there is dancing, the traditional flamenco, eating, drinking and fellowship with friends. However, for people who aren´t from Sevilla, it´s not as fun as it sounds. These are casetas privadas, or private areas, where you must be invited in or have ... read more

One of our goals today was to see the Church of St. Michael. We have seen pictures of the church, but had not actually seen the church. This small 18th century wooden church was moved to Prague from a village in the Ukraine. I was fascinated with the roofing shingles. They are small wooden shingles that are about two inches across, about five inches long and perhaps half an inch thick. To me they make a beautiful pattern on the church. The church is in Kinsky Garden which is right beside Petrin Park. In fact it is hard to know when you leave one and enter the other. Both are on the big hill, or should I call it a small mountain that rises on the west side of the Vltava river above the Little Quarter of ... read more

The walk up the east side of the hill in Pekrin Park is a long walk. There are places where the path is very steep, but there are interesting places along the way. On top of the hill are an observatory, a mirror maze, concessions shops, food shops, gardens, part of the old wall and other interesting places.... read more

After checking into our B&B The Alcuin Lodge, just a five minute walk from the York city walls; we took a walk through 1900 years of history on York's city walls. Built in Roman times, these three and one half miles of Roman fortifications let you see York from a different and very beautiful perspective. They've been added to and rebuilt over time and now have parts from across the centuries. York has a very long and intricate history. I will not get into much of it here, but it is the cathedral city of the Archbishop of York. The Romans occupied the area in AD 71 and built a fortress and wall, traces of which remain. In the 7th century Paulinus became the first Archbishop of York, and Edwin, King of Northumbria, built a church ... read more
