Assisi is so surprising! To start in Siena, the hotel called a taxi, and as the driver thought he knew more than I did, he took me to the wrong bus station. But, I had been well prepared by the guide Michele and insisted to the driver that the SENA bus to Assisi left from the train station. Thus the ride cost more (12.50 Euros) than the bus ticket to Assisi (11 Euros). Standing in the right place, I overheard a couple discussing in English if this was the right place, and I confidently assured them it was - the schedule was attached to the post. They were from Australia, visiting parts of Europe they hadn’t been to yet. We conversed until the bus came. The route was as before to Perugia and then through more ... read more

Greek Island - Naxos Instead of doing the usual Mykonos, Ios, Santorini stuff - we thought we'd escape the 18 year olds and head to two of the other islands in the Aegean. We had a long trek over from Turkey with planes and ferries etc. but it was well worth it in the end. The first thing we thought when we got here was this place is paradise. We checked into an apartment no more than 10 metres from the beach with an awesome view out to sea.The best thing about Naxos is that, although it is one of the largest islands in the Cyclades, there is no international airport there so it is yet to be spoilt by the hundreds of tourists on package holiday deals that usually ruin paradise places - bruvs with white ... read more

First update for a couple of days, haven’t really had much to say I’m afraid. Have spent most of my time searching the net for share accommodation. My laptop battery only last about 2 hours and its amazing how fast 2 hours goes when on the net. That said, I do get distracted with other emails (not to mention any names, KELLY!), checking out band sites, doing a bit of job hunting and the like. Once my battery is flat, I plop myself in front of the tele at the hostel whilst my lappy recharges. Then its back to surfing the net. To further complicate things I don’t have a net account so I need to leach access (perfectly legal I tells you …). Luckily there are a few places within close walking distance that ... read more

Today was a day devoted to being a tourist and I have to say I have enjoyed myself. This morning after breakfast I walked down to the “Church of the Resurrection of Christ” which is also known as the “Savior on the Spilled Blood” (I mentioned this in Saturday’s post). It was built between 1883 and 1907 on the spot where Alexander II, the Emperor of Russia , was mortally wounded in 1881. In fact, in one spot inside of the church is a sectioned off “altar” (wrong term) purported to be the spot where he was wounded (assassins threw bombs at his carriage). While much different from the other churches in St. Petersburg, it is probably what most American’s would think of, as it is based on St. Basil’s in Moscow (complete with onion ... read more

I don't think that I could ever get used to Spaniards' sense of time. 5:00 at night is still early in the afternoon... 10:00 is dinner time. I got hungry last night at 6:00, but nothing is open yet. Would I have gone even if it were? Probably not. I really need to get over my phobia of speaking Spanish. I didn't say anything yesterday, though, so today so far I've done infinitely better. 5 words! Honestly, it was out of sheer necessity. I hadn't eaten since shortly after my plane took off from New York on Tuesday night... yeah, almost 2 days ago. I didn't eat for 2 days because I didn't want to speak Spanish... isn't that ridiculous? Well, today I was surprisingly still hungry. I decided that since I had to do ... read more

Who would have thought after running away from Nantes that the rain would follow me down here. Oh well liked the place so much that I´m going to stay for a few days anyway before working out where to next. San Sebastian really comes alive in summer, the major selling point for the pension that I´m staying in is that it is close to La Concha beach. La Concha beach is a crescent shaped beach that you can imagine covered in the finest of Spanish beauties taking in a little sun, the reality is that´s it not quite summer yet so the only birds on the beach are a couple of wet seagulls. But there are other features that make San Sebatian a place worth stopping, the cathedrals, the plazas, the old town and of course ... read more

Last year I had my last big trip in the camper van, an ancient VW with peculiar looking high top roof which looks a bit like an ice cream van from the back. Fortunately before this trip we had managed to get a new roof vent so the green plant tray which looked rather like a dustbin lid from a distance was removed. I felt a little more ordinary after this event. So after some preparation involving me packing loads of so my husband thought useless things 'just in case' ,we bravely set off and of course it was raining. First stop - yes- Morrisons at Fakenham for things I had forgotten, ie food items and a veg knife. As I could buy knives only in packs of 6 I didn't bother. So - onto the ... read more
