Thank goodness it cools down in the evenings in Madrid. It was 28 degrees with a breeze last night at around 10:30, and if you can believe it that felt refreshing. Sheila and Aron decided they'd best play like the locals so after their afternoon tapas, wandered the city for a while (note we should have been siesta'ing but never made it). At around 10:30 started looking for dinner, and it took us until 11:30 to find an empty seat somewhere. Ate a meat and cheese platter (Aron ate most of a pig, Spanish style I believe) and then shared a salad. So much cheese, so much meat. So few veggies. The salad had a minimal amount of lettuce and greens, loaded with mozza (whole strips of bocconcinni), blue cheese, proscuitto, and the like. Need ... read more

Weather Report Bright start ! Surprisingly weather remained generally bright until late afternoon. Probably should have set-off sooner but the poor weather of past few days has slowed down my reaction time ! Not expecting fine day… Left camp site at about 8.30am. Made for Gog Magog hills only a couple of miles down the road with the intention of parking and walking up the hill to enjoy the view and take some phots. Arrived to find that the height limit into the CP was less than seven feet - my car with bike is over seven feet ! Cambridge City Council - really not very helpful. That disappointment was put to one side and I headed to the east of Cambridge and started to work my way northwards. Landscape in this area both flatter ... read more

I've decided to spend most of the day in Dublin, as the sun is shining (at least temporarily), and I can see a few more sights, and maybe get some photos taken. I get myself packed, and then decide on a hot breakfast (haven't had much to eat for the last few days, so a bit peckish). the €9.50 for Irish breaky is sounding like the solution. Discovered a whole new section of the hotel. My room is 100' from the train line. I don't think this side is anywhere near that. The breakfast was quite good, lots to choose from, and it's hot. Something interesting in the mix. Black & White Pudding. They look like flattened muffins. Some dark, some light in colour. I know better than to put things in my mouth, without ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Dijon May 18th 2007

I am currently on the train, en-route to Dijon. I have my hostel booked, and all is well. I have started to read Hugo's 'Les Misérables,' with the help of my French-English dictionary. I figure that after I get through the first few hundred pages, the rest will be easy, and I'll have a better understanding of the language. I may have to get a new dictionary, however, because the one I brought with me isn't advanced enough for this book.... read more

A viagem começou algo atribulada.

Ah, time to leave Oxford and head to the home of one of my readers’ most favorite writers—the invaluable Jane Austen. We took a coach out from Oxford to the house where she revised Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility and wrote her other novels. It was the house she began her career as an author from. The house is very well preserved with lots of original Austen artifacts, but at the moment much of the house is filled with costumes from the new movie Becoming Jane, which is already out here in England and will be out in the states come August I here. I can’t vouch for the movie—the tour guides warned us of its historical flaws—but the costumes were quite beautiful. The house warmed me a bit to Jane. It was interesting ... read more

We took a tram (didn't pay because we didn't know how to) to National Archaeological Museum. Today is National Museum Day. Good news is that entrance was free!!, but bad news is, the whole place is crowded with school kids.... The Acropolis is under major restoration and plus the crowd, there's simply no way to get a decent photo of the Parthenon without scaffolding structures and people. No matter what, we've seen the REAL thing.. :)... read more

The drugs seem to be kicking in already and I'm feeling on the up. Moved to a nearby hostel today as the place I was staying at was fully booked. When I walked in, there was a lady screaming at the receptionist about how she had left her bag in the storage behind the desk and now all her travel documents and valuables had been stolen. The police soon arrived to calm the lady down and sort out what was going on. All this in the middle of me checking in. Just what you want to here right? At least I was on the first floor at this place, and the bedroom was massive with 5 single beds rather than bunks. That was about as good as this place got though...the bathrooms were shocking, not sure ... read more
