First leg done! Flight was great (no screaming children) - even got some sleep - but still arrived pretty tired. Took the tube from the airport to the hotel, and got there before 4 pm. Settled in and then went in search of food (good old reliable stomache!). Found a terrific Indian restaurant called Masala Zone in behind the hotel and Covent Gardens. So good in fact, ended up here again tonight. Did a walk-about to Oxford Circus, down Regent to Picadilly, then Leicester, before heading back home. Still only 8:30 by the time I got back. Was down for the count by 9. Forgot about the sidewalk dodge. It's busy all the time, and you have to dodge all around the people. God help you if you want to get into a store and your ... read more

It's sunny, sunny, and hot. Yahoo! Where's my sunscreen? Can't find the tube I know that I packed. This doesn't bode well for a day in the park, I meet up with Pat at Victoria Station, as she comes in from Sutton on a train. We hope on the tube, and a while later we find ourselves at Kew Garden. Where you get off is a little shopping area, that is very quaint. They even have a Starbucks, which we decide is a must to start off our day, and do some catch up. You walk down a street with some nice looking houses, and then you come up to Kew. Impressive gates. Not cheap here either. I think it was £12. I'm trying not to think about the costs, and just hand the money ... read more

Laundry day. Between bird poop, red mud, and just lack of underwear and socks, it's now a must! The laundrette is only a couple blocks away, so I pack up my smaller rolling bag with dirty laundry (thank god I brought my own package of laundry soap), and spent a couple of hours (and £3 per washer and £1 for 20 minutes drying time) getting things cleaned up. The news says that Italy is having an Air Controllers strike. Wondering if Jim made it back to Canada or not today? A lot of flights have been cancelled because of it. Laundry aside, there's still lots to see. And low and behold, the sun is coming out. No sign of rain, and a little humid. Really - do you think it could be the bird? I ... read more

Another early morning, as my flight out is at 10:00, but the rain shower and Irish breakfast almost make up for it. The airport is 30 minutes away by bus, and we are supposed to check in 2 hours before hand. Belfast Airport is everything all the other airports I've been in over here, are not. No stairs to drag your bags up, it's small and clean, and you don't have to walk 5 miles to get to your gate. Definitely didn't need to be here this early. So I did what the flight/gate board said - Relax and Shop. Caught up on the news. The Cutty Sark, dry docked at Greenwich, has burned. They don't know if it's salvageable yet or not. I hope they can save it, as I saw it back in '88, ... read more

This is an exciting day! I've scheduled a tour for the coast north of Belfast. Planned - Rope Bridge, Dunluce Castle, Bushmills Distillery and the Giant's Causeway. 9:15 the tour bus came to the hotel and picked a group of us up. This didn't start off all that well, as once they picked up a few more, we went back to their headquarters, and we had to pay for the trip (which we thought we had done when we reserved). Then they advised that the £18 was actually £20, and because I was paying by Visa it would be £22. Oh, and by the way, they aren't covering any admissions (and they didn't know how much they were - so there!), all of which didn't match their brochure. Maybe I should just jump ship now!?! ... read more

I'm going to walk all the way over there?

Woke up feeling semi-refreshed. Would've been much better without the 2 hour alarm interlude. Noted that my jeans and bra were still rolled up besides my runners, just in case... Stepped into the shower, and I'm really not leaving here now. Rain shower head. Ahhhh. After pampering myself a bit, I head down for breaky. A hot Irish breakfast is included, and Black & White Pudding is once again on the menu. Still not going there! Very windy today, and it's sunny one minute, and rain showers the next. Walked around the main area of town. Belfast city (downtown) is actually quite small. It's a real mix of new and old. Can't say that there is anything distinct about it. Wide streets, and while at first it looks clean, you would be shocked by the ... read more

I've decided to spend most of the day in Dublin, as the sun is shining (at least temporarily), and I can see a few more sights, and maybe get some photos taken. I get myself packed, and then decide on a hot breakfast (haven't had much to eat for the last few days, so a bit peckish). the €9.50 for Irish breaky is sounding like the solution. Discovered a whole new section of the hotel. My room is 100' from the train line. I don't think this side is anywhere near that. The breakfast was quite good, lots to choose from, and it's hot. Something interesting in the mix. Black & White Pudding. They look like flattened muffins. Some dark, some light in colour. I know better than to put things in my mouth, without ... read more

I'm catching up on this many days later - no Internet in Belfast - but more on that later... 5:00 am is much to early to get up when on holidays. Have to be at the train station (across town for 6:40). Shower is a must. It's bad enough I'm not a morning person, but someone has forgotten to turn up the water pressure (pressure is down during the night, so toilet flushing is an experience as well). There is barely enough water to get me wet. Having trouble getting my hair wet and then getting the shampoo out. Dumping my head under the sink is out of the question (it's 2 faucets tight up against the back wall of the sink), and the toilet bowl isn't an option. We do the best we can, ... read more

Slept pretty late today. Too many late nights I guess. But still lots of time to check out Dublin, in the rain. It rained here (BC style) all day, and then it poured after dinner. Can't remember being this wet. Really limited what you wanted to do around town. As I mentioned before, it's very hard to get information about what to do, or how to do it. Finally at 5:00 today, I came across a mall, which had tourist maps, that was the clearest map I'd seen, and listed some things I hadn't even heard of before. Maybe I'll have time on Friday, before I catch a bus out to Belfast, to see some of these things, and try and get some photos taken. I did spend a few hours at the Dublin Castle, which ... read more

I'm here. Not sure how, but I'm actually sitting in an internet cafe, here in Dublin. Crazy morning. Packing took much longer than I thought, as I had to pack only what would fit in 1 bag (that's all they allow on these cheap flights), and leave the rest with the hotel. Then decided I really needed to do laundry. Only one more day of undies, and have run out of socks. The laundrette isn't too far away, so I wheeled my bag down there. Everything went into one washer (at £3 a load, sorting whites & coloureds just didn't seem so important). Missed breaky, so found this cafe that makes breakfast all day. Got an omlette and chips, as there was no way on earth I could've even eaten 1/4 of what they served for ... read more
