Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada May 13th 2007

After a short flight from Barcelona, I arrived in Granada in southern Spain. Granada is beautiful and much more laid back from Barcelona. It is a large city, but the main attractions are in the city center and within walking distance (all uphill, of course :)). My hotel is in a pedestrian plaza, with tons of restaurants and gelato stands and a big fountain in the middle, a really great location (and at 50Euro, pretty cheap). A couple of hours after I checked in I had tickets for the Alhambra palace, which is amazing! Granada is lobbying to have it included in the new modern wonders of the world, and I can see why. I took tons of pictures, and will try to upload them before I leave. The city itself is very quaint and laid ... read more

Sunday, May 13 and we’re sitting in a very nice little B&B overlooking the harbour at Uig (pronounced (oo-ig) Ferries depart from here for some of the outer islands. We watched one arrive, unload and load trucks & cars and depart in about 20 minutes. For scenic grandeur the last 2 days of touring on Skye has been wonderful. So many vistas opened up at turns in the very narrow one-lane roads. The highlight was a trip down a glen on the south-east coast to Loch Brittle. Here we had close-up views of the famous Cuillin Hills. (we think the pronunciation is coo-lin as in food) Great photo opportunities were presented. ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon May 13th 2007

LisbonJulie J Vanover I arrived in Lisbon early in the morning fresh from a nights sleep on the train. I arrived at my hostel and had breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast!!! Oh it was so good, by far the best breakfast that I have had. I was preparing to leave for the days adventours when Daniel arrived in the bed next to me. He had just landed from Brazil so we headed off together to explore Lisbon. He's from Brazil, so he speaks Portuguese, super bonus! We first went to Saint Jorge's Castle, which is an old castle on the hill. The castle was cool, but inside there were these ugly white tents with vendors everywhere. We both agreed that this distracted from the coolness of the castle. The had a mirror projection system that ... read more

Switzerland Europe » Switzerland » Lucerne By Kim and ColleenMay 13th 2007Sunday Went for a tour up to Mount Titlas, a 1000 ft mountain a short drive out of Lucerne, the countryside was spectacular, just like in the postcards. Colleen was terrified but still came along for the trip. We went up 4 gondolas to reach the top, the last one was a rotating gondola, it is round and the floor rotates as it goes up. It was about 1 deg at the top, so it wasn't that cold but the wind was very strong. The covered bridge is the oldest wooden bridge in the world, dating from about 1400's. We've got an early start in the morning for an 8 hour drive to Paris.... read more

Europe » Croatia May 13th 2007

When you're backpacking, the people you meet quickly become close friends. This is the way it was with the Canadians we met in Sarajevo - we just couldn't get enough of each other! From Mostar, we took a bus to Dubrovnik, a seaside town on the Dalmatian Coast of the Adriatic Sea. We were immediately greeted by a swarm of women with pictures of their homes, wanting us to stay with them! Fortunately we made Brandon our haggling "captain" and he found us a nice place to stay for our three nights in Dubrovnik. Croatia is more expensive than what we were used to, but the time we spent there was well worth the money! Dubrovnik is a lively beach town, and did we ever take advantage of the beaches! After spending a couple of weeks ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin May 13th 2007

This is it -- no more entries after this one! We got up early to start the long drive back to Dublin from Belfast. Unfortunately Kevin has more faith in his map-reading skills tham might be warranted -- we ended up off course (which is pretty hard, since the Belfast-to-Dublin highway is pretty much a straight lin). After some cursing, we finally got back on track and made it down to our first stop, the site of Newgrange. Newgrange is home to an ancient Irish burial mound. Centuries ago, years before the Pyramids were built, the local inhabitants built this place out of stone and covered it with grass, as if it was just part of the hillside. It's really impressive... a lot bigger than you might imagine. But the cool thing about it is that ... read more

Saturday was an open day for our local wine region, which incidentally produces very drinkable, very reasonably priced wine that the Swiss seem to snub. To get there we took a bus, changed to an extremely crowded train, got out a stop early, and then walked up a hill to discover we could see our apartment from the vineyards. We spent the morning wandering through a few cellars, and then walked home. That evening we took a local white and a heap of strawberries and cheese to a Eurovision house party. We watched beautiful people from miscellaneous European countries try to sing and dance, and then we watched people from Ukraine dressed in silver space outfits jump around like aluminium Wiggles. For me there was no question. The Ukranians were a standout. They were better ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Rouen May 13th 2007

My final game in France was a good one. I pitched, we won 3-0 against Dunkerque. Josh, the other American, hit a home run and so did Eric Coutu, a lead-off bomb right down the left field line. I had 15 strikeouts in 7 innings the most I have ever thrown in a single game. And even though we made some errors I was happy to finish the game giving up no runs. After, we had a small barbecue at Jean-Luc’s house. We drank Heinekens and played a game of Cranium, a board game kinda like Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Taboo all in one (it was the France version, and all centered around French culture. I was totally lost). I regret that while in France I did not take more pictures. In fact, in most situations looking ... read more

Church in Warwick was another great experience for me—I really enjoyed the way the branch seems to just get straight down to business instead of asking surface level questions like some wards back in Utah. The talks in sacrament meeting sparked some really good ideas for one of my essays. I love it when things work like that! Again, our group doubled the size of Relief Society, though it was nice to see more young people in the branch due to the presence of a university. Since we’d already moved out of our hotel rooms, we spent the day in the church, preparing lunch and practicing for our fireside. We’d been informed that morning that the mayor of Warwick along with some of the city council members would be attending, so we were anxious to get ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt May 13th 2007

We arrived in Frankfurt earlier than scheduled, around 9am rather than the original scheduled time of 9:30. So the answer to question #1 is yes. During dinner I watched the movie "Because I said so" with Mandy Moore. I thought it was cute. Our flight also had a bit of "eye candy" with a group of handsome soldiers. One young man was in our row and was a fun talker. Once they landed they had a 5 hour bus ride to their station. There was also a "High maintenance woman" in front of me. Nothing seemed to please her and she made a rude comment about how can all these Americans afford to go to Germany. Question #2's answer was approximately 30-45 minutes of a twilight sleep listening to the music of King Arthur on my ... read more
