We arrived in Frankfurt earlier than scheduled, around 9am rather than the original scheduled time of 9:30. So the answer to question #1 is yes. During dinner I watched the movie "Because I said so" with Mandy Moore. I thought it was cute. Our flight also had a bit of "eye candy" with a group of handsome soldiers. One young man was in our row and was a fun talker. Once they landed they had a 5 hour bus ride to their station. There was also a "High maintenance woman" in front of me. Nothing seemed to please her and she made a rude comment about how can all these Americans afford to go to Germany. Question #2's answer was approximately 30-45 minutes of a twilight sleep listening to the music of King Arthur on my ... read more

LLEIDA to SITGES 13th May 2007 (Sunday - Hazy 23º) With an eye on the rear mirror we cruise the next 200 kms towards Barcelona and are amazed at the thousands (yes thousands) of wind turbines that dot the landscape. They are everywhere. In paddocks and fields and along every ridge as far as the eye can see. I am impressed with this VERY serious attempt to use an alternative means of energy production but the visual pollution is a big drawback. Wind Farms account for over a quarter of Spain’s electricity generation. Once again we avoid the big city and head to a little place just south of Barca. It is called Sitges and is a resort town popular with English Tourists and as we soon find out…Gay Couples…of the male variety. We park near ... read more

I'm now starting to realise what its like to drink like a true Londoner.. What’s the clinical amount that deems you an alcoholic?? Is it drinking more than 6 times a week?? Coz I think I’m rooted... I never thought of myself as a big drinker, I well.. I don’t think I am really.. But my recent efforts are starting to refute that.. I'll start with a quick rundown of the last couple weeks.. As of yesterday, I have been on the UK for 1 month exactly.. Man I cant believe how quick my first month has actually gone.. Since my last post...mmm where did I leave you guys last time?? Oh, yeah, I’d just moved into East Acton.. Well, while Erin and Bec were away, I was left to my own devices.. Tara was ... read more

In two weeks, my family and I are to set out on our biggest home exchange adventure ever. No agreement forms have changed hands. We barely have an address of the place, not to mention a key. And yet, we are totally convinced of the success of this unusual home exchange. How is this possible? The picture that I gained from our home exchange partner through our correspondence is of someone trustworthy and reliable. Home exchange is all about trust! The object we are exchanging our home for is neither a house nor a boat. But what else could it be? Here is a hint: it is ancient and made out of stone. I'll keep you posted! ... read more

Today was the famous Stanislaw Moniuszko Vocal Competition. It was really interesting. There were vocalists from all over the place and they all were really good. Listening to them just inspired me to get better at singing. They were incredible! When Abby and I got tired of all the singing, we went walking around. We saw many different kinds of people. One of the people that Abby and I encountered is one that we’ll never forget. He was like the squire, in the Canterbury Tales. He was serenading us by kissing our hands and buying us bouquets of flowers and things of that nature. It was pretty funny. Abby and I just laughed. We thought it was cute, but somewhat ridiculous. We also encountered a man who reminded us of the plowman. We didn’t really get ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich May 13th 2007

Zürich, our last stop for this trip, and probably just as well since Leah and I were starting to run out of zing. Our hostel was located in the middle of what seemed to be the main café and restaurant area, and more cobble-stoned streets which seem to make everything just that much more authentic. We climbed the mass of stairs up to our room, and both decided to have a rest for 15 minutes….an hour later we ventured outside to see the beautiful and vibrant Zürich. The River Limmat dominates the whole city, cutting the centre in two. It seems the most things worth seeing are located just on either side of the River. We walked over the Rathaus Brücke and wandered through narrow cobble-stoned streets with tall buildings each side until we reached the ... read more

We headed into Oban to book our £75 island rover tickets, which would pretty much let us and our bikes on any Caledonian MacBrayne ferry for the next 15 days. The woman there told us that there was a problem with the Castlebay, Barra ferry (it was broken) and that they would book us on it anyway and send us a text to let us know if it was cancelled or not. So we headed to the cafe in Tesco where we overdosed on carbohydrates and both fell asleep in the car. Never got the text but got confirmation that the ferry would set sail for Castlebay at 5.30pm, about two and a half hours late. As it was a five hour sailing this would mean we would arrive in Castlebay at 10.30pm rather than 8pm ... read more

We arrived in London! hurrah! Having survived our seperate flights and making it to Heathrow airport in one piece, we lugged our luggage for some time trying to make our way out of the airport. The underground just happened to be in construction that day and we had to take a bus to another station to take our train from there to Earl's Court where our hostel was located. When we finally got to Earl's Court station, a funny thing happened right away. We were standing around for a while looking at a map, figuring out which way to go, and just as we crossed the entrance of the station on our way out, we heard a frantic beeping sound which made us both dart back in, with frightened expressions on our faces, thinking it was ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Bled May 13th 2007

Without cheating, write down everything you know about Slovenia. Information such as "it's an 8 letter word beginning with s will not be accepted. What you have written would probably fit on the back of a postage stamp. If you gaze at a world map, Slovenia is roughly the same size as that postage stamp. While she is small, Slovenia punches way above her weight in terms of attractions. Now, pretend you are an artist, and without anything to copy you would like to paint a landscape. A lake would be nice, surround that lake with hills and in the distance some mountains sprinkled with snow. How about a castle perched on one of those hills and a steeple in the midst of a lakeside village. This might be overkill, but let's throw in an island ... read more

La Tour Eiffel and the fastest TGV ever Giverny and Ave Maria must have pooped us out, because we got off to a terribly late start. Our Paris days have somewhat of a routine - Leroy and I get up and get ready, then walk from Maman’s on Boulevard Malesherbes, up Rue Legendre, and left at Rue de Levis. After the lavender-colored storefront, we punch in the door code, walk up one flight up the warped wooden stairs, and ring the doorbell. After some bonjours, we all leave the place for a new adventure. Today, we go to one of our two favorite bakeries on Rue de Levis for pastries and a Quiche Lorraine. Our plan is to go to the Eiffel Tower, where there will also be a showing of the TGV that recently broke ... read more
