We arrived in London! hurrah! Having survived our seperate flights and making it to Heathrow airport in one piece, we lugged our luggage for some time trying to make our way out of the airport. The underground just happened to be in construction that day and we had to take a bus to another station to take our train from there to Earl's Court where our hostel was located.

When we finally got to Earl's Court station, a funny thing happened right away. We were standing around for a while looking at a map, figuring out which way to go, and just as we crossed the entrance of the station on our way out, we heard a frantic beeping sound which made us both dart back in, with frightened expressions on our faces, thinking it was an alarm that went off when we stepped out. After some more hesitation, we finally stepped out again, and to our horror and embarrassment, discovered the beeping sound had come from a traffic light located directly in front of the station! We were so aware of how crazy and dumb we appeared to the people who were standing around at the station looking at

us. We already stood out with our luggage and just had to do something like that to make us stand out even further. We were so embarrassed and couldn't stop laughing at how silly we were. It just seemed like such a typical thing for us to do.

Anyway, our hostel-the Barmy Badger Backpackers - was well-situated along a typical London street with lots of family-run restaurants and cafés (although there was a starbucks and mac's there), and grocery stores (which we made good use of in our time there). We left our luggage there, as it was still too early to check in, and had breakfast at one of the cafés along the street. It was a drizzly, cold London day, and we told ourselves that it was ok and that after all, we were seeing London in all its typical gloom. Little did we know that kind of weather was to characterize most of our trip=P

After having breakfast at one of the cafes along the street, we checked into our hostel, took a shower, and set off for the afternoon. We wanted to make the most of our time there and didn't want to waste

Just like in Goldcoast, this room had our very own cosy corner used to dump our backpacks, books and paraphernalia. Of course, food took up another space of its own, on a higher shelf not seen in this picture.
the first day resting. We took the tube to High Street Kensington and spent the afternoon walking all around the area, going to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. We saw Kensington Palace, the Italian Fountains (which were pretty but stinky), the King Albert memorial which was huge, lots of other statues, the Royal Albert Hall, and walked around The Serpentine.

When we finally got back to our hostel in the evening, we were so exhausted we both fell asleep in our clothes, slept through both alarms we set and woke at close to midnight without having had dinner. After snacking on some chocolate (yay for the handy food packs we brought!), we finally went to bed at 1plus am.
