Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini » Fira June 14th 2007

Woke up just in the nick of time to leap up and get breakfast at the hotel buffet. It was well worth it though, the hotel put on a huge, impressive spread of food; scrambled eggs with ham, bacon, meats, cheeses, little hot dog things, breads, apple turnovers, mini pitas, chocolate filled croissants (Steve say’s they were extra yum!), fruits, super sweet fruit juices, cereals and yogurts. Whew, I’m sure I forgot something but that was basically it, the only downside was you had to eat in the dining area, if you took the food back to your room or deck there was a 3 Euro per person charge. We planned to go shopping in Fira and decided to go to the Hondos Center , so we parked at the entrance to Fira. We ended up ... read more

There was one more place I wanted to see while here. Like many veterans of the war, my father seldom spoke of his wartime experiences. One of the few times he did was to mention the destruction of the abbey atop Monte Cassino during the Battle of Monte Cassino. The Germans were reportedly using the abbey as an observation post and Allied command ordered it to be bombed. He spoke ruefully of the destruction of the beautiful abbey. I’m sure my father would be pleased to learn that the abbey has since been rebuilt to its former glory with its fantastic views. Unlike Pompeii, this place did move me…perhaps because of my personal connection or perhaps reflecting on the lives that were lost in this bloody chapter of the war. Unfortunately, my camera’s battery bit the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Sorrento June 14th 2007

We took a 4 hour train from Rome to Naples with a mother/daughter duo from Mexico sharing our car on the train. Then, once in Naples, we switched to a smaller train line that would take us from Naples to Sorrento on the opposite side of the bay. As it happened, this was the worst train ride I could ever imagine. It was a solid hour and a half long train ride that stopped over twenty times on the way to Sorrento. Also, the train was not airconditioned and it was badly overcrowded. So, I got to sit on my bag in the aisle of the train and smell the stink of Italian armpits sans deoderant while we slowly made our way to Sorrento. Finally, upon arrival in the Sorrento train station we began looking for ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona June 14th 2007

We arrived in Barcelona at approximately 6:30pm on Thursday the 14th of June. Barcelona was not a city that either of us had any expectation of. However we knew before touring there that people seem to either love it, or hate it! On first impression, nothing really stood out to us about Barcelona… although it was good to experience another major city! We were taken past the 1992 Olympic Stadium, up to the top of Mont Juic for photo opportunities, visited the Gaudi’s famous Sagrada Familia church which is still not finished being built and won’t be until 2040, were taken on a walk through gothic Barcelona and we then spent the rest of the afternoon shopping. Everything is manana, manana in Spain. We actually found this aspect to be quite frustrating! Australians are laid back, ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Annecy June 14th 2007

This is where we spent the first 2 days of our return to France, a wonderful small 2 star hotel with elevator and private bath and balcony. We began a long awaited return to France in Annecy, our favorite French destination. The resort of Annecy, which is the region's capital, makes the best base for touring the Haute-Savoie region. Once a Gallo-Roman town, the seat of the comtes de Genève, Annecy opens onto one of the best views of lakes and mountains in the French Alps. Historically, it enjoyed a brief flurry of importance in the early sixteenth century, when Geneva opted for the Reformation and the fugitive Catholic bishop decamped here with a train of ecclesiastics and a prosperous, cultivated elite. Today, it is a spectacularly beautiful town with a fast moving canals running through ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Moscow June 14th 2007

When you think of Moscow, what do you call to mind? Parades in Red Square? Grey skies and generals lined up to salute as rockets and other weapons file past on October 1st? Lines of people waiting to get in to see Lenin in his embalmed glory? Zillions of those little nested dolls for sale in shops on the street? Onion domed churches against the skyline? Well, some of these images formed in my mind too before we actually got to Moscow and saw it in its splendor but perhaps the most dominant image for me was that of St. Basil's Church with its oddly decorated onion domes against the blue skies. Our brother-in-law Glen visited Moscow years ago and sent us a picture of that church in the background with him in the foreground. Glen ... read more

Europe » Denmark » Region Hovedstaden » Copenhagen June 14th 2007

I forgot to say that while at the Medieval center (Tobias says Middleeevil, awwww) the pamphlet said that because fish swam and birds fly....bees were considered birds and ducks were considered fish!! Crazy!! And that while at tobias's gf's house, I've mostly been playing with the dogs because love and scratches are in the same language :) turns out I can drive the Civic, but I know it pains Tobias when I drive it, so instead of being in Denmark for a week.... just 2 or 3 days :( I'm really sad about that, but I can't force him to let me drive around in his car for a week. So that means we'll be back in Luxembourg sooner than we thought...but might save some money so we can spend two nights in Amsterdam!! :) Blargh. ... read more
