Vasa Museum Europe » Sweden » Stockholm » Stockholm By Whittall and WestJune 14th 2007Sal Whittall In his infinite wisdom, the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus commisioned a warship with many cannons. So many cannons, their combined weight sank the boat while leaving the harbour in 1628. 300 years later, the Swedes decided to dredge it up from the seabed and restoring it. Nothing if not determined. It really was interesting- the ship was beautiful, and it had the 15 skeletons found on board with some studies about their physiology, genetics and possessions which was surprisingly re... read more

Hey, Everyone -------------------------------------- That represents NO WORDS! There are no words to explain what we experienced today. Our bodies are exhaused and we are going to take an "extended" nap before hitting the streets of Venice again tomorrow. We met up with a 3rd American (Mom, your baby girl is fine) and laughed our way through Venice. The Team Photographer took over 1,000 pictures and friends--get ready. They will absolutely blow you away. The Team Mom may just have a heart attack. She is on glass overload. Tomorrow, the island of Murano where The Son & Mom Team will find that special piece to commemorate the trip of a lifetime. Be back tomorrow with pictures---if we live through the glass blowing factories! The Son & Mom Bonding Glass-Loving Italy Loving God Bless the USA Excursion Team ... read more

God obviously doesn't want me in Ireland. Back when I was in the UK 3 months ago, the Irish Sea was stormy, and the ferries weren't running on that day. Yesterday, the train to the port of Wales was delayed by an hour. An hour! I thought the trains in the United Kingdom were reliable, but I guess I gravely overestimated them. So, nice as they are - the train service offered us bus service to the port, which of course got our hopes up. 45 minutes later we got to the port, and the ferry had just left. So, Logan and I packed up all the dignity we could muster and took a train back to Colwyn Bay. The train service was, however, nice enough to offer us customer feedback forms in amends. Off ... read more

London Europe » United Kingdom » England » London By CourtneyinLondonJune 14th 2007 The first full day we were here had orientation and meetings on and off. After our meetings were over we decided to go to explore Buckingham Palace. We stopped at Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. We went all the way up to the palace gates but there were no guards since it was so late. Afterwards we walked around for hours trying to find a good place to eat at. We finally stopped at an Italian restaurant. It was pretty good. Our waiter for some reason had a really hard time understanding us and messed up a lot of the orders... read more

Nantes week one Europe » France By Sabrinas TravelsJune 14th 2007Sunday afternoon I took a 3 hour high speed train to Nantes, where I met my host family. My "mom", Annie, and my "sister" Yvanne welcomed me into their typical French home and greeted my with fresh picked cherry pie from their garden. We had a great dinner that evening, and slept well. In the morning, I woke up and went to school. After that I took the bus tour to a the castle of Brittany and then to the Cathedral. It was really great. I have also included some pictures of my home. Enjoy!!... read more

Yesterday Kathleen and I spent SO long at the grocery store trying to find bottled water! You'd think it would be a very straightforward mission, but it was not! All of the water is sparkling mineral water. ALL of it. Even the bottles that were labeled, "Natural Spring Water." (in Norwegian, ofcourse) had "HydroKarbonat HCO3" in them. We searched and searched, shaking every candidate to test for bubbles, but we only found one bottle we could put our trust in. So I made the purchase, for our final test. This particular choice was called, "Natural," no bubbles, no reported HCO3 in the ingredients, but when the seal was broken, the sound of fizzy bubbles shattered my hopes. No water! Now don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of sparkling water and normally, I would be happy ... read more

It's day 1 on my trip to London. It took me hours to figure out what I really wanted to see in London but I figured lets check out where the royal imperial family lived. The Buckingham Palace. The name of it sounds cool. haha. Well I'm on the plane to London Heathrow airport. It was cheaper than I would imagine. It only cost me $924.80; that's in American money. I think thats the only time I'll be thinking about America over there. But that means it cost me £679.11. Hey! cheaper than I thought. well I'm gonna go back to the flight. I'm a little sleepy. but i refuse to sleep. Because that's my plan for when i get to the hotel. ... read more

Matt and I were on our own in Bucharest again on Tuesday. We have gotten to be relatively comfortable exploring on our own--as long as our taxi driver speaks some English AND we have our map. Our taxi driver today was cool--his #1 CD was Soul: the Supremes, Barry White, etc. His favorite song, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor--the essence of the Romanian people. Our mission today was to tour the People's Palace, technically called the Palace of the Parliament. Words can't explain nor can pictures depict what we saw today. During the tour, we were stunned by the massiveness of everything; but never did we hear "but the people were starving." Our guide was a Romanian girl about 25 years old; her English was relatively good but she seemed to be guarded in ... read more

Since we last wrote, we have been through most of the Iberian Peninsula. After our stay in Nice, we drove for about three solid days straight across Basque Spain to Porto, Portugal. We stayed in Porto for two days, exploring the city and all things Portuguese. We loved Portugal outside of the city, the scenery, the mountains, rivers, plains, and beaches. However, we found Porto to be slightly disappointing. Very filled with a "fallen glory" type of feeling, it was slightly dreary, to say the least. We did however, (not surprisingly) very much enjoy the port wine cave cellars in Porto, along with their tastings! We went to two cellars for tours and tastings, both Croft and Fererra. They were very interesting tours, of which we have great pictures, and a perfect way to spend a ... read more

Hi all, Just a quick update to let you know we are alive and well. Have now been to Cinque Terre for two days and did the walk yesterday. Place is absolutely crawling with Aussies and Kiwis - I hope someone turned the light out when the last one left home. The walk normally takes 5 plus hours, but with Lachie, we had it out of the way in 3.5 hours, including the stops. Great walk and more on it next blog. Pisa was a leaning tower and that was it. Take care Paul ... read more
