Now that I'm done summarizing the past, I would like to write a little bit about what the future holds. I think that the reason I was inspired to summarize 15 trips in one day (I've been typing for about 9 hours straight now) is because I have so much to look forward to. At the end of this month, I will travel to Uzbekistan. The preview of that trip will follow this post. In October 2007, Raluca and I will spent two or three weeks in Romania, possibly via Rome if Raluca's brother is still working there. For three months in early to mid-2008, I will take Phase I of the round-the-world trip. This wil certainly feature Tibet, Nepal, and India. The rest of the trip is not yet confirmed. For three months in early ... read more

This was a shot taken on Sunday morning outside our upstairs bedroom window - fantastic view of the garden and pool.We had a lot of sightseeing to do and Sunday we got started by going to L'Isle sur la Sorgue. The river Sorgue surrounds the city and it has several canals running through it's center. And check out the video of this cool water wheel we ran across by clicking the video link to the left. More information can be found at: http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/vaucluse/islesorg/islesorg.htm It was market day and we did our part - Zdena bought some sandals and cheese. We all met up about an hour later and headed to a great restaurant Terry had picked out and ate outside along one of the canals. Besides having a great meal, we had an experience I won't ... read more

I heard about Dubrovnik for the first time back in 1995 when I was traveling through Hungary. Some people I was traveling with were lamenting that this city, the Jewel of the Adriatic, had been severely bombed and damaged during the recent civil war. One of them wanted to go see it anyway, saying that she thought it would still be one of the most beautiful cities of the world, even amidst the rubble. At that time the civil war was still in full swing in many parts of the former Yugoslavia and heading south of Budapest seemed like lunacy, so I declined the invitation to join her. Now, twelve years later, I have finally seen Dubrovnik, and despite much anticipation, my first walk in the city still took my breath away. My joints were ... read more

We have been on the road for over 7 months now. We have met a lot of amazing people and experienced many great adventures. However, we also have missed some big events back home. Unfortunatelly some not very happy ones, as both of us have lost a grandmother. Others very happy ones! Andy's cousin got married, CONGRATULATIONS to Sally-Ann and Paul. As this was the first wedding amongst the second generation of the family it was a big event for the Thompson's that we would have loved to be part of. Other lucky ones tied the knot including Emily and Paul and Jennifer and Simon, CONGRATULATIONS to you too! Before we left for our trip, my best friend Carmen got engaged in July 2006. Being friends for years we always wanted to experience each others weddings ... read more

Todays target: Zugspitze! Yesterday we tried to figure out which one of the mountains was Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany. Today we decided to be sure to see it and after an enormous breakfast (again!) we made plans to drive to Eibsee, where it is said to be the best view of Zugspitze. Eibsee is a mountain lake about 9 km southwest from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The lake is over 3 km long, about 560 meters wide and in average 12 meters deep. At deepest it is 35,4 meters! The water is clear and has a beautiful light blue color. There are a few small islands in the lake, that look like the coral islands in the Caribbean Sea! I think it is the limestone that dyes the clear water white around the islands. With the ... read more

I woke up just before the alarm went off and decided to get up and finish packing the last minute stuff and have some breakfast. Steve and I went up to breakfast while Alice finished getting ready. I’m really going to miss the breakfasts at the Lilium! By the time we ate and went back to the room to make a final check it was pretty much time to drag the luggage up 2 flights of stairs (Steve!) to the pool area and go check out. We got to the Santorini airport about an hour and 15 minutes before boarding. Security seemed more than a little relaxed (to say the least!) than in the States or even Athens . We boarded a bus from the gate that took us to the 737 out on the tarmac, ... read more

Despite feeling a bit rough (mostly Shaun thanks to the Sangria) this morning after our night out, we all piled in the car for the long drive to Lisbon. The 18 Euro toll for the motorway was also a bit off a shock! We enjoyed some lunch and local custard tarts in the city centre before checking out the sights along the river including a fort in the river and a large monument sculpted with famous historical figures looking out to sea. We then negotiated the winding streets to make our way up to the Castelo de Sao Jorge (St John) for the great views but unfortunately the misting rain had other ideas. By then we were hungry so headed back to town for a great meal at a local Middle Eastern restaurant. Bernie and I ... read more

Europe » Monaco » Monte Carlo June 17th 2007

An evening excursion down the road from Nice to a little place called Monaco. This country is famous for its Formula One race, dodgy tax rules and the Monte Carlo casino. The city itself though is absolutely spectacular at night, and the amount of money in this tiny place is astounding! To own one of the yachts in that harbour… we’ll keep dreaming! The casino itself isn’t actually that big on the inside, quite old fashioned compared to the brash cheapness of Star City. But the stakes are not small, and some people bet very big! We lost 50 euros quick smart on roulette before earning most of it back on the old school pull-down poker machine which was quite fun! Outside of the casino was packed with luxury cars - Ferraris, Rolls Royce, Bentley, BMW, ... read more

Every year a fun bike race is held between London and Brighton, and before you ask the answer is no - we were strictly spectating! However, Jess's boyfriend Shaun and Shaun's dad were entered in the race so Jess took us on a trip to the seaside to meet them at the finish line. We left London by train at around 9.30am and got to Brighton at about 11. It was a beautiful day and the boys weren't expected to get in until about midday (they left at 7.30) so we had a wander around the town, making our way to the Pier which dominates the beach. The Pier at Brighton is much more exciting than the Pier at New Brighton in Christchurch. Instead of a long walk to nowhere it has pubs, cafes, a gaming ... read more

Europe » Austria » Styria June 17th 2007

Take the train to Deutschlandsberg in the Southwestern part of Styria on Sunday. There is the opening of the regional wine festival taking place in the Castle (on top of a steep hill). The event is quite fun - the castle exhibits are open, free wine and food samples from the region, a lederhosen band, beautiful sunshine - and magnificient views of the Sulmtal (valley) which is described as the Tuscany of Styria. After the opening of the festival - the speeches go on about Styria´s two trademark food products - Schilcher (a rose wine) and Kernoel (pumpkin seed oil) - the latter is present in great quantity on all salads in the region and for sale at many farms in the region (there is obviously an oversupply) - we continue on our bicycles (without ... read more
