Hi all another entry just before we go off to Ireland tomorrow. We went to Windsor and saw the castle which is the Queen's residence when it takes her fancy, it was so lovely looking around where she lives for some of the year. We then looked at Runny mead where the Magna Carta was signed so historic. We then returned the car and got ready for going to Paris the next morning. Chris took us to his club whilst Liz was away on a school camp for dinner. The club is right beside the Thames a really lovely location. We were up early the next morning at 3.45am to catch the EuroStar to Paris. Fabulous way to travel and it was so fast, took us just over 2 hours to get from the centre of ... read more

We will visit Scotland June 11 to 25, 2013. Here are some details of our trip, which include minutia about planning; I probably spent more time preparing than the total trip time! We’ll stay in an apartment in central Glasgow to reduce costs and increase comfort (we can eat some meals at home, wash and dry clothes, and have more space than in a hotel room). I began planning the trip last fall; apartments often get booked far in advance, especially if they are inexpensive. I found a 2-bedroom apartment near Central train station for 680 British pounds for two weeks, or $1088, and reserved it in October. I sent a deposit of 100 pounds via Paypal and will pay the remainder in cash when we arrive. I was able to get foreign currency without a ... read more

Getting close now! Bags are finally packed; I've got far too much stuff jammed into them! You can bet that I won't need half of it, but it's a bit difficult to know what to take with me. The range of temperatures we will encounter over the eight weeks range from around 32F in June at the top of the mountains to probably at least 90F by the time we hit the Mid Ohio racecourse in July! The wind chill needs to be factored in when deciding what needs to be worn on the cold rides. My riding suit has got full removable padded inserts, which add a lot of bulk to the suit when trying to pack jacket and trousers into a bag. Plus helmet, two pairs of gloves (summer weight and full waterproof type ... read more

This blog will attempt to cover the trip that my best friend and co-conspirator Doug, who lives in Muskegon Michigan, and I are embarking on around the USA. Not having done anything in the way of blogging before and being brand new to Travelblog, I am still finding my way around here so bear with me. This should have been started many weeks ago when we first began the planning of our adventure but lack of time, lack of knowledge etc. means that it starts almost at the day I get on the plane to the States. Just a quick bit of background on the two of us. I live in Scotland, a 65 year old taxi driver. My best friend Doug is retired (to an extent!) and we run a part time web-based parts business ... read more

Day 8&9 continued The morning started out with a journey along the banks of Loch Lamond, first by boat. The skipper told us stories about Rob Roy, Scotland's Robin Hood. He pointed out the cave where Rob Roy went when he lost his lands. After the cruise the bus continued along the lake where we saw the site of the infamous MacDonald, Campbell 1692 massacre. This happened in Glencoe, Glen of the Weeping on February 13th. Later we saw Ben Nevis, England's highest point. We even saw the top, normally the clouds cover it but we were lucky. Apparently the bus driver has been doing this route for 17 years and he has seen the top less than 6 times. My pictures cannot begin to capture the beauty of this area. We also visited the Commando ... read more

As omens go, my attendance at a Scotland International match does not bode well for the Tartan Army’s prospects of success. Admittedly, they have never had the privilege of my “support” at a Hampden game. My previous run of Scotland home games dates back to the Ibrox days of 1992 / 1993 season, when Hampden was being redeveloped and the SFA mandarins reached agreement to use the Govan as their springboard to World Cup 1994 in the USA. It would be interesting to see what response they would get if they try a repeat of such an arrangement, given the recent fall from grace of the blue half of the Old Firm. The common theme of my Ibrox visits was Scotland 0. The memory has obviously faded though, as a goalless draw with Italy had gone ... read more

Karla was up bright and breezy ready for the day, Shane took more persuasion but after a quick shower he was ready too. We went off to discover the shopping centres and we enjoyed walking in and out of the shops. After a snack we headed to the train, we took our seats and got ready to enjoy the scenic trip down south to Kendal in the Lake District. The train was incredibly smooth and fast roaring through the countryside at around 100mph. We loved seeing the hills, sheep and stone walls as we moved. Two hours later we arrived in Kendal and were greeted by Karla’s Gran and Stuart who had travelled 6 hours north the day before. We went and dropped the bags off at the hotel then drove down the road to Guys ... read more

After giving hugs to Caroline and Heather at Halifax airport, we checked in and headed on our journey towards the UK. We had a long night flight from Halifax to Iceland where we had two hours stop over and just enough time for breakfast, then back on a plane to Glasgow where we were welcomed by clouds and rain. Karla’s uncle Alex picked us up at the airport and once Shane organized which side of the car to get in we were off up the motorway to his house where we had a Scottish brunch made by auntie Cilla. It was delicious!!! Karla was happy to have some long lost foods and Shane tried new foods such as black pudding. We then headed into the city centre to put our bags in the hotel before exploring ... read more
